Prior Planning Prevents Poor PerformanceState Deputy Bob Penas

[email protected] (320) 327-2122

Those five “P’s” can produce premium results for you and your council. We all know that you cannot plan for every contingency and that the unexpected often occurs, but the more thoroughly we preplan, the better we can handle the little things that pop up and avoid some problems that would result in poor performance. One of your best tools for preplanning is looking at the records from prior events. This is why documentation is so crucial. In simplest terms, if I have a record of how many people usually attend and what supplies were used, I have a solid starting place for planning the next event. In addition, if I have a description of how we set things up, when we did what, who helped out, and what changes and additions were suggested, I am even farther ahead of the game. This is where those service program entry forms come in handy. They are not just so you can win awards. They are a convenient way to document your activities so future generations can carry on the work and have the infor-mation they need to work smarter, not harder.Remember, membership is another council activity. Prior planning of these events and documentation of how they go is just as crucial as doing so for your fish fry. Don’t just put up a table, toss out a few brochures, and stand behind waiting to see who comes to you. Get proactive, get creative, and plan when you do things, how you will do them, and how you will follow up. Record the steps you take, review how things went, and write down recommendations of changes and new things to try next time. Remember, every council event can also be a membership event. When you plan for something your council has never attempted before, draw on the experiences of other councils, your district deputy, your regional director, and your state team. Someone out there has probably attempted something similar before, and you can learn from their successes and their mistakes. Don’t hesitate to ask for assistance or to look at the activities of other councils and say, “Hey, we could do that!” You should be on the look-out for new project ideas and needs to fill for your parish and community all the time. Don’t forget to ask your parish priest for ideas, too.You may remember, I have suggested in the past that you schedule the first degree and not waiting until you have candidates. I just had a phone call from one of our district deputies. He said, “Hey Bob, I can hardly believe it, but that really worked!” He scheduled the degree and the had five candidates come and join! I hope you all try this — what do you have to lose? If you don’t end up having any candidates, use it as a practice session. As we continue on in this new fraternal year, let us boldly plan for peak performance as we continue to do God’s work here on earth and Open the Doors to Christ! Vivat Jesus!

Who Is My Neighbor?State Chaplain Fr. Jeff Horejsi [email protected]

The kofc.org website has an article under recent news which begins, “In a move that will give many Christians and other religious minorities in Iraq hope for the future, the Knights of Columbus will raise and donate $2 million to save Karamdes, a predominantly Chris-tian town on the Nineveh Plain which was liberated from ISIS late last year. The Knights’ action will move hundreds of families from minority religious communities in Iraq – espe-cially Christians – back to the homes from which they were evicted by ISIS in summer, 2014.”Supreme Knight Carl Anderson, gave an impassioned speech regarding our need to act in order to prevent Christianity from being wiped out in the country of Iraq. And in an ad-dress during the States Dinner of the Supreme Convention, Cardinal DiNardo reminded us that Jesus’ parable of the Good Samarian calls us to act to help those in need. He strongly connected persecuted Christians in the Middle East with ‘our neighbor” from Jesus’ para-ble. Our Knights of Columbus councils have many worthy recipients of our charity. Some-times it is difficult to consider a new group or cause. Brothers, I encourage you to chal-lenge your council to consider a substantial gift to our brothers and sisters in Iraq who des-perately need out financial help now. Our goal of $2 million requires our contribution.Again, I quote the kofc.org website, “In the same report, Supreme Knight Anderson also announced that the K of C would partner with the U.S Conference of Catholic Bishops on a “Week of Awareness” for persecuted Christians beginning Nov. 26.” I’m sure more in-formation will be available online as we plan to implement these initiatives. Where Two or Three are GatheredAssociate State Chaplain Fr. Gabriel Walz

[email protected] beings are social creatures; we have an innate desire for communion with other persons. How often do we gather together with others, even in small groups, to go to a game, play cards, watch a movie, or to just be with other people? But how frequently do we consecrate our time together to the Lord? Imagine what it would be like to begin a backyard football game with prayer. What would happen if your family prayed that this movie you’re going to watch would lead you closer to the Lord? Would that perhaps even stop you from watching this particular movie? As Christians we claim to be heirs of a Kingdom for which we pledge our hearts, minds, souls, and strength—to love of God and our neighbor. In the Gospel reading for the twenty-third Sunday of Ordinary Time, Jesus said, “Where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.” Imagine what you might think or do if Jesus suddenly and tangibly appeared when you were en-gaged in the activities of your day. The innate desire for communion embedded within the human heart is ultimately satisfied in God alone. It is a constant reminder to us that we were not destined for this world. It can be a helpful cue to refocus our hearts on Him in all our actions throughout each day. You can ask yourself: “Is what I am doing right now leading me closer to my Lord?” The more you can answer “Yes” to this question, the more thoroughly conformed your heart will become to His. Vivat Jesus!

