December‟s meeting was a relatively short one due to the sparse number of paintable restaurant patrons available. After speaking with the restaurant server we were made aware of the fact that this dwindling attendance was the norm during the early winter months until cabin fever struck and people once again began bundling up their children just to get them out of the house. This of course didn‟t dampen our desire to do some artistic frolicking and we endeavored to either paint each other or do some good old fashioned networking. The one thing that didn‟t change was our inspiration challenge reveals, which went off with very few snags. I have to thank everyone who has stuck with this monthly challenge as it has become something cool to look forward to at every meeting. We did have a few patrons come up to be painted during the jam and due to the sparse numbers, many took advantage of our willingness to paint and walked away sporting sev- eral designs from different painters! The one good thing about having so few faces to paint was the opportunity we were given to educate the parents and do a little self marketing for our indi- vidual businesses. All in all, I‟d say we accomplished what we came to accomplish for the most part. As an extra added bonus, Jared of Jared‟s Goodies showed up with lots and lots of cos- metic glitter and other face painting staples in tow! Jared is the son of area clown/facepainter Lisa “Sparkles” who, due to prior commitment hasn‟t been able to attend any of our meetings but often sends her regards. It was really nice of Jared to come all the way out to Valleyview to satisfy our Glitter needs and if you somehow get through your stash and need more you certainly can‟t go wrong by contacting him for a refill. January is going to kick off for the NEO Jammers with a change of venue that I think will be

a good thing for the most part. While we had a wonderful run with the friendly and helpful

staff of Hoggie‟s in Valley View, the limited menu left a lot to be desired for those of us look-

ing for healthier food fare. Our January 5th meeting will be held at Home Town Buffet on

Snow Road in Parma Ohio and it is anticipated that this will be our 2011 meeting spot if all

goes well. For more information about this new venue see page 6.

Since we‟ll be feeling out this new venue, it‟s been decided that this meeting will be more

about getting a feel for the place (and the expansive menu!) and determining how this new

eating arrangement will affect the content we present at the meetings. That being said, if

you don‟t need it for the Inspiration Challenge Reveal, you can probably leave your kits at

home since we most likely, won‟t be painting any patrons this month.

As you know, our darling Connie came down with a nasty case of Bronchitis the week of

our scheduled Christmas Party/Gift Swap, so we will make this inaugural meeting our Christ-

mas Party make-up date and conduct the gift swap there. Again, I stress that the gift swap is

completely voluntary and if you don‟t wish to participate, you don‟t have to. We will do the

exchange at 7pm which should give anyone, who desires to participate, time to get to the

restaurant. If you want to participate, please bring your wrapped/bagged gift to the meet-

ing where I‟ll have a box set aside to receive all of the would-be gifts.

We will also be presenting our “The Bolder the Better” Inspiration Challenge designs to the

group. If you have a bold and beautiful (or gruesome) design to share, please do share. We

ask that, in the interest of keeping things moving, that you have your step-by-step photo-

graphs ready to share or have your model (whether you bring one or he/she is one of the

group) ready to be painted when it‟s time for the reveals.

All in all, this meeting is going to be pretty laid back and celebratory. If anyone has any-

thing that they would like to share, please let me (Jeanette) know as soon as possible so that

I can carve out some time in the agenda for you!

On the agenda for this meeting:

5:00-6:00pm Meet and Greet, & Discussion

6:00-7:00pm Design Inspiration Reveals

7:00-7:30pm Gift Swap

7:30-8:30pm More Meeting, Greeting and Discussing (and maybe a little painting!)

Hi Guys! With 2010 closing and 2011 staring us in the face, I thought it would be a good idea

to go ahead and give a brief recap of what some would consider good face painting Jam etiquette.

Mind you, there are no laws governing our behavior or practices during our jam sessions but in the

interest of maintaining a safe group, I feel it‟s better if we adhere to some sort of established rules. Most

of this you‟ve already heard before, but bear with me:

Purpose: This is a group for area face painting professionals to get together to network and hone artis-

tic skill. This is not a teaching group. What this means is that attendees and guests should be working in

a professional face painters capacity already. The presence of those who are seeking to siphon knowl-

edge from established artists in the interest of becoming a face painter will ultimately pose a threat to

the wealth of knowledge the group has. This is not saying that you can‟t train up a new face

painter...we just ask that you not do that training at our monthly jam sessions.

