OOW-'IAND NARRATIVE FOR TEE MONTH MAY 1945 oJi' .TH1i! ACTIVITIES OF TEE 1915T TANK BATTALION

In the first part of the period of the first of May the Battalion continued in support of 45th Inf Div. Companies A and C had no activity, Company B supported the 179th Inf in clearing that part of the sector in the city of MUNCHENeast of the Isar River. No organized resistance was enountered.

In the af~ernoon orders were received from Division to assemble the Battalion-in the vicinity of the airport between NEUBlBERG and UN~BRBlBERG.. During the afternoon and eveningall elements closed into the airfield, and billeted in bUildings of the airport. .

On the second, 36 Luftwaffe women, who had been found on the airport upon our arrival, were evacuated with a few miscellaneous prisoners brought in by patrols. Four road blocks and one bridge guard were set up in the Battalion control sector. The bulk of the Battalion'e~gaged in maintenance of vehicles and rehabilitation of the men. Men were furnished as guards on several key "targets" in the 1ifffi'JCEEN area.

On the third, guards east of the Isar River were relieved by the l79th Inf Regt and the 42nd Inf.Div. The Battalion was attached for operations to t~e 157th Inf.

During the first week of May rehabilitation was stressed, and for the first time in many-months great emphasis was placed on the wearing of the uniform; and military courtesy.

Wntil the ninth the Battalion guarded a number of minoE strategic. targets such as a C8lllera factory, a sauerKraut works and a liquor cellar. ~lin~r looting and rioting developea on several occasions, but was quickly put down.

On the eighth, word was received from Lt Col ESClillNBURG that our guards would be relieved and we would concentrate on maintenance and training. An 01 was received on the ninth relieving our men with elements of the 179th Inf.

On the tenth relief of all guards elements was completed. S/Sgt Weber received his promotion to 2nd Lt.

E T 'IClED BATTALION NARRATIVE FOR MO y 1945

. ~.....

The~eriGd from the 11th of May to end of ~my was o~e in fhich the Battalion remained at the German Airport at NEUBlBERG, sou h of ~ruNICH. . ~

At the, beginning of the period the Battalion maint ined road blocks at 719266 and RJ 714248. The PU+pose Of these oad blocks

non-Ger.mans who were attempting to return home on heir own.

On the 19th of Llay, Battalipn took over gua.. of the 9th Hungarian Infantry Division which was "caged" in he south block . of barracks on the airport. In conjunction with taking over the Hungarian ~risoner guard the Battalion discontinued its road blocks. The guard of the Hungarians required one company. This was rotated between the four line companies giving each company three days for training for every day of guard.

On Sunday 19 May, the Battalion held a Memorial Service for our dead in the German War.

Prayers were ,said by Chaplains MAT~~VEY and CJ~EY and Capt SHAINHAUSE, eo C., 120 Med Bn. Capt FISHER of the 45th Division spoke briefly on the fighting record of the Battalion and paid homage to th~se wfto had died in the fight.

vord was received on the 25th that. Capt WARD had been killed in an auto~obile accident. The accident was bitterly ironical as CAPT WARD had come through many months of tough combat, been decorated wounded three times only to lose his life after the curtain had fallen on the last act.

During the period a great improvement in military courtesy, discipline, and general appearance was made in the Battalion. Barracks and kitchens becmae daily neater and cleaner. The Battalion had succeeded in going into a garrison setup much more efficiently than had been thought possible when the fighting ended.

The training continued during the period and athletic facilities were developed 'to include three baseball fields, two volleyball courts, horseshoe courts and a small swimming paolo

Some of the old timers in the Battalion returned home, however, for the majority it was a job of waiting until the unit received a category status. Only then would the men know what was in store for them of the Battalion, whether or not the Battalion still had fighting ahead of it in the Japanese waro
