We’ve got big plans: deinblick magazine has been improving ever since we launched our debut issue in Aug. 2010. And thus our network of contributors, readers and supporters is getting bigger and ever more international. From this issue on we’d like to underline our international approach by publishing deinblick as a multi-lingual magazine. This means that all articles will not only appear in English but in the author’s national language as well. A real challenge but big fun for us and our contributors, too. For example we discovered that the letter “a” is the one mostly appearing in Indonesian language. We found every fifth letter of a word being an “a”. 20 percent, that’s massive. Does that mean a language like this is pretty easy or rather hard to learn? Perhaps you’ll find out and tell us about it. However it may be, we hope you will love the various contributions from all over the planet and the mood our New Generation issue is capturing.

Besides Amsterdam and London also Hamburg came up with the idea of

using former piers or ports as wells as water channels that are running

through the city as exclusive housing space; such as the Eilbek Channel,

a branch of the Outer Alster. For decades this channel had a rather steep

bankside and was nearly overgrown with brushwood. Nowadays there

are a total of ten houseboats fixed to mooring posts along the channel.

Another houseboat spot is the Victoriakai bank. We, this is Amelie, Jörg,

Nathalie, Tommy and Martin are architects living in Hamburg, Germany,

sharing one and the same obsession; cityside houseboats.

Our houseboat has been an adventure

from the very beginning. Wind force scale

displayed five the day we shipped our

houseboat up the river Elbe. Absolutely

everything has been new and different

from what we knew so far. And to be

honest, we had no idea what we were get-

ting into the day we decided to plan and

build our own swimming home. It’s been

so exciting times! Today, one year after

completion, we know what it’s all about

and living on a houseboat became a more

familiar feeling. It’s definitely an extraor-

dinary way of living and still kind of ad-

venturous each and every day. When we

wake up in the morning and look out

the window, we find ourselves in an oasis

of blue and green. So close to nature

although living right in the middle of the

city – it’s just a ten minutes ride with the

bike to get down town.

We often feel like being anywhere else

but on this planet of ours. The most

remarkable fact about it all is that we

only had to move a hundred meters but

found ourselves in a totally new world.

W ir haben viel vor: deinblick wächst kontinuierlich, sowohl was die Anzahl der Beiträge als auch die weltweite Verteilung unserer

leser anbelangt. Das gibt es uns die Freiheit neue, tolle Ideen in die Tat umzusetzen. Die erste davon realisieren wir bereits mit dieser Ausgabe. deinblick wird mehrsprachig. Und das nehmen wir wörtlich. Jeder Artikel erscheint neben Englisch auch in der landessprache der jeweiligen Au-toren. Das unterstreicht den internationalen Ansatz unseres Magazin-konzepts und lässt deinblick noch spannender und wertvoller werden.In dieser Ausgabe finden sich Artikel in Deutsch, Portugiesisch, Slowakisch, Schwedisch, Philippinisch, chinesisch (Mandarin), Hebräisch, Französisch und Indonesisch (Bahasa). Das war nicht nur eine außergewöhnliche Her-ausforderung für uns und alle Beteiligten. Es brachte auch sehr kuriose Erkenntnisse zu Tage. So fiel uns zum Beispiel bei dem indonesischen Text der Buchstabe „a“ besonders auf. Genauere recherchen führten zu dem Ergebnis, dass mit zwanzig Prozent das „a“ tatsächlich der am häufigsten verwendete Buchstabe im Indonesischen ist. Fraglich ist, ob diese Tatsache es erleichtert eine Sprache zu erlernen oder gerade nicht. Vielleicht findet ihr es heraus. Wir hoffen die New Generation Ausgabe und die Stimmung die sie einfängt wird euch gefallen. C ostume Playing or more popularly known as Cosplaying or Cosplay is a gathering

of people who usually dress up as Anime and Manga characters. I first encountered Cosplay-ing when I went to a local comic convention in a shopping mall. There haven’t been many Cos-players, maybe some 15, I guess. They were walking around the convention hall with pride, showing visitors their colorful costumes and out-fits and posing for everyone carrying a camera. I doubted that Filipinos would like the idea of Cosplaying, where girls wear mini-skirts ala Sailormoon and guys walk around as girls. But fast forward to 2011 it has become a hit to everyone. Friends dress up as characters from a particular Anime. Even whole families

visit Cosplay events. The cosplayers’ outfits have become more elaborate and the details and designs are very intricate. Recently some can be found costumed as K-Pop stars and Hol-lywood Movie characters like Jack Sparrow and Transformers! I love shooting Cosplayers very much. At every event you can see new charac-ters, a new set of participants, new poses, but always the same nice smiles!