Sharing: During the course of any meeting, ideas and information may be revealed (either through

direct conversation or via an overheard discussion). It is imperative that all such information be

treated as privileged and not repeated to non-members. The use of shared information in any way

that constitutes fraud, defamation of character or cutthroat business practices is prohibited and will

result in an immediate expulsion from the group. What this means is that anyone who takes advantage

of privileged information in an effort to hurt another member or that results in a negative impact on

their business (i.e., stolen gigs/accounts) will no longer be welcomed as a safe member of the group.

Marketing: The marketing of oneself during the jams is perfectly allowable as long as it is done in good

taste and ethically. We are there to broadcast our presence to the people of North East Ohio so the

distribution of business cards is not only permitted, it‟s encouraged. What is not encouraged however,

is the act of poaching. What is poaching? Well, an example would be to have one painter hand out

HER business cards to the parents of a child who is being painted by another painter. This sends a mis-

leading message to the parents about how to contact the painter who did the representative work on

their child and is adamantly discouraged. If another painter is painting a child, that painter‟s card

should be distributed to the parents. If the parents ASK for the card of another painter AFTER the paint-

ing has been done and the rightful painter has given the chance to give them his/her card, then no

violation has been committed. No painter “owns” an area so it is best to allow each painter to decide

whether a potential future client is out of driving range.

Kits: The environment that has been established for the jams is that of safety. Safety of intellectual as

well as personal property is of utmost importance to the success of the group. Painters are being asked

to trust their fellow associates not to sabotage, violate or pilfer their kits, and that‟s not an unreason-

able expectation. It is expected that you extend the same level of courtesy towards another painter‟s

kit that you‟d expect your customers/audience to extend to yours. That means, asking permission be-

fore taking any portion of another painter‟s kit in hand. This also means obtaining permission before

“borrowing” any portion of another painters kit and ensuring that your guests (including children) ex-

tend the same courtesy to every painter.

Security: Naturally, we can‟t always be at our kits at every minute and enjoy the networking process

with other painters. Because of this, it is asked that we all take part in the process of policing the setups

of our fellow members when they are absent. Nobody should be touching anyone else‟s kit, including

the parents or the children who come to be painted. If someone is handling an absent painter‟s kit,

please do your part to discourage the behavior and bring it to the attention of the owner as soon as

possible. The last thing we want is for the character of the group to be called into question after an

item disappears. Not only does policing protect the interests of the group, it sends a message of soli-

darity and professionalism to the general public.

Participation: While nobody can make anyone else paint during the jam sessions, it is strongly sug-

gested that every member make an active effort to be a participant in the activities. The meetings are

held once per month and participation is a relatively small request for so infrequent a get together.

Photos: While taking photographs to submit to the newsletter or for personal reference is perfectly al-

lowable, the taking of step-by-step design photos is discouraged unless the artist consents to your do-

ing so. Likewise, the publishing of step-by-steps of other artists work without expressed permission from

that artist is also discouraged.

Well, those are the rules of etiquette in a nutshell! We don‟t need a book of rules to adhere

to, just these few specific ones. I feel it‟s best to leave the rest to the laws of commonsense and de-

cency until the guild is formerly established. 2010 was a pretty good year for our group and I think that

2011 will prove to be an even better one as we move forward!

December’s Inspiration Challenge Results December’s Inspiration Challenge Results December‟s Inspiration Challenge was themed “Christmas Tidings” and the group was tasked with presenting a design that depicted

the joy and whimsy of the holiday season. As per usual, many jammers were more than willing to share their take on this very festive holi-

day theme!

1. Jeanette shared her whimsical “Under the

Mistletoe” face design.

2. Lori Jaryga presented her take on this ador-

able Snowman design.

3. Karen Fair gave this whimsical

“Hippopatamus for Christmas” design a whirl

on her granddaughter.

4. Connie Ritter showed off her quick and easy

Christmas light/bulb design.

I want to thank all of the ladies who have made

this Inspiration Challenge idea a relative suc-

cess for the group. It takes time and lots of

thought to conceptualize a new design or even

a new spin on an old design and I for one, ap-

preciate the women who have come to the

meetings with design in-tow.

With 2011, I hope to see a greater level of par-

ticipation in this exercise from all of the other

group members because it not only helps to

stretch your creative muscle, but it also helps in

maintaining the environment of mutual shar-

ing/benefit and group cohesiveness.

Thanks again ladies!

Meet the Painter: Lori Jaryga of Fun Faces by Lori Meet the Painter: Lori Jaryga of Fun Faces by Lori (Parma) (Parma) By Jeanette Benware

North East Ohio Face Painters

Anyone seeing Lori Jaryga for the first time would probably think her to be a quiet, unassuming person who likes

her life to be just as calm and uneventful. Even her gentle voice and disarming way of speaking (i.e., the way she

says “thank you, my friend” with childlike ease) would lead you to believe that Lori was more of a lover than a

fighter. Anyone who dares to judge this book by its cover would be in for a very interesting (and fun) awakening.

