ATTRACTIONSWinnipeg celebrates over 130 days of festivals each year. Famous ones include the Winnipeg Comedy Festival, the International Jazz Festival, Festival du Voyageur and Folklorama – the world’s longest-running multicultural festival.

Located in the heart of Winnipeg, the Forks Market has been a meeting place for over 6,000 years and it is the future home of the Canadian Museum for Human Rights, the first federal museum to be located outside of the nation’s capital.

Winnipeg is one of the most affordable cities in Canada and is full of opportunities. As the 2010 Culture Capital of Canada, Winnipeg is a city where people can experience a wide array of world-class arts and culture on every corner.

If you don’t meet the University of Manitoba’s admission requirements, one of these programs can help you reach your goals. All programs listed are held on campus and coincide with the university’s academic schedule.

ENgLISH LANgUAgE CENTRE – ELCIf you meet the academic admissions criteria but do not meet the English language proficiency requirements, the ELC can help. The University of Manitoba can accept you on the condition that you successfully complete Level 5 of the Intensive Academic English Program (IAEP) at the English Language Centre. Depending on your initial placement level, IAEP can take as little as one semester to complete. The program prepares you for university studies by providing you with the language skills necessary to succeed at a university such as listening to lectures, learning new vocabulary and writing essays. The ELC offers three intakes every year and strives to ensure you gain the confidence you need to succeed.

INTERNATIONAL COLLEgE OF MANITOBA – ICMIf you fall short of the University of Manitoba’s academic requirements, are missing the English language proficiency requirement, or need extra academic support, ICM may be an option for you. ENTRANCE REqUIREMENTS The Faculty of Graduate Studies has a minimum academic standard for admission. Departments may have higher requirements and additional criteria.

The minimum eligibility requirements to our Master’s programs are graduates with a four-year Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent from a recognized college or university, and a Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.0 (on a scale of 4.5) in the last two full years (or last 60 credit hours) of undergraduate study.

Students with a general (three-year) Bachelor’s Degree may be admitted to a qualifying year of study called “Pre-Master’s”. The standard minimum eligibility requirements still apply. Not all programs offer this option.

Admission to Ph.D. programs are normally based on completion of a U of M Master’s degree.

1. Tuition costs are based on a selection of Arts & Science courses taken in University 1. Tuition will vary by program.

2. Students who are claiming an exemption based on coverage by MHSC, CIDA or other provincial or international scholarship plans must present proof of coverage to have the medical insurance charge removed. Students wishing to obtain “family” coverage may do so on application to the Registrar’s Office (room 400 University Centre).

SCHOLARSHIpS Each year, close to $475,000 is allocated to international students in the form of scholarships and bursaries. International high school students are automatically eligible for entrance scholarships if you apply before May 1 for the fall term and have the required senior year average. Students enrolled in an 80% course load during the fall and winter terms, who continue to do well in their studies (min 3.5 GPA) are also assessed for future scholarships (valued between $500-$750).

*Students completing the full IB diploma may be eligible for our IB Entrance Scholarships of up to $2,800 CAD.

**Students completing Canadian curriculum may instead be eligible for domestic scholarships if they apply before the February deadline.

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE – BURSARIES AND LOANSIf you require additional financial assistance, you may qualify for a bursary after completing one full year of studies, even if you already have a scholarship. Applications are due October 1st each year. In addition, our emergency loans can provide short-term assistance to students who experience unexpected and immediate financial difficulties.

B: Determine if you should apply to a direct entry or advanced entry program option

Direct Entry Program Options are available to students applying directly from high school or those who have completed less than 24 credit hours of study at an accredited post-secondary institution.

Advanced Entry Program Options are for students who have completed a minimum of 24 credit hours at an accredited post-secondary institution. Some Advanced Entry Program Options require more than 24 credit hours of study and each program has its own specific set of prerequisites.

Note: Some programs will have both direct entry and advanced entry options, please be sure to review all admission requirements carefully.

D: English language proficiency requirements

English is the language of instruction and communication at the University of Manitoba. Accordingly, an applicant whose primary language is not English, or whose previous education has been conducted in another language, must demonstrate a command of English sufficient to meet the demands of classroom instruction, written assignments and participation in tutorials and discussions. English language proficiency can be demonstrated in a variety of manners:
