DCCA President’s Message

I have to lead off with the announcement of our annual meeting which is being held at

the Deep Creek Elks Club on December 3rd at 7:00pm. All DCCA members are invited and election of officers will be held along with the presentation of our annual distinguished

service award. Coffee and cookies will be served. We hope for a good turnout.

The former President of the section 23 POA, Ron Woods, (he is now the Vice President)

spoke to us at our monthly board meeting. He relayed the fact that the one penny sales tax paid for our sidewalks, and it would be very important to keep the penny sales tax to

keep these improvements coming. It is due to be on the November 2014 ballot, and you must make up your own mind whether or not to approve it. I personally think it is a good

deal as long as Deep Creek shares in the wealth.

I received an e-mail from Claudia DeBruyn, who is the new President of the Section 20

POA. We have updated our website and the newsletter with her contact information. I was invited to their next board meeting and I will be happy to attend.

The Deep Creek Civic Association also has a new Vice President. Maura Yousko volun-teered to accept the position, and was approved by the board. Thank you Maura, and

welcome aboard.

We are beginning to gear up for our annual scholarship award. Chris Burr, our new Sec-retary and Scholarship Chairperson will be providing information to those interested.

We are still struggling to get new members to join the neighborhood watch. The coordi-nator, Pete McGarry wrote a nice article last month explaining what is involved, and it is

pretty simple. Remember, they are supported by the CCSO who attend the meetings, and new members get training. We would appreciate more of our members signing up

IT’S WORTH THE TRIP!

On October 19th., the garden club enjoyed a day at Bok Tower, a National Historic Landmark in Lake Wales, Florida. It was a special day, it was their “Boktoberfest”. The tower and the sur-rounding gardens were beautiful. Rolling hills and tall green trees surround the tower area which is called Iron Mountain and is 298 feet above sea level. Looking down into the valley, you would think to yourself “am I still in Flor-ida?”. Originally, Bok Tower was called Mountain Lake Sanctuary and Singing Tower due to the 60 bell carillon within the tower. Made mostly of pink marble and granite with carved figures at the top and corners, it was an impressive work of art to say the least.

We walked through the gardens checking out every plant and tree until we came to the Pine-wood Estate. It is a lovely home built by Austin Buck, who was Vice President of Bethlehem Steel in the early 1930’s. Sadly the beautiful Mediter-ranean style home was only used 2 months out of the year.

We had a lovely tour of the home and were told that at Christmas time it is decorated elegantly giving the home and gardens a festive holiday feeling.

We enjoyed lunch at the Biergarten and listened to live German bands and then we were off to check out the 40+ plant vendors.

It was a memorable trip for us. We can just imagine how beautiful it must be in mid-Spring. Hopefully, we’ll find out.

Be sure to check Bok Tower and Pinewood Estate on Google for more information and direc-tions. It really is worth the trip.

Check out the pictures on page 11 and see them in beautiful color on our website www.deepcreekcivic.org.

Be well and have a wonderful holiday season!!!!

We’re Here to Help The DCCA Garden Club is offering gardening assistance to all of our Deep Creek neighbors. Experienced DCCA Garden Club volunteers will visit your home and try to answer any questions you may have about your own personal landscape. Suggestions as to the types of ap-propriate plantings, where to plant and how to plant will be made available. This visit will be by appointment only and should take about an hour. There will not be a charge for this service, as we are only supplying ideas. Residents are free to make donations (by check) to the Civic Association for the garden club. All donated funds will be used for the upkeep of the Deep Creek entrances and future projects to beautify our community. Please remember that these will be merely recommendations and suggestions for your personal landscape. If you are interested in using this service, please call Ilona New-

man at 941-625-2163 or email:

[email protected]. We look forward to meeting you!

The Neighborhood Watch Com-mittee meets on the first Tuesday of the month in Section 23 building at 4:00 P.M. If you take a walk every day, your eyes could pre-vent a burglary or you could keep tabs on someone who is ill or in distress. An hour or two as you take your daily walk could make a huge difference. Come in for refreshments and see what we’re all about.

Change a Life over Lunch

Take Stock in Children pairs good students who have the odds stacked against them with men-tors who provide the support, encouragement, and guidance they need to succeed in school. As a mentor, you’ll spend just one hour a week with your student – and the difference you make will last a lifetime. Most of our mentors choose to meet with their students during lunchtime. You can choose al-most any point in the day that’s convenient for you and your mentee, so long as it’s during school hours and on school property. In the process, you’ll be part of a movement that has served over 18,000 students throughout 770 Florida schools. When you choose to become a Take Stock mentor, you’ll be partnering with a non-profit or-ganization that’s behind you all the way. Since our inception in 1995, we’ve enabled thousands of students to overcome their obstacles and fulfill their dreams of a college education by grant-ing more than $125 million in scholarships. Beginning in the 8th grade, our selected students sign a pledge of commitment to keep their grades up, stay away from drugs and crime, attend school regularly, meet with their mentor, and focus on achieving high school graduation and becoming college ready. If they meet these requirements, they earn a college scholarship. This is what makes Take Stock in Children the only college attainment focused-mentoring program of its kind in the nation. Becoming a Take Stock mentor is simple. You’ll fill out an application, come by for an inter-view, and undergo some basic background screening. After that, we’ll provide the training you need to help you succeed. When you’re ready to mentor, we’ll carefully match you with a student who will benefit most from your specific experience, perspective, talents, and personality. Perhaps this is why most of our mentors maintain their relationships with their students year after year, all the way to high school graduation – and sometimes into and after college. Throughout it all, you’ll have the confidence of knowing the entire organization is here to support you, just as you’re there to support your student. Please call Mary Fred Clemmons at 941 255-7500 x294 or visit us at CharlotteSchoolFounda-tion.org. BECOME A MENTOR TODAY!

Section 20 Property Owners Association

By Claudia DeBruyn - President

Welcome home snowbirds! We're glad to see our neighborhood filling up with old friends and

new ones.

Section 20 held elections for the Board in October. The new positions are: Claudia DeBruyn,

President; Luis Urrutia, Vice President; Dan Collins, Treasurer; Ben Pappa, Secretary; and Ed

Brizzolara, John Bailey, and John Mansur, Directors.

We received a letter from a neighbor asking about how elections happen in Deep Creek.

(Bylaws 3.B) We ask property owners to submit their resumes in June. The Board then ap-

points a committee of five (5) Section 20 property owners to nominate candidates from the re-

sumes sent in by you, our interested neighbors. This takes place no less than 30 days before

our October Annual Meeting per the bylaws.

We send out the Annual Meeting notice to all property owners about the upcoming meeting and

ask them to vote. Voting can be done by mail or at the Annual Meeting. The Nominating Com-

mittee can only nominate enough members to fill the vacant seats, again per the bylaws. Un-

fortunately, the bylaws then only allow additional nominations from the floor. Adoption of

amendments to change the bylaws require approval by either 60% of the property owners and

60% of the Board OR 70% of the property owners. With over 3,800 property owners and many

living out of the state or even the country, this is a very difficult task. (Bylaws 8B(1) & 8B(2))

I was out of state and missed the request for resumes in 2012. I attended the October Annual

Meeting and nominated myself from the floor. This was an unusual case as there were not

enough nominees to fill the open seats. Normally, there are enough nominees on the ballot

making election by nomination from the floor a difficult endeavor.

We will post the call for your resumes in June on our website, www.deepcreekfl.com, and have

a sign at the office. Make yourself a note if you think you may be interested. We would like to

see more residents get involved. We meet the 2nd Thursday of the month at 8:00am in the of-

fice at Deep Creek Commons on Sandhill Boulevard. Anyone who owns property in Section 20

can attend. You must call ahead or write us only if you would like to be added to our agenda.

Our office phone number is (941) 627-6562.

We receive several "anonymous" letters over the course of the year. It is difficult to answer if

we don't know who you are. Sometimes, like the one I just responded to above, there is an

easy answer! Sometimes the solution takes a little digging, but we will get back with you.

Have a great 2014 and enjoy living in Deep Creek!

Featured Recipe form the Deep Creek Cookbook

Ilona Neuman’s Tequila Christmas Cake

1 cup sugar Lemon juice 1 tsp baking powder 4 large eggs 1 cup water Nuts, your choice 1 tsp salt 1 bottle tequila 1 cup brown sugar 2 cups dried fruit

Sample tequila to check quality. Take a large bowl; check tequila again to be sure it is of the

highest quality. Repeat. Turn on the electric mixer. Beat 1 cup of butter in a large fluffy bowl.