Please Sign TwiceState Secretary Marc Peters

[email protected] (651) 482-8771 The months of June, July, and August are very busy for your state secretary. I am making out per diem vouchers for the councils and staff in June, doing the per capita billing in Ju-ly, and recording the checks coming in during August. In the past year, I have found some councils not following established procedures is issuing checks, namely they do not have the signatures of both the treasurer and grand knight on their checks. Having both signatures is standard operation procedure to insure transparen-cy within the council. According to the laws and rules of the Order, the financial secretary receives all moneys and the treasurer disburses all council funds. For this reason, the FS draws a voucher and the grand knight signs it. The treasurer draws the check and requires the grand knight's signature, as well. In this way, the council members can be assured that the proper proto-cols are protecting the council funds (taken from the FS Handbook).Whether or not your bank requires a second signature is immaterial. To protect the integri-ty of your council books, we require two people signing checks. This past month, I have sent about 15 checks back to councils for the second signature. As a state officer, I am re-quired to uphold the Laws, Rules, and Procedures of the Order and would expect all coun-cil officer to do likewise.

If you have any questions please contact me. The best way is through email; state [email protected].

A Note from State Youth Activity Director Patrick FarrellyAttention Grand Knights and Council Youth Activity Directors:Most councils run programs which benefit youth, whether it is the Marathon for Nonpublic Education, the Soccer Challenge, the Basketball Free Throw Championship, a benefit for altar servers, or a program to serve the hungry in support of faith formation programs. In today’s climate, working with and serving youth demands training and awareness to prevent the unthinkable from happening to the children under our care. The sad fact is that preda-tors look for programs and opportunities to volunteer in where they can get access to chil-dren, so we must be vigilant in the execution of our programs. Our Order is doing everything we can to give our leaders and members tools and knowledge to prevent predators from using our programs as an access to children they can victimize. Children can be victimized by predators who groom their victims and their com-munities so they have the trusted access they need. Kids can also be victimized by oppor-tunistic predators who wait for children to be alone and vulnerable, perhaps in the rest room at one of our events. In both cases, red flags can alert us to a possible problem if we know what to watch for. The red flags are part of the Armatus training offered by Supreme. Leaders who require the Safe Environment training are notified by Supreme soon after their election or appointment is reported to Supreme via Form 185 and Form 365. Our Order’s safe environment program and the Armatus training that is delivered through it should be completed by every Grand Knight and every Youth Activity Director at the Council level as soon as possible after the email from Supreme is received by the leader.PLEASE complete your training and submit any requested authorization for a background check if you have received an email from Supreme. This training and background check must be refreshed every two years, so you may have received a notice from Supreme even if you took the training in 2015. It is also required that you complete whatever diocesan youth safety program (e.g. VIRTUS) is in force in your diocese to be able to work with youth in your parish. One training does not supersede the other. Both must be completed by the GK and youth program leader. Some parishes may decide that more council Knights must have the diocesan training. Thank you for your ministry to our young people through youth programs. Our children are counting on you to have the knowledge to keep them safe. Your brothers are counting on you to have the knowledge to know how to prevent the unthinkable and to know what to do if the unthinkable happens. Please treat this with the seriousness and attention it deserves and complete your training as soon as possible.

Page 6: Dedication September 8 - Nativity of the Blessed Virgin ... · learn from their successes and their mistakes. Don ™t hesitate to ask for assistance or to look at the activities

The Supreme Council is al-ways looking for outstand-ing council programs that can serve as examples of the good that a committed group of Catholic men can accom-plish. An "after action" re-port with good action photos is always appreciated. What's even better, though, is if we know about the pro-gram before it happens. With this knowledge, Su-preme can assist in several ways, such as:Þ arranging to capture pro-

fessional photos or vid-eo of the program that might be used in Colum-bia or Knightline, on kofc.org, or in future video productions.

Þ helping to publicize the program among the gen-eral public and/or local media.

Þ offering insight into how to best leverage the pro-gram as a membership recruitment opportunity.

