Homer calls Circe a goddess, and describes her home on Aeaea as a stone house. Round the house prowled lions and wolves, the drugged victims of Circe’s sorcery. The members of Odysseus’ advance party are all turned into swine, except Eurylochus, who had suspected treachery. Odysseus himself, setting out to rescue his men, was intercepted by Hermes who taught him how to counter Circe’s magic. He spent a year in Circe’s company, and when he felt he had to leave, she gave him instructions for his homeward journey, directing him to go to the realm of Hades to consult the spirits of the dead (principally the blind prophet Teiresias.
