Defining Heroic Qualities

Purpose

To define words that identify heroic traits To practice multiple strategies of definition

Qualities of a Hero

Using a bubble map, brainstorm as many adjectives as you can that describe a heroic person.

In small groups, compare and share your maps. Add words to your list that you do not already have.

Using a thesaurus or iPod, expand your lists by finding synonyms or other appropriate words.

Definition essay – writing that explains, or defines, what a topic means

Your assessment for this unit will require you to write an essay about your concept of heroism.

Strong definition essays employ multiple strategies of definition

Strategies of Definition

Paragraphs using the function strategy demonstrate how the concept functions or operates in the real world.

Paragraphs using the example strategy use examples to help the reader understand your definition.

Paragraphs using the negation strategy explain what something is by showing what it is not. Using negation helps to contrast your definition with other’s definitions.