In addition to programs, we'd also like to know about outstanding Knights. The Supreme Communications Team is planning a series of short videos featuring out-standing Knights of Colum-bus, to showcase the Order as an organization that Cath-olic men would want to be a part of. Think of members who might have a uniquely inspiring story to tell, and Supreme might be able to provide the venue through which they can tell it.Supreme may not be able to spotlight every program or every member you identify for us, but working together, I know we can highlight the good things happening every day throughout the Order, and help the Order to grow. Vivat Jesus!

My 2 centsState Treasurer Dave Whatmuff

[email protected] (763) 772-2997

I had the pleasure and privilege of being a delegate to the Supreme Convention held on August 1-3 in St Louis Missouri, and I mention here a few of the outstanding features. The theme for this 135th convention was “Convinced of God’s Love and Power.” During his opening address, Supreme Knight Carl Anderson was able to once again announce record numbers for the past year … over $177 million in donations and over 75 million hours of volunteer service, growth in membership to over 1.94 million, and the continued strength of the insurance which now stands at more than $105 billion. The Supreme Knight announced two new initiatives to assist Christians persecuted in the Middle East … a day of prayer on November 26th, and a plan to raise $2 million to rebuild the town of Karamdes on the Nineveh Plain, recently recovered from ISIS. Councils will be asked to donate to this cause, and provide funds to allow exiled families to move back to their homes. State Chaplain Fr. Jeff talks about this initiative in his article on page 3.He also announced a new push to fund additional Ultrasound machines, with the goal of reaching 1000 machines and an estimated 1,000,000 babies saved. In an effort to attract more young men to the 4th degree, which currently only represents about 15% of our membership, a new uniform was announced to replace the existing 4th degree regalia. It was stressed that the Supreme Council does not wish this to become a divisive issue, but hopes that mem-bers will see this as a necessary step to ensure the future of the 4th degree. More information about this can be found in District Master’s article on page . Vivat Jesus!

Pro-Life Events Fall Schedule 2017Culture of Life Activities Director John Bowlin

[email protected](651) 483-1877

This Fall is a special time, honoring human dignity and respect for life in our parish commu-nities. We have a tremendous opportunity to make a prayerful impact on abortionists and their godless secular ideology. We need you to join us in solidarity and give our prolife fami-ly a strong presence at our upcoming prayer vigils across Minnesota. Prayer is the only way to bring peace to a culture overrun with anger, hatred, animosity, and division. As brothers of prayer and men of action, we need your help in standing up for the unborn. Through our prayers we seek the conversion, through God’s love and mercy, of all those who support abortion. Please pray that those who are engulfed by a net of indifference, will break loose from that net, and join us in response to our Lord and our Lady of Fatima’s call to prayer. Thank you for being prolife and defending God’s Gift of Life.

Review, Set, Implement!State Membership Director Bou Gazley

[email protected] (507) 259-7851With the start of the new fraternal year just behind us and our councils getting busier as summer ends, it is important to sit down and think about what goals we have for the fra-ternal year. Supreme provides each council with the goal of Star Council. Star Council is a great achievement indicating strong membership recruitment, insurance recruitment, and that the council has a variety of programs. While this is the ultimate goal, this does not mean your council cannot have other goals. For example, if it has been a year or two since your council recruited a new member, the goal Supreme provides may seem to drastic and unobtainable. Then maybe your council goal should be to recruit one new member this year. The important part to remember is that goals are not static. Once you hit your goal, set a new one! Always be working towards a goal. On the other hand, maybe your council has achieved Star Council the last few years. Maybe your goals will be set higher than the number provided by Supreme. Your goal may be double or triple star (two or three times the membership goal provided from Su-preme). No matter what your goals will be, it is important to set them now and then start imple-menting plans to meet those goals. Setting goals is one thing, but if you do not work to-wards meeting them, they become useless. As we prepare for the October Church Drives next month, I want to point out a great new pamphlet I saw when I was at the Supreme Convention in August. The Going to the Periphery pamphlet includes nicely colored tabs talking about a handful of Supreme lead programs that our councils do to reach the pe-riphery. The order number is 10521. I recommend ordering some of these now so you can have them to hand out in October. This is a great way to show what the Knights of Columbus does and help your council meet their goals, whatever they are!Don’t be afraid to Open the Doors to Christ as you ask Catholic men to join our Order and share in the good works that we do. Vivat Jesus!

HOLY FAMILY ICON

As of August 2017, MN has 7 Holy Family Icons, and all of them have been scheduled through June 2018. Each Holy Family Icon has a case of Eng-lish Prayer Books and English Prayer Cards and a case of Spanish Prayer Books and Spanish Prayer Cards. Due to the Holy Family Icon covering all 63 districts by June 30, 2018, it is critical that each District Deputy re-ceive and pass on the Holy Family Icon and materials according to the schedule for the 7 Holy Family Icons.

