FOREWORD

This is the second edition of the enumeration of degrees conferredin course by The University of Michigan. These two editions are thesole publications devoted to this purpose. The many studies, historiesand reviews published concerning the University and its students, havenot included any comprehensive information relative to the degrees conferred or their characteristics.

Criticism and corrections brought to our attention have beenincorporated in this second publication. Additional information andstudy have also refined data presented earlier. Several summaries havebeen expanded or added to complement other tabular presentation.

The interpretation of the records and data was treated in a consistent manner. A degree in course, includes the degree awarded afterthe completion of its requirements and the degree awarded upon examination. Any degree awarded nunc pro tunc appears in the year actuallyawarded and not the date stated on the degree. Prior to July 1, 1915the calendar year was used for the reporting period. After that date,the reporting period conforms to the fiscal year, JUly 1 to June 30.

Data for recent years in this report can be supplemented by materials included in the annual report for this Office, submitted to andpublished by Health, Education, and Welfare, and materials prepared andlocated in the Statistical Service of this Office. Generally this information concerns the degrees conferred in unique fields and recipients.

Considerable encouragement and suggestions have been provided byinterested people to update and improve the original publication.Acknowledgment must be made to Miss Vivian Day who drew upon her experience and knowledge to edit this information and to clarify questionable details.
