Transcript of Decongel Overview
* * = contamination• Neutral-pH, water-based, polymer hydrogel for decontamination– Utilizes surfactants to
lift contaminants– Soluble chelators bind
contaminants for transport
– Contaminants pulled into polymer upon drying (encapsulation)
What is CBI Polymers Gel?
2
• Immediate fixation of the contamination
• Works on variety of substrates including concrete
• Effective on hydrophobic, hydrophilic, organic, inorganic, and particulate contaminants
• Environmentally friendly, no waste water
Apply Dry Peel
Safe to Use
• Safe and user-friendly• ~100 times less toxic than mouthwash• water-based with a near neutral pH• very high tensile strength for ease in
removal

CBI Polymers Gel at U.S. Nuclear Power Plant
• How it’s used:– Reactor parts and tools (i.e.
dryer/separator strongback)– Refuel floor, on vessel
equipment, (dis-assembly tools), grapples, plant shafts, poles, etc.
– Floors and walls, post-flood– Spray gel on equipment as a
fixative, then ship– Hot Particle Zone free release
(i.e. where control rods are cleaned)
– Outages and regular maintenance
“No chemistry issues – can use on any system anywhere in the plant”

Applying the Gel (cont.)
• Gel applied 3” up the wall– Tape edge– Ensure adequate
thickness
• Drain covered with tape

Peeling the Coating
• Coating was peeled the next day
• Came up from floor very easily

Contact Gamma of Peeling
• Peeling: 4.5 mrem contact gamma
• More than expected recovered on the peel
• Area at the HX1 now has 0 cpm loose
• Rubber area has been removed
