    1.1 Command Syntax

    To invoke NCP, type RU N S YS$SYSTEM:NCP at the D CL prompt. The N C P >

prompt indicates that you are using the NCP utility program. When you receive

this prompt, you can enter NCP commands.

    14/252

    Description1.1 Command Syntax

The NCP command syntax has four parts: a command verb, a component, one or

more para meters a nd, optiona lly, one or m ore qualifi ers. Table 11 is a n example

    of t h is syn t a x .

    SUMMARY

For each command, you must supply a command verb and a component. Some

continua tion line convention (a hyphen a s th e last chara cter in the line). The

N C P > prompt is not display ed on continua tion lines; instead, continuat ion lines

prompt with an underscore character. For example:

    NCP>SET EXECUTOR -_ ADDRESS 11 -_ INCOMING TIMER 30 -_ STATE ONNCP>

In command fi les, use an exclama tion point ( ! ) to designate a comment line. NCP

    Description1.2 Entering Commands

Using Wildcard Characters to Enter Commands

You can use the asterisk (* ) and the percent sign (%) as wildcard characters in

You can use the w ildcar d cha ra cters to represent the following component n am es:

The asterisk wildcard represents one or more characters, while the percent sign

    Rules for Using Wildcard Characters

    Description1.3 Command Prompting

Each prompt consists of two parts: the component or parameter desired, and its

format. The syntax is as follows:

    1.3.1 Exiting the Prompting Sequence

You can exit a prompting s equence by pressing Ct rl/Z. When y ou do so, th e NCP >

completely, press C tr l/Z at th e NCP > prompt.

The following example shows how to interrupt a prompting sequence and exit

    NCP.

    NCP>SET Return(CIRCUIT, EXECUTOR, KNOWN, LINE,

LOGGING, MODULE, NODE, OBJECT): LINELine ID (dev-c-u.t): FZA-1Number of receive buffers (1-1024): Ctrl/Z...NCP> Ctrl/Z$

If , after responding to one or more prompts, you want to exit the prompting

sequence but retain whatever information you have provided in the database, you

can respond to the next prompt with _DONE, as follows:

NCP>DEFINE OBJECT ReturnObject Name (12 characters): TALOSObject Number (0-255): 101File name (filename): TALOS.EXEPrivileges (List of VMS privileges): _DONENCP>

    18/252

    Description1.3 Command Prompting

Using _DONE may not be successful, however, if you do not provide all of the

necessary parameters for a given component. For example:

NCP>DEFINE OBJECT ReturnObject Name (12 characters): RIGELObject Number (0-255): ReturnFile name (filename): RIGEL.EXEPrivileges (List of VMS privileges): _DONE%NCP-I-NMLRSP, listener response - Parameter missing, numberObject = RIGELNCP>

This example is simila r to th e previous exam ple except tha t the object number

is omitted. B ecause each object mus t ha ve an object num ber defined in t he

database, and because none currently exists for object RIGEL, NCP does not

    u p da t e t h e d a t a b a se w it h t h is in f orm a t ion .

    1.3.2 Prompting Examples

The following exam ples illustra te t hree types of prompting t ha t NCP provides:

    P ro m pt s t o su pp ly m issin g com p on e n t

NCP>CLEAR Return(CIRCUIT, EXECUTOR, KNOWN, LINE, LOGGING, MODULE, NODE, OBJECT):

    N CP p rom p t s f or t h e l ine-id for t his component because it is not provided

The following example shows variat ions of the prompting scheme forp a ra m e t e r va lu es:

NCP>SET EXECUTOR ReturnNode address (1.1-63.1023): 2.11State (ON, OFF, SHUT, RESTRICTED): ONSystem id string (32 characters:) "DECnet for OpenVMS"..

consequently, NCP asks if a ll va lues should be removed. The Y para meter

Because RETURN is the response to the first prompt, NCP prompts for all of

1.4 Component and Parameter Syntax Rules

The syntax of the various component-name, parameter, and qualifier values

is summa rized in Table 12. In t he follow ing ta ble, a ll numeric values are in