Having spent a few days in the company of this very interesting lady, I can tell you without a doubt that quiet and

unassuming are NOT the best words to describe this little lady. In fact, Lori Jaryga is a textbook example of what is

meant by the phrase “big things sometimes come in small packages”! Lori‟s quiet nature stems from her penchant

for absorbing what is going around her and her soft spoken mannerisms almost demand an audience. Lori Jaryga

is a fun loving, hilarious, supportive, and no-nonsense woman with a heart of gold and it was a true pleasure to be

able to interview her this month.

Lori is what one would call an artist at heart. Her father, a commercial designer, helped to root her and her siblings

in the world of artistic expression by sending them to art camps and always being supportive of the numerous artistic outlets they chose to

explore. Lori has taken many art related classes (including some at the Akron Art Institute) but concedes that her true love is Oil Painting. In

fact, it was oil painting that paved the way for Lori‟s current love of face painting. When her children were born, Lori was able to take many

of her learned painting techniques and apply them to the painting she did for various school functions and events. Unlike many long-time

painters, Lori didn‟t get her start using acrylics or the acrylic-like Palmer‟s type paints. Lori started her face painting journey with a “Learn to

Face Paint” book that came with a small palette of paints and a brush. Limited in her knowledge of all of the available products, she was

content to simply purchase another book whenever her supply of paints ran out! Naturally, she eventually acquired quite a collection of

books, though when asked just how many of those books she actually bought Lori was adamant that that secret would go with her to her

grave, that and the number of brushes she‟s accumulated!

While Lori started volunteering for the school, it wasn‟t long before her skills were in great demand, so much so that she soon realized that the

small quantity of paint that her how-to books were providing wouldn‟t be enough to paint the number of faces she needed to paint. Deter-

mined to find her paints in greater quantity, Lori took to the internet where she discovered Snazaroo paints. Even though it cost a pretty

penny, Lori purchased a kit online and met the demand she was presented with. It wasn‟t until she found herself in Jinxed that Lori began to

gleam the income potential of making her hobby her business. Jinxed exposed Lori to a greater array of supplies and possibilities and she

was hooked!

While face painting was a nice way to supplement her family‟s income, it also presented a challenge for Lori who had a full time job and a

full-sized family (and all that came with it). Initially, she had a friend help her maintain order in her house since her face painting business took

her out of the home most weekends. Eventually, and with the help of a very supportive husband and family, Lori was able to manage the

juggling act on her own and has been doing it every since. Lori admits that two primary keys to her success have been taking it one day at a

time and the support of her family who has been very helpful in helping her manage her business. Her husband not only assumes a lot of the

house management responsibilities, but also acts as her “roadie” for her gigs. Her children serve as her “line manglers” and her sister is often

her no-nonsense line manager during those gigs where a “line mangler” would not be wise.

The weirdest thing that Lori has been asked to paint was an armpit. The requesters were athletes…drunk ones, and no, she didn‟t do it, can

you blame her? Lori has had the opportunity to paint at many interesting events across North East Ohio (including a psychic fair where her

“aura” caught the attention of a dog psychic…don‟t ask…actually…go ahead and ask, lol) and has lots of funny experiences under her

belt!

The one quirky thing about Lori that she doesn‟t mind sharing is her “kitschy” nature. She loves anything and everything glitter and sequence

and she‟s admits to having a very intense love affair with her beloved Bedazzler. Her most noted accomplishment along these l ines would be

a very elaborate Elvis costume that she made for her husband for Halloween, complete with tons of bedazzeled embellishments, flashing

lights and a silver lined cape. I told you that looks are deceiving and if you don‟t believe me, take a look at Lori‟s fingernails on any given

day…you may just need sunglasses to observe their blingy opulence!

If price were no object, Lori would love to acquire an airbrushing setup because it‟s something that she‟s always been interested in and she

can see the potential creative stretching it could afford…and it looks like fun.

Lori came to the NEO Jammers after a very lengthy and chatty phone call from your truly. I‟d initially intended to just call to extend an invita-

tion to our meetings, but that quickly turned into a long, laughter filled phone discussion that piqued her interest in the group and my interest

in meeting her face to face. At that first meeting she was taken in by the sense of camaraderie she witnessed during that first meeting and

loves being a part of the eclectic bunch of crazy artists…okay…she said “group”, but I felt the need to be more specific than that.