2019 Supreme Convention

Co-Chair Philip M. Harter, PSDWe hope many of you had the opportunity the first week of Au-gust to watch the 2017 Supreme Convention held in St Louis, MO. No matter how many times you have seen the Opening Mass at these conventions, the sight of hundreds of priests, 90 bishops, and 12 cardinals in procession makes you stand a little straight-er. It makes you proud to be part of an organization that so many members of our hierarchy take time out of their busy schedules to attend. Why so many bishops and cardi-nals attend is answered in the report of the Supreme Knight. Any CEO in the world would give his right arm to be able to deliver a report with so much positive substance. The report makes you proud that you belong to a great order that is doing great good for our local church, communities, and the world. Our brothers in Missouri did a great job of hosting the almost 2,000 members and guests in attendance. In 2019, from August 3-8, we in Minnesota will have the honor and responsibility to host the 137th edition of this great con-vention. If you would like to be part of this great event, it is not too early for you to complete the volunteer form at https://mnknights.org/the-2019-

supreme-convention-in-minnesota/

There you will find the many ways you can become involved, such as a driver that will have direct contact with the hierarchy or as a greeter to welcome guest from all over the world. We still have many opportunities for leadership positions.

The Circle of LifeState Program Director Joe George

(651) 253-3112I want to ask each of you to think back to when you were in school studying for your chosen career. You were most likely away from home, studying hard so you could get the most out of the education you were paying for or, as is the case for many, borrowing money for. Chances are, your parents were like mine and could not afford to front the cost of your entire education. So, you had to get a part time job to make just enough money to get by. Work-ing meant you didn’t have as much time to study, which affected your grades. Wouldn’t it have been great to have an organization to back you and help support you financially as well as with prayers? The Knights of Columbus are known as the Right arm of the Church and we do both. One of the most important and most often overlooked program is RSVP. Last year, less than 15% of our seminarians were supported by this program. This entire organization ex-ists because of a single priest, Fr. McGivney. That’s where my title this month, Circle of Life, comes in. It started with a priest. Why not help the men training to be priests. It’s a win-win for everyone. The first win is that the men training for the priesthood will have some help with the financial burden of their schooling. Then, when they become priests, they will remember that the Knights of Columbus helped them, and they will want to have councils be more involved with their parishes, which will in turn help many people through-out your community. The other win is that Supreme will refund $100 for every $500 donat-ed (up to $400). That’s more money that you can use to help others. Keep in mind all those in need when thinking about programs and your council will flourish.

Remember- “See a need, Fill a need.” Vivat Jesus!

WOW! I just received all the SP-7 (Columbian Award) for 2016-2017 from our Worthy State Deputy. Can I say this again? WOW! There have been a lot of great activities. Again, my goal is to create a library of community programs that can be used as a reference or new program for other councils. I have found however, this will be no simple deed. So much for setting high expectations for myself! LOLAs a reminder in the Community Programs area of the Columbian Award, activities that it should serve are feeding the hungry, decency, health services, ecology, poverty, helping the aged, and most anything else that touches a community. One more reminder: Sponsoring a “HABITAT FOR HUMANITY” or “GLOBAL WHEEL CHAIR MISSION” program, and meeting minimum participation requirements, will fulfill all four activity requirements in the community category.I again invite any and all councils to share their programs with details as to how it was planned, organized, implemented, and what the outcomes were with me so that I can share it with all our other councils. God Bless! Randy Balausky

Master’s MemoDistrict Master Craig Larson, PSD

[email protected] (218) 289-3872Brother Knights,Last week the Supreme Knight announced a new look for the 4th Degree. The Vice Su-preme Masters from around the Order wore the new uniform at the Supreme Convention Masses. They were led into mass by an honor guard with the usual chapeaus, capes, and tuxedos. It created lots of conversation in St. Louis and all across the fruited plain. I’m sure that many of you discussed this with your brother knights as you heard the news. If this had happened 20 years ago, we would have read about it in the Columbia magazine rather than on the internet and Facebook. I have received many emails, text messages, and phone calls regarding the change, and as you can imagine, most of them were not positive. I respectfully voiced my concerns to the Supreme Master when I saw him in St. Louis, knowing that this would be a tough sell to most of the sir knights in Minnesota, including me. I encourage you to respectfully voice your concerns with charity in your heart. In the time that I have been a Catholic, there have been changes to the liturgy and a few other things that created lots of controversy as they were implemented. Long before I joined the Church, I understand that changing from Latin to English and the other changes of Vatican II caused quite a stir. In the time that I have been a Knight, there have been changes to our 1st, 2nd and 3rd degree ceremonies that took some time to catch on. Years before I joined, there were other major changes that I’m sure caused quite a stir too. I would encourage anyone angry or upset about the change in uniform to attend a 1st degree ceremony and carefully listen to the words that each of us heard and the pledge we took when we joined this great organization. Remember, every 4th degree knight is also a 1st