Add 1 teaspoon of sugar, beat again. At this point it is best to make sure the tequila is still

okay. Try another cup just in case. Turn off the mixer thingy. Break 2 eggs and add to the

bowl and throw in the cup of dried fruit. Pick the fruit up off the flour. Mix on the turner. If the

fried fruit gets stuck in the beaterers, just pry loose with a drewscriver. Sample the tequila to

test for tonsisticity. Next, sift 2 cups of salt or something. Check the tequila. Now sift the

lemon juice and strain your nuts. Add 1 table. Add a spoon of sugar or somefink. Whatever

you can find. Grease the oven. Turn the cake tin 360 degrees and try not to fall over. Don’t

forget to beat off the turner. Finally, throw the bowl through the window. Finish the tequila

and wipe the counter with the cat. Cherry Christmas.

Holiday Sparkle Contest

Once again the Deep Creek Garden Club will be perusing all of Deep Creek looking for Christmas lighting displays. Our club will be awarding gift certifi-cates to a 1st and 2nd place winner for their lighting display. It's not so much about the giving of awards, but the coming together of a community. The awards the Garden Club gives is our way of saying we are proud of our residents who make the effort to decorate their property for the

holiday season. Christmas is the time of the year for giving and the folks who decorate are giv-ing something to all of us. Deep Creek is looking better each day and with all our residents help it will be a special place to live. So let's get those decorations up so we sparkle our way through the holiday season. If you can't put up decorations, maybe just putting on your front entry lights will add more sparkle to the neighbor-hood. Just imagine if every home had their front entry lights turned on what the community would look like at night. Not to mention this would certainly deter the robbery element. Let's all be winners and participate!

Notes From The Charlotte County Gardening Symposium

By Marlene Oehlrich Deep Creek Garden Club member

For those of you that may have missed the Gardening Symposium sponsored by the Charlotte County Extension Office at Harborview on October 26th and taught by Master Gardeners, I thought I would share with you some of

the things I learned that day.

The first session I attended was on Thrifty Gardeners Propagation given by Mike Stevens. The Deep Creek Garden Club had visited Mike’s greenhouse and extensive collection of crape myrtle trees in his home’s backyard so I al-

ready knew of Mike’s passion to propagate new plants from existing ones. He showed us some plants that make new plants by themselves and are easily separated in your garden like sedum, liriope, bromeliads or elephant ears.

Plants that go dormant in the winter, like schefflera (arboricola), work better with propagation by cutting. Notice

where the stem goes from green to brown and cut just below the node in that brown section. Mike uses a rooting gel (purchased on line) or you can use a rooting powder that can be purchased locally. Cut off all leaves on the

stem and only leave minimum leaves up top because you want all the plant’s energy going to root growth. These stems can then be planted in a propagation soil made by mixing garden soil with perlite and peat moss (don’t use

pine bark in this mixture). Leave the stem in this mixture till the plants have established roots and are ready to

transplant in your yard. A pothos (philodendron) plant is an example of propagation by layering. This plant creates roots on its branches and you can just lay the branch in soil to generate new plants. If any of you have noticed

those very large leaf pothos growing up the side of oak or palm trees these are the same plants with the smaller leaves just transplanted outside in Florida!! If you want to plant seeds to start your new plants use domed contain-

ers (like the ones cupcakes come in) and heating pads. Using a spray bottle to mist your new plants will also con-tribute to their successful growth. Propagating soil should be moist, not soaking.

The session I found most useful was on Amaryllis by Bill Warren. I have wondered why my amaryllis bulbs have

never produced flowers in my yard. It turns out that my bulbs were planted too deep. In a garden the soil line

should be at the widest part of the bulb and in a pot only the roots should be planted below ground. Since the roots will draw the bulbs into the ground, amaryllis bulbs should be planted with a tile or oyster shell buried in the

ground under it. You should also shade the ground around an amaryllis with oak leaves or pine needles, but not heavy commercial wood chip mulch. Coffee grinds and charcoal are good soil additives for these plants. To en-

courage extended blooming on your amaryllis when your bulb is finishing its bloomset but before the stalk has

started to soften, cut straight across through the entire neck removing all leaves and stalk, you should see a new stalk in about 40 days.

The presentation on palms by Donna Worthley included slides of palms that may look abnormal, but actually are

quite normal like the spreading of the bark at the base of palms, crumpled leaves on our areca palms, or trunk ero-sion on our older palms. She also informed us that some of our “palms” like our ponytail palms, our king and queen

sago and our cardboard palms are not actually palms at all. Don’t worry about your black tips on our Bismarck Palms, they probably went through a cold spell when in the bud of that tree. Fronds on palms dying naturally turn

brown in 2-3 days, but fronds dying by disease take a long time to die. Did you know that swamp cabbage or

hearts of palm come from our native sable or cabbage palm?

