Topic: Reteaching decomposing numbers
Grade: Kindergarten
Standards: CCSS.Math.Content.K.OA.A.3 Decompose numbers less than or equal to 10 into
pairs in more than one way, e.g., by using objects or drawings, and record each decomposition by a drawing or equation (e.g., 5 = 2 + 3 and 5 = 4 + 1)
Objectives: Students will be able to decompose the numbers 4 and 5 into pairs in more than
one way. Students will be able to write number sentences in more than one way for the
numbers 4 and 5. Students will be able to use manipulatives to demonstrate the ways to decompose
the numbers 4 and 5.
Materials: Decomposing numbers manipulatives (rings and beads) Number sentences worksheet Pencils
Rationale: This lesson is meant to be a reteaching of decomposing numbers. This lesson will
be taught with a small group of students who are struggling with the concept. My goal for this lesson is to teach students how to use manipulatives to decompose numbers. Using manipulatives will assist the students in writing number sentences for the numbers 4 and 5.
Procedure: Remind students of their previous work with decomposing numbers.
o Decomposing numbers is another way of saying, “How many ways can you make…”
Introduce students to the manipulatives that they will be using.o Use the number 3 as an example to demonstrate use of the manipulatives.
Explain the decomposing numbers worksheet to students. o Use the number 3 to demonstrate how to complete the worksheet.
Give each student a number 4 ring followed by a number 5 ring. Monitor the students’ progress as they use the manipulatives to complete the
worksheet. Conference with each student to check for understanding.
Other Considerations: Students will be grouped by ability for this lesson. All students will be seated at a back table away from the rest of the class.
Assessment: Students will be able to complete the number sentences worksheet with 100%
accuracy. Students can use the manipulatives to demonstrate the different ways to make the
numbers 4 and 5 (check during conferencing).
