Aisha. What do you think of managers in
organizations are for? They are paid sohigh though every other person is
contributing in the business activities
Sidra. Managers are meant to take
decisions for their organizations to make
profits and getting maximum out of thebusiness. But people say

Amna. Let me quote here few of the sayings
of great business gurus. Peter Drucker says,
Checking the results of a decision against
its expectations shows executives what
their strengths are, where they need to
improve, and where they lack knowledge
or information.

And Dr. Phil put things as: Sometimes you
make the right decision, sometimes youmake the decision right.
If we look into the view point of AnthonyRobbins, he is of the view like this:
Remember, a real decision is measured by
the fact that you've taken new action. If
there's no action, you haven't truly decided.

Sidra. Ah, it reminds me a very interesting situation in which aprofessor takes a decision, if you people agreed on then should
I share that with you? (this should be spoken while facing theaudience)
Amna and Aisha. Sure, please go ahead
Sidra. Two university students and a professor were walking
through a city park and they find an antique oil lamp. They rubit and a Genie comes out in a puff of smoke. The Genie says, "Iusually only grant three wishes, so I'll give each of you justone." "Me first! Me first!" says the one student. "I want to be inthe Bahamas, driving a speedboat, having great bungalow and
huge bank balance" Poof! He's gone. "Me next! Me next!" saysthe 2nd Student. "I want to be in Switzerland, driving Mercedes, and among richest people of the world." Poof! He's gone."You're next," the Genie says to the professor. The professorsays, "I want those guys back in the lab after lunch."

Aisha Very interesting, it means, when you have to
take a decision and you don't take into considerationits antecedents and consequences, that itself is a
decision.
Amna. Oh, of course yes, whenever you see a
successful business, someone once made a
courageous decision.
Sidra. Well, putting altogether about decision makingit is more important to analyze the situation in hand.
Better you understand the factors, better your
decision would be.

Aisha and Amna. Of course Sidra, we do agree
that analyzing the General and specificbusiness environments, we are in better
position to take good decisions
Sidra. Yes, let we share with the class a very
famous story you might have heard already,we can conclude the decision making lessons
out of it.

Here we go.
Sidra, What you can do is just divide these dialogues, and speak as the
slides appear. one lady speaking the upper caption and others take the
dialogues of hare and turtle. I have just put fictitious names to give you
hint how can you do that, now in the story you can divide the portions
and speak up. You can change the dialogues to best fit and alter themaccording to your demands. This is just an idea how to present
interesting things (NOT A FINAL PRESENTATION) and how to relate
them to any business terminology. Things are simple but its your
presentations which make them superior, your communication stylemakes it worth listening and dramatic. GOOD LUCK

Amna. Good old lessons in decision
makingand teamwork from an age-old fable

The Hare

Aisha. Once upon a time a tortoise
and a hare had an argument aboutwho was faster.
Im the fastest
runner.
Thats not true.
The fastest runner is
me!

11/40
Ok, lets have
a race.
Fine!
They decided to settle
the argument with a race. They agreed on a route
and started off the race.
-

12/40
The hare shot ahead and ran briskly for
some time. Then seeing that he was farahead of the tortoise, he thought he'd sit
under a tree for some time and relax
before continuing the race.
Poor guy! Even if I
take a nap, he
could not catch up
with me.
-
7/28/2019 Decision making and team building (Hare and Trotoise)
13/40
He sat under the tree and soon fell asleep.
-
7/28/2019 Decision making and team building (Hare and Trotoise)
14/40
The tortoise plodding on overtook
him and soon finished the race, emerging as the undisputed champ.
-
7/28/2019 Decision making and team building (Hare and Trotoise)
15/40
The hare woke up and realized that he'd
lost the race.
-
7/28/2019 Decision making and team building (Hare and Trotoise)
16/40
The moral of the story is thatslow and steadywins the race.
This is the version of the story that we've allgrown up with.
-

17/40
The story continues
-
7/28/2019 Decision making and team building (Hare and Trotoise)
18/40
The hare was disappointed
at losing the race and he
did some soul-searching.
He realized that he'd lostthe race only because he
had been overconfident,
careless and lax. If he had
not taken things for granted, there's no way the tortoise
could have beaten him.
Why did
I lose
the race?
Analysis
-

