The protagonist, a young male is suggested to have a form of mental illness as the other characters are used to highlight his different moods and personalities. These characters, of diverse ages and gender, are shown to be aggressive, innocent and many other types of dispositions. The scene is really disorientating because of the excessive talking and tense music. When another man walks in, and the other characters have gone away, it is revealed that he is in fact the doctor and the original woman was another voice in his head. This is the significant part of the story as it is the plot twist. Todorov’s Narrative Stages: Equilibrium- The man sitting on this own in the room. Disruption of the equilibrium- Talking to the woman psychiatrist and his multiple personalities appearing. Reinstatement of the equilibrium- He begins talking to the real psychiatrist. Micro-analysis: Camera: Firstly, there is a loose frame near the beginning of the film; the protagonist is sitting on his own, in an isolated room in the centre of the shot. This camera position suggests that he is alone. A high angle is also used to connote his inferiority and vulnerability which is later to be revealed because of this illness.

Synopsis: A man in an institution talks to a woman, supposedly a psychiatrist.

Todorov’s Narrative Stages:

Equilibrium- The man sitting on this own in the room. Disruption of the equilibrium- Talking to the woman psychiatrist and his multiple

personalities appearing. Reinstatement of the equilibrium- He begins talking to the real psychiatrist.

Micro-analysis:

Camera:

Firstly, there is a loose frame near the beginning of the film; the protagonist is sitting on his own, in an isolated room in the centre of the shot. This camera position suggests that he is alone. A high angle is also used to connote his inferiority and vulnerability which is later to be revealed because of this illness. Therefore, this shot indicates that he is a weak and defenceless character.

A shot reverse shot is present during the psychiatrist and the protagonist’s conversation highlighting their communication. This is a very common shot to show relationship between the two characters.

A panning movement reveals the other characters (personalities) in the scene. This is a moment of discovery when all of the personalities are revealed because of his illness. It provides an insight into the anxiety and cacophony of sounds and thoughts filled in their brain making the scene very tense.

The woman psychiatrist and the protagonist are shown to be sitting at the desk with the use of a long shot at a low angle. Natural light is shining through from the windows highlighting the man’s imprisonment in this place but also his inability to expel his violent thoughts in his head. The light could signify the need for freedom and frustration to escape his state of mind.

Sound:

Tense music is used to create an unsettling feeling and non- diegetic sounds show an aggressive man’s deep and harrowing voice. It is used as an effect to enhance the hostility creating an uneasy atmosphere.Keys jingle when unlocking the door, which is a diegetic sound, suggesting he is imprisoned because of his illness. Also the dialogue within the scene between the characters is diegetic sounds as well as the synchronised speech with the personalities.

Editing:

The duration of the shots is shortened in length when the scene builds tensions to create a disjoined effect. The bombardment of cuts is very disconcerting and could represent the conflict in the protagonist’s mind and inability to control his thoughts.

Mise- en- scene:

The scenes vary from low key to high key lighting, the characters walk in and out of shadows to create an eerie effect as the audience is unaware what is lurking in the shadows. It could suggest that there is a mystery in this place and there is something secret hidden in the darkness. The change of lighting could also connote the protagonist’s change in personalities because of his mental illness highlighting he is not always sane.

The costume in the film consists of the woman psychiatrist wearing a white laboratory coat which is typical iconography for this occupation. The clothes stereotype her as she is in the medical profession. However, this subverts the female stereotype as usually men are portrayed as having the professional occupation.

Page 3: Deconstructions Inside

The young girl is in very stereotypical clothes for her age and gender as his hair is in bunches ties up with pink ribbons and in a flowery dress.

The protagonist is in a white shirt which looks very unkempt and off colour, it could symbolise a straight- jacket in archaic prison, where his freedom is stripped from him. His hair is shown to be messy and greasy to evoke his lack of respect for himself or effort to remain attired.

The male psychiatrist is wearing a suit and tie which is not shown to be particularly smart as his top button is undone but is the best dressed in the scene to highlight his occupation. The character has a beard and is of a mature age which is stereotypical of a psychiatrist.

Iconography includes the mould on the walls to enhance the eerie and isolated effect. There is a lamp in the corner and a table in the centre of the room suggesting it to be an interrogation room. Also, through the windows there are trees in the outside which could connote that they are trapped ‘inside’ (the name of the short film) to highlight the person’s isolation from the world around him.