Hindi karamihan ang sumali noon, mga nasa labing-limang Cosplayer lang yata sila. Naglilibot sila sa loob ng convention hall at ipinagmamalaki sa mga bisita ang mga makukulay nilang suot, at nagpapakuha ng litrato. Duda ako sa simula kung tatanggapin ng mga Filipino ang Cosplaying, kung saan ang mga ba-bae ay naka mini-skirt katulad ni Sailor moon

at ang mga lalake at nakabihis pambabae. Pero, ngayon ay patok na patok na ito sa la-hat. Dinadala ng mga magulang ang mga anak nila sa mga ganitong pagtitipon bilang family bonding, ang mga magbabarkada ay nagko-costume nang katulad ng mga character na galing sa iisang Anime lang, at ang mga outfit ng mga cosplayer ngayon ay mas detalyado at mas pinaghandaan. Sa mga huling napuntahan ko, hindi na lang mga character mula sa Anime or Manga ang ginagaya. May mga nagpupunta na din bilang mga K-Pop stars at maging mga tauhan mula sa pelikulang Hollywood tulad ni Jack Sparrow at Transformers!Nakahiligan ko na magshoot ng Cosplayers, dahil na rin siguro lagi silang nasa karakter ng tauhang ginagaya nila at lagi silang handang magpalitrato. Sa bawat napupuntahan kong Cosplay event may mga nadadagdag na ba-gong mga character, bagong grupo at barkada na sumasali, bagong poses kapag nagpa-palitrato, pero nandun parin sa kanilang lahat ang masasayang ngiti na nakita ko sa mga nagdaang pagtitipon.

Backpacking is not a new phenomenon

and interrailing has been around for a

while. Hostel accommodation is nowadays

available even in small towns. None of

this is new. The people, however, who

prefer this way of travelling, are of

a new generation. It is how we travel,

where we travel and why we travel that

has changed. All over Europe it is not

young adults and students anymore who

are backpacking, but also financially

independent, full-time working adults.

They do not invest in the beach holi-

day with short excursions inland of

old anymore. Short all-inclusive group

holidays with fleeting stops at the

top sights are not in fashion anymore

– even if the travelers’ main focus is

on culture, country and people: inde-

pendence, flexibility and individual-

ity are even more noble motives for

travelling.

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 29TH 2010. BUCAREST

5:37 am. Night train arrival at Bu-

charest main station. Have slept rel-

atively well. The whole compartment

for myself, night train more or less

empty. Had handed passport and ticket

over to conductor, therefore almost

slept through journey. No checks. Am

drowsily standing on the platform.

Pitch-dark and extremely cold. Strange

people, a lot of gypsies. Walk into

a bunch of young teenagers enjoying fast food during lunchtime. Conspicuously, they are com-pletely ignoring the advertisements as well as the breaking news flash on the Reuters screen. To me this picture represents a generation who can hardly be reached any more, neither by ad-vertising nor shocking news. The reason for this is

that all day long, ads are showered upon us. Any place, any time. Oodles of information reach us daily on all channels. A literally waste of energy!

Für mich steht dies als Sinnbild einer Generation, die durch Wer-bung nur noch sehr schwer zu erreichen ist und auch schockierenden Nachrichten gengenüber abgestumpft sind. Der Grund: Rund um die Uhr prasseln die Informationen auf uns ein. An jedem Ort, zu jeder Zeit. Auf allen Kanälen. Im wahrsten Sinne eine Energieverschwendung!

Y ou thought new energy techniques will solve current problems: mineral oil is

running short and CO2 excess leads to global warming. For years attempts have been made to get nuclear fusion running, but it turned out to be so much more difficult to control than nuclear fission; it’s a good idea in theory, but no-body knows if we will ever bring it to heel. An-other thing that is being worked on seems rath-er confusing to me: people try to gain methane from ocean beds, sediments and permafrost soils. Under high pressure and low tempera-ture, methane is encased in ice. This clathrate is called methane hydrate but still looks like ice. The US research programme on meth-ane hydrate will cost 50 million dollars over next ten years, and the Japanese programme, requiring three million dollars per year, is de-termined to run for 13 years. Financially, it is worth every effort. There are approximately twice as much carbon atoms in the world’s deposits of methane hydrate than there are in all deposits of mineral oil, petroleum gas and charcoal put together. In other words, twice as many carbon atoms which man may burn and which will then float through our atmosphere as CO2. It’s just … isn’t there too much of that already? CO2 produced by man makes for 60 percent of global warming effects. Didn’t we learn a thing?And the funny part is that if we go on cook-ing our planet, the methane hydrate will be-come unstable anyway and methane gas will hence be uncaged. First, it will give the oceanic organisms a hard time by displacing oxygen in the water, then the removal of solid meth-ane hydrate will lead to land slips that can cause tsunamis, and finally, when the methane reaches the atmosphere, it will be pushing the greenhouse effect as it is 23 times as active as

CO2. By the way: one square meter of methane hydrate is releasing 164 square meters of gas. To be fair: Some of the researchers working on methane hydrate also try to gain methane by replacing it by CO2. What would be kind of environmentally sound, if we do not consider the methane released into the atmosphere by leakage. But you can be sure that they will choose the cheapest method, not the most reasonable one. How to stop them? Save en-ergy and reduce your CO2 footprint by enjoying climatically neutral print magazines like the one in your hand.
