Deforestation
The effects of deforestation
“what now remains compared with what then existed is like the skeleton of a sick man, all the fat and soft earth having wasted away, and only the bare framework of the land being left”
Critias 111B
On the landscape of Attica (central Greece), Plato commented:
Roman ProblemOver harvested the resource for ...• public bath• Houses, ships, other structures• Making bricks, processing ore
Deforestation in Cyprus
Copper ores in Cyprus heavily exploited in Roman times, but mines functioned for about a millenium. Estimated that 5-6 M tons of charcoal (from coppice) used to fuel smelting activities. Heavy SO2 pollution may also have killed trees.
How is the United States
solving the problem?
• The U.S. is recycling now and promote recycling by money rewards.
• Selectively cut forest make it so there is still trees left and the forest can grow back.
Solving the Problem
• Weapons we are making are not made of wood or partially made of wood.
• We now can make fire out of chemicals or gas not just wood to save some wood.
Solving the Problem• Our baths are not wood burning so we use
less wood by using gas.
