PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

For our July workshop Sherry Siercks led our painting of Oscar the Ostrich, It was such a cute project. Thank you Sherry.

We had 5 visitors to attend our meeting. Two of them for our meeting only, are acquainted with our long time member Mary Higdon and wanted to

visit our chapter. The other three came together as well, and two of the three are artists that use different mediums. Maureen likes watercolor. Madeleine a multimedia artist who has been published in our local magazines for her work. She brought and shared some of her art work during our show and tell. And Marsha joined in to paint with us and shared that she enjoyed the class. We hope to see Marsha painting with us in the future as well. It was nice to meet other artists from different artistic pathways.

We have replaced the camera projector that our past president Cather Ferrer so graciously lent to us for our teachers, and we thank you Cathy for sharing with the chapter for the last 2 ½ years. This has been a valuable asset to teachers and members.

Your Chapter Board Members are in the midst of finalizing the Rewards Point System criteria for the Chapter members. We will have updated news to share with you by our August meeting, as well as an e-blast will come out about the finalization to all as this is very important information for members. ~ Debi Crook

SEPTEMBER WORKSHOP NOTES

If you plan on taking the September 7th workshop, taught by Patte Kayne, here are the 3 ways to get the pattern and instructions:

1. This design was in the August 2018 issue of Painting World Maga-zine (actually the cover). If you want to use the magazine, that is fine.

2. If you don't have the magazine or just want this as a packet, contact Patte at [email protected]. She will only print a copy for you if you let her know by September 2nd. The cost for this is $12 - $9

goes back to Leslie and $3 to Patte for ink & paper (there are 8 color pages in this packet. She has Leslie's permission to do this for those that have a hard time downloading and printing e-packets.

3. Go to www.decorativepaintingstore.com, search e-patterns by art-ist for "Leslie Smith", and purchase the Trick or Treat packet, down-load it, print your copy and bring with you to the workshop. The cost to do it this way is $9. ~Patte Kayne

NEW TEACHING CAMERA DEBUTS

Sherry Siercks debuted use of the new teaching camera during her “Oscar Ostrich” Workshop. Debi Crook kind-ly shopped a variety of choices. Greg Case ordered the device and set it up for use at the July 13th work-shop. It is an IPEVO VZ-X Camera. Although it is wire-less, the American Legion TV is not a Smart TV. Con-

necting the camera to the TV via an HDMI cable, however, is simple, “goof-proof,” and only takes a couple minutes. In addition, we have created a very brief, illustrated set up booklet, which will be useful for any Chapter member needing to connect the TV and camera. Good pick, Debi! ~ Editor

WORKSHOP GUIDELINES

Editor’s Note – The Chapter Board sat down and worked out two sets of Workshop Guidelines in an effort to enhance the Workshop experience for both teachers and students. It is hoped all will be in-spired and encouraged as we strive to improve the painting class time... and promote the enjoyment of painting!

Workshop Teacher Guidelines One of the key aims of our monthly workshops is to develop the skills of each participant, in order to promote greater enjoyment of painting. Toward that end, teachers are urged to exercise the following guidelines.

1. Explain the use of your medium, and how is best applied to the surface for your project. 2. Describe which brushes work best for the application of medium. 3. Teaching of any special technique (e.g. line work, floating, dry brushing, etc.) should be demonstrated, to show how the technique is best used for your project. Keep a practice board at your side to show, on-screen, how the skill is done. 4. Since we have new painters and we are trying to encourage both chapter membership and interest in painting, be especially mindful of the newest painters and their needs. 5. Circulate throughout the class, check on the progress of each person, and provide individual assistance to the extent possible. 6. Ask if anyone needs assistance, periodically, during your class. 7. Be mindful of your students’ painting pace; ask if everyone is ready to move on. Give an extra few moments if necessary.

REWARD POINTS PROGRAM REFINED

The Reward Points Program will run through October. At the November 2nd Chapter meeting, Penny Brown will have each member’s cumulative points tallied, along with the value of the person’s SDP Renewal Scholarship. Each member is responsible for the balance due, which is payable to the Chapter Treasurer by November 15th. The Chapter will then handle SDP renewals by the membership renewal deadline.

8. Ask the class if they need a break. 9. Ask what time would be good for a lunch break.

“Remember! We each have a special expertise; we are mentors. Since we can’t take it with us when we leave this earth, let’s pass it along to those who are interested in learning!”

~ Debi Crook

Student Guidelines

1. Be prepared! Bring your supplies. Make sure you have any special supplies requested by the teacher, and bring a PREPARED SURFACE if not provided. Trying to basecoat a surface right before the class is to begin does not give the paint time to cure properly and may make your painting experience more difficult. 2. Don’t expect your neighbor to be your instructor. Ask the

teacher for help. This reduces the chatter so everyone can hear the teacher. You might be missing out on important instructions.

3. Use every class as a learning experience regardless of the level of difficulty. Every new technique learned needs practice. 4. Let the teacher know if you are unfamiliar with a technique or medium featured. This will let the teacher know you may need a little extra help during class. 5. Bring an extra surface or practice board you can practice on before painting on your project if you know ahead of time that you are challenging your skill level.

6. Don’t be too hard on yourself if you are learning new techniques during the class. It is difficult to master a new technique the first time. And – PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE!

“Do it again. Play it again. Sing it again. Read it again. Write it again. Sketch it again. Rehearse it again. Run it again. Try it again. Because again is practice, and practice is improvement, and improvement only leads to perfection.” ~ Richelle E. Goodrich, Smile Anyway
