Dedicated to your inner child
– that’s how so many stories begin.I think they start them that way because we love looking back to how things used to be, to a long-ago time when life was magical:
Trees were dragons, making up silly songs was fun, and bathing had nothing to do with getting clean.
But becoming a grown-up didn’t happen overnight – it was a slow thing that crept up on you.
You stopped swimming because it messed up your hairstyle.
What? Your hairstyle? Your eight-year-old self would
not be impressed.
But that’s where ‘Once Upon a Time’ comes in – the days when we could play.And I’m not talking about mindless games on our phones. I mean really play.
Sigh…
You grew too tall to ride that awesome bike… but then you didn’t replace it.
The ball you tossed around on the beach became the neighbour’s dog’s ball.
At night they dream of spreadsheets and graphs and overflowing inboxes.
Here are Christoph and Carol.
They’re both really good at their jobs, in fact they both really enjoy their work. But there’s something missing – some part of
themselves that they haven’t thought of in a while.
Christoph packs the bags. Very meticulously.
Carol books the flight.
And look now! They’re reading the storybook you have in your hands. And something in both of them begins to glow – an old flame.
Come, let’s follow Christoph and Carol…
Christoph and Carol arrive on a magical island, full of possibilities. It’s so familiar –
as though they’ve been here before, but so long ago that they can’t quite remember it.
The plane lands, they step off and it’s warm and sunny.
After a bumpy car ride, free of the trafficfrom their routine back home.
Carol pours herself a drink from a machine that fizzes and pops and whirrs – the way her chemistry set
used to do. And it’s delicious!
After checking into their room, Christoph and Carol are hungry.
Christoph wanders through the hotel entrance, a jungle of plants that makes him think of Tarzan.
They take a basket and picnic on the beach. The sky is huge and it feels as though anything at all is possible.
As the sun sets, Carol and Christoph follow the sound of music…
Downstairs they find an incredible spread of food, like a market they
once went to in France.
and discover a party on the sand.
The next morning, there’s a welcome knock at the door; it’s the early wake-up call to get ready for the day’s adventure.
and are greeted back on board with a meal of fresh seafood.
Later that morning they snorkel off a boat…
and a hundred ways to enjoy the ocean.
For a second Christoph is a pirate, adrift on the seven seas.
That afternoon they head down to the boathouse to see what’son offer. But it’s not just boats they find.
They find friends…
Back at the hotel they select fun t-shirts as souvenirs, each for the other.
When they’re done, Carol finds the perfect spot for them to rinse off.
They wave goodbye to their island paradise and board the plane.
At home, can you guess what the first thing they do is?
Their holiday passes too quickly and it’s soon time to leave.
The next day Carol remembers that awesome bike that she never replaced.
And Christoph remembers how much he loved tossing a tennis
ball around in the garden.
They install a speaker in their shower!
And now, at night they don’t dream of spreadsheets and graphs and overflowing inboxes.
They dream of ‘Once Upon a Time’ – and they can’t wait to go back.
