INNOVATION
Defining Tomorrow‘s Cooking Space
Cooking is a huge trend at the moment. And its current popularity is one of the reasons why the kitchen has become a central gathering area in any living space. Yet, the demands on the design of the modern cooking area are changing: in urban areas, available space is often limited with high importance placed on digital features.
“Cooking FUSICS®” was the motto for the SCHOTT CERAN® Design Awards 2017 . The concept combines a number of challenges that the kitchen of tomorrow – fully utilizing CERAN® cooking surfaces – must meet:
When it comes to cooking – whether it is gas, induction or eletric – CERAN® glass-ceramic cooking surfaces are highly versatile. But what about the other functions? An integrated scale, displays for recipes and instructions or Smart Home connectivity?

When it comes to cooking – whether it is gas, induction or eletric – CERAN® glass-ceramic cooking surfaces are highly versatile. But what about the other functions? An integrated scale, displays for recipes and instructions or Smart Home connectivity?
CERAN® glass-ceramic is a sustainable and durable material. What other materials could enhance the value of CERAN®? What other sustainable compounds, processes or cycles are conceivable?
Lighting can help create the mood; even when standing at a CERAN® cooking surface! What are the plausible light scenarios? Ambient lighting? Radiant operating elements? Or perhaps a combination of both?
The cooking area transforms into the Smart Kitchen: What are the essential interactive features? Will a basic connectivity be ample, or must other smart, new features be added as well? What might those be?
Cooking is a passion which becomes humanized at the stove. But what does tomorrow‘s social experience at a CERAN® cooktop look like? What roles do other cultures play? How does diversity add to the cooking space?

Re-imagining the cooking experience
The Vision: The FUSICS® Table Prototype
To ensure that “Cooking FUSICS®” was not just an interesting slogan but a tangible concept that could be realized, SCHOTT came up with some guidelines to serve as a starting point and commissioned Frankfurt designer Robert Cristinetti to bring it to life.
It was already clear with the initial design of the FUSICS® Table: this concept should inspire both designers and architects. An event in the creative epicenter from East London served as the setting for the presentation of the prototype.

“In the best case, design contributes to the usability of technology in future kitchen concepts – only when design and technology merge, it makes everyday life better.”