19/40
Can we have
another race?
Ok.
So he challenged thetortoise to another race.
The tortoise agreed.
-
7/28/2019 Decision making and team building (Hare and Trotoise)
20/40
This time, the hare went allout and ran without stopping
from start to finish. He won
by several miles.
-
7/28/2019 Decision making and team building (Hare and Trotoise)
21/40
The moral of the story?
Fast and consistent will always beat the slow and
steady. If you have two people in your organization,
one slow, methodical and reliable, and the other fastand still reliable at what he does, the fast and reliable
chap will consistently climb the organizational ladder
faster than the slow, methodical chap.
It's good to be slow and steady; but it's better to be
fast and reliable.
-
7/28/2019 Decision making and team building (Hare and Trotoise)
22/40
But the story doesn't end here
-
7/28/2019 Decision making and team building (Hare and Trotoise)
23/40
The tortoise did some thinking
this time, and realized that there's
no way he can beat the hare in arace the way it was currently
formatted. How can
I win the
hare?
-
7/28/2019 Decision making and team building (Hare and Trotoise)
24/40
He thought for a while,
and then challenged
the hare to another race, but on a slightly
different route.
The hare agreed.
Sure!
Can we have another race?
This time well go
through a different route.
-
7/28/2019 Decision making and team building (Hare and Trotoise)
25/40
They started off. In keeping with
his self-made commitment to be
consistently fast, the hare took offand ran at top speed until he came
to a broad river. The finishing
line was a couple of kilometers
on the other side of the river.
Goal
-
7/28/2019 Decision making and team building (Hare and Trotoise)
26/40
The hare sat there wondering what
to do. In the meantime the tortoise
trundled along, got into the river, swam to the opposite bank,
continued walking and finished the
race.
Whatshould I
do?

The moral of the story?
First identify your core competency and then change the
playing field to suit your core competency.
In an organization, if you are a good speaker, make sure youcreate opportunities to give presentations that enable the senior
management to notice you.
If your strength is analysis, make sure you do some sort ofresearch, make a report and send it upstairs.
Working to your strengths will not only get you noticed, but will
also create opportunities for growth and advancement.

The story still hasn't ended
-
7/28/2019 Decision making and team building (Hare and Trotoise)
29/40
The hare and the tortoise, by
this time, had become pretty
good friends and they did some
thinking together. Both realized
that the last race could have
been run much better.
-
7/28/2019 Decision making and team building (Hare and Trotoise)
30/40
So they decided to do the
last race again, but to run
as a team this time.
Hi, buddy. How
about doing our last
race again?
Great! I think we
could do it much
better, if we two
help each other.
Hi, buddy. How
about doing our last
race again?
-
7/28/2019 Decision making and team building (Hare and Trotoise)
31/40
They started off, and this time the
hare carried the tortoise till the
riverbank.
-
7/28/2019 Decision making and team building (Hare and Trotoise)
32/40
There, the tortoise took over and
swam across with the hare on hisback.
-
7/28/2019 Decision making and team building (Hare and Trotoise)
33/40
On the opposite bank, the hare
again carried the tortoise and they
reached the finishing line together.
They both felt a greater sense of
satisfaction than they'd felt earlier.
-
7/28/2019 Decision making and team building (Hare and Trotoise)
34/40
The moral of the story?
It's good to be individually brilliant and to have
strong core competencies; but unless you're able to
work in a team and harness each other's core
competencies, you'll always perform below parbecause there will always be situations at which
you'll do poorly and someone else does well.
Teamwork is mainly about situational leadership, letting the person with the relevant core competency
for a situation take leadership.
-

35/40
There are more lessons to be learnt from this story.
Note that neither the hare nor the tortoise gave up after failures.
The hare decided to work harder and put in more effort after his
failure. The tortoise changed his strategy because he was already
working as hard as he could.
In life, when faced with failure, sometimes it is appropriate to
work harder and put in more effort. Sometimes it is appropriate
to change strategy and try something different. And sometimes it
is appropriate to do both.
The hare and the tortoise also learnt another vital lesson. When
we stop competing against a rival and instead start competing
against the situation, we perform far better.

Sidra, here again your is choice whether to present this case
or not, this is pure application of the previous concepts. You
can make dialogues from this case and present
When Roberto Goizueta took over as CEO of Coca-Cola in
the 1980s, he was faced with intense competition from Pepsithat was eating into Coke's growth. His executives were
Pepsi-focused and intent on increasing market share 0.1 per
cent a time.
Roberto decided to stop competing against Pepsi and instead
compete against the situation of 0.1 per cent growth.
-
7/28/2019 Decision making and team building (Hare and Trotoise)
37/40
He asked his executives what was the average fluid intake of
an American per day? The answer was 14 ounces. What was
Coke's share of that? Two ounces. Roberto said Coke neededa larger share of that market. The competition wasn't Pepsi. It
was the water, tea, coffee, milk and fruit juices that went into
the remaining 12 ounces. The public should reach for a Coke
whenever they felt like drinking something.
To this end, Coke put up vending machines at every street
corner. Sales took a quantum jump and Pepsi has never quite
caught up since.

38/40
To sum up, the story of the hare and tortoise
teaches us many things:
Never give up when faced with failure
Fast and consistent will always beat slow andsteady
Work to your competencies
Compete against the situation, not against arival.
Pooling resources and working as a team will
always beat individual performers
-

Lets go, make decision while analyzingourselves keeping in view the situationalfactors, take good decisions and build
stronger teams!