The last session I attended was on lawns presented by Ralph Mitchell (you’ve probably read his weekly column in

the Charlotte Sun). Did you know you should look for “scarified” grass seed because it germinates faster? New

lawns need frequent shorter time periods of watering (2-3 times a day) and established lawns need longer time pe-riods but less frequent. It’s best to water in the early morning hours because it’s not good to have wet grass during

the night. Also remember in Florida from June 1st till September 30th. no nitrogen or phosphorus fertilizer can be applied. Putting down too much nitrogen will create brown patches in your lawn. Mole crickets and cinch bugs are

not a problem in Bahia grass, Empire Zoysia grass doesn’t get brown, Bermuda grass is better in Northern Florida or

Georgia and St Augustine grass is best for shade and salt tolerance. All grasses have both advantages and disad-vantages.

I hope you learned something useful in this article and I highly recommend any of the many offerings from the co-

operative extension office. If I piqued your interest in this article you may get more information from the Charlotte

County Extension Office at http://charlotte.ifas.ufl.edu

2014 SCHOLARSHIP ANNOUNCEMENT

Since 1997 DCCA has contributed $21,000 in scholarships to twenty-six students in our Deep Creek com-

munity. There has been more than one year where multiple scholarships have been awarded. The Civic

Association feels the scholarship is important to help an outstanding student begin or continue their edu-

cation.

IMPORTANT CHANGES FOR 2014!

1. Applicants attending colleges out of the state of Florida are now eligible for the award.

2. If a student has a guardian that is a member of DCCA, they are now eligible to apply. Parent, guard-

ian, grandparent, or adult student, must be a member of the Civic Association (not the POA), either by liv-

ing in Deep Creek, owning in Deep Creek or advertising in the DCCA newsletter.

3. Applications will be in the December, January, and February newsletter. They will be sent to local area

schools for easy access. The 2014 application may also be accessed at www.deepcreekcivic.org. These

updated applications have the DCCA logo on them and contain all pertinent information. Do not use pre-

vious year’s applications as deadline dates have changed.

4. Each year we have run into conflicts with students retaking the ACT test. This is normally the second

Saturday in April. Therefore, 2014 interview date will be April 5th to avoid this conflict.. We expect all

applicants to be present for the interview. We have granted phone interviews for students currently at-

tending college and unable to come home for the weekend. However, it is to the student’s advantage to

interview in person. We will not adjust the interview date/time.

5. All DCCA annual dues must be current by March 1st

. (Check the expiration date above your name on

the newsletter label. A March 1st

dues deadline will avoid what seems to be a problem each year called

“the check is in the mail”. While we definitely accept applications from brand new members, the same

March 1st

deadline applies for dues. Although the last application acceptance date will be March 15th

, fam-

ily dues must be in by March 1st

.

Students applying for the scholarship need to complete the application and submit a paragraph to one

page statement why they should be awarded the scholarship. Students are then asked to participate in

an interview conducted by an evaluation committee. All criteria on the application form must be met.

Please include a copy of your acceptance letter from an accredited educational institution or copy of your

ID if currently enrolled. Accepted accredited educational institutions in the United States include:

Four year colleges

Two year degree programs

Full time job preparatory program at an accredited trade or technical school.

Note: All must be on a full time basis.

(Since schools outside of Florida are being accepted, please plan on including documentation of your

school’s accreditation with your application if you will be attending a small or independent school.

The scholarship will be awarded and given directly to the recipient, not the school. While grades are dis-

cussed during the interview, it is not the sole determination. The award will be based on the following

criteria:

1. Need

2. Community Involvement

3. Realistic goals

A panel of three community professionals will read the applications and conduct personal interviews. All

interviews will be conducted on Saturday morning, April 5, 2014. Section 23 allows DCCA to use their

conference room for the interviews. Students will be notified of their interview time once all applications

are received. In order to be considered all applications must be received by March 15, 2014, provided

DCCA records indicate family dues for 2014 were paid by March 1st

. The award will be presented at the

June DCCA board meeting.

You may use the application found toward the end of this newsletter or visit our website:

www.deepcreekcivic.org to print a copy. You may also call Mrs. Burr at 941-764-1866 if you have a ques-

tion.