degree member who took the same pledge as the new knights today. We all know that change is hard, whether it’s at work, in church, in our community, or in the state and federal government. We entrust leaders to discern and lay out a path for us. With the gift of free will, we can chose to follow the path or go our own way. I hope and pray that we all can find our way to follow the path laid out by our Supreme Officers.

If it weren’t for change, we wouldn’t have to worry about this. We would all be Jews or Gentiles! Vivat Jesus!

More information just released by Supreme about the new uniform is on the next page.

Knights of Columbus Insurance: Making a Difference for Life!

Survivorship Universal Life (SUL)….What the heck is that?SUL is a second to die life insurance product available from the Knights of Columbus. A single SUL policy covers two people, and the death benefit is paid upon the death of the surviving second person, which is normally when your estate would be subject to tax. This policy can also be used to create an estate for your children or leave a legacy on your behalf say to the church or any charity you desire. For your loved ones, your passing will be a time of grieving and loss. In addition, estate taxes can diminish the value of everything that you’ve both worked so hard to accumulate over your lifetime. It’s true that under current tax law, a married couple usually won’t have to pay these costs until the death of the surviving husband or wife. However, when the sec-ond death occurs, the cost can be enormous. So if you want to protect your estate for your heirs or leave a legacy to your family or char-ity, talk to your agent to see if a SUL is appropriate for your situation*. *Knights of Columbus and their agents do not render tax or legal advice. Please consult with your tax and legal advisors regarding your personal circumstances.

(763) 218-3816Let’s face it, brothers. There is not a Knight of Columbus alive who joined the Order so he could come to a meeting every month and discuss the size of the sausages to serve at the next pancake breakfast. They join to help needy kids, help paint the rectory, collect and deliver food for the hungry, encourage young people to live their faith, and to grow in their own faith. They join to put Catholic social teaching into practice with other men like them. They join to DO stuff!

Let your programs, your activities, and your ACTIONS

MN Councils Share Your Local Newsworthy Events

The Supreme Council is always looking for news from local councils. Local councils provide much of the good work of the Order. Use the fill in the blank form at: http://www.kofc.org/un/en/knightsinaction/kia_news.html

Also send your pictures and articles to [email protected] us your articles and pictures, so your council can be featured in the

Knightly News, and you can inspire others with your projects and activities. Submit articles to your local paper. It is often said that, “The Knights of Columbus is one of the best kept secrets out there.” If men don’t know the good that we do, why would they want to join and support us? We don’t need to brag, but we need to keep the community informed through articles in our local papers and church bulletins and by being visible as a positive presence in our communities as Knights of Columbus.

Wright County Fair ProjectJoint Effort Between 2 Districts & 5 Councils

The goal of this project was promoting the Knights of Columbus and the Catholic faith, and all agreed it was successful. At the fair, over 30 knights volunteered time at the booth for over 120 hours at the fair, plus planning, setup, and teardown time. They greeted many people, including many inactive Knights, and assisted those who wanted more information on the Knights or the local Catholic Church-es. There are many times during the fair that there is not a lot of people going through the building, so having 2 brother knights scheduled to keep each other company, or spell each other for breaks, worked well. The booth was also manned by Father Joe Fink of Watertown and Former State Chaplain Father Ken O’Hotto of Waverly. Father Joe even let us know that next year, if it was feasi-ble, he would be willing to hold mass at the fairgrounds. In the booth they had council banners hanging in the back, a county map marked with council and Catholic church locations, a Building the Domestic Church Ki-osk, a book with information from each council, various pamphlets, Tootsie Rolls with mission cards and rosaries with instructions. Some people wanted to donate money for the Tootsie Rolls, but since we weren’t fundraising we asked them to make a donation to their church. Field Agent Jim Mikelson created a PowerPoint presentation consisting of scans of Form 10395 (a recruitment brochure) with various video clips between them. Many were impressed by it, and it is available if anyone wants it. The booth cost about $400 total and 5 councils had agreed to help finance it ,so it was $80 per council. We all agreed that the booth was a success and we should do it again next year. Frank Patterson has agreed to chair this project again next year.