The one quality that Lori brings to the face painting table is her absolute love of what she does and her eagerness to think outside of the pro-

verbial box. She loves a challenge to her creativity and will try her hand at kicking any design up a few notches for originality. Lori‟s love of

face painting is quite evident in the way that she interacts with not only the people she‟s painting, but also the people who watch her paint.

Who doesn‟t love a face painter who is upbeat, energetic and excited about wielding her brush?

If there‟s one quality that Lori would like to expand upon it would be her mastery of techniques and designs. She believes that that mastery

will allow her to do more with her talent, and add more to her already successful business. Lori finds conventions to be the very beneficial in

helping attain this goal, but only as long as they are useful learning tools. Lori prefers smaller, more intimate conventions and Jam sessions

and feels that they are very conducive to the creative stretching she desires.

Lori has become quite a staple to our little group and is very eager to see how the group will grow into itself in the future. I, for one, think the

group is better for having our own little bit of sunshine and am grateful that she decided to come check us out! Welcome to the group Lori!

If you‟ve been on Facebook and seen the announcement, spoken to me over the past couple of weeks or even read the

front page of this newsletter, then you know that we have changed our meeting venue for 2011. What you may not know is

why this was done or all of the specifics of this change. Well, I will attempt to explain everything to you here.

The need for the change of venue has stemmed from a couple of needs that we feel must be addressed in order to ensure

the future success of our group:

* Stairs: While Hoggy‟s provided a loft that suited our agenda perfectly, having to traverse those stairs with kit in tow

was not what many considered „fun”. This new venue will afford similar privacy and security but without the

need to traverse any long staircases. The entrance, the food, and the restrooms are all on the same level which

makes for a less strenuous jam.

* Faster and Healthier Food: The restaurant features buffet style dining. What this means is that you can go and get

your food without waiting for a server. What it also means is that, for those of us who desire healthier food options, is

a pretty awesome variety of foods to choose from AND a pretty nice salad bar. The up and down side is that it‟s all

you can eat! In my opinion, this is a better choice for our members from a dollars and cents standpoint as well.

* More paintable patrons. If you‟ve been to a Home Town Buffet, you‟ve no doubt noticed the plethora of little

diners there. This family focused restaurant is a huge draw for families and we can truly benefit from this as a group.

The specifics:

Meeting time: 5:00 pm until 8:30pm. The restaurant closes at 9:00pm. While this narrows our jamming window a bit, it forces

us to be very focused when it comes to our agenda and time management. The first meeting will be laid back (aka, lots of

eating and chatting) as we get the feel for the venue. I anticipate that for future meetings, eating will be done from 5-6 with

the majority of the rest of the evening dedicated to conducting our group/guild business and painting.

The Cost:

As with any buffet-style establishment, you have to pay to get in, we feel this is reasonable since we are being given a pri-

vate room and server for no additional cost.

All you can eat dinner: $9.99 (If you desire a drink it’s an additional $1.99 for the endless drink bar)**

Children’s Menu (prices include endless buffet and drink bar): Ages 4-7: $3.99 per child Ages 8-11: $5.99 per child**

** Management has asked that all members honor this pricing schedule. Since there’s no way to control who approaches the

buffet line once entry into the dining area is granted, no person can be allowed to attend the meetings without first purchasing

the buffet. Violation of this agreement will result in the groups eviction from the establishment and the possible loss of future

use of the venue for our jams. If you’re bringing a guest, please be prepared to pay for their entry upon arrival.

Our New Venue! The 4Our New Venue! The 4--11--1 on our new meeting place!1 on our new meeting place!

Our very own Amanda Destro of Amanda‟s Elaborate Eyes was featured during the Good Company Show on

Channel 3 (WKYC) on December 27th! When the station contacted Amanda about doing a segment on holiday

face painting, Amanda jumped at the chance to show off her face painting prowess to the Cleveland viewing audi-

ence. Amanda‟s interview was very informative and she provided a lot of good information not only about her busi-

ness but face painting in general (my favorite being that tidbit about how acrylics are not face paints and the impor-

tance of training). If you haven‟t seen the segment, log onto the WKYC website and check out the video of the in-

terview. I‟m sure that Amanda‟s short time in the spotlight will pay off exponentially! Couldn‟t have happened to a

nicer painter! Congrats Amanda!

The mission of the North East Ohio Face Painters group is comprised of several important objectives:

To provide a means for which area face painters can meet in a non-competitive environment that facilitates not only

professional and person growth, but camaraderie as well.

To bring awareness of professional face painters to N.E. Ohio. It is through this awareness that what we have to offer will

evolve from being a perceived value to a realized one.

To enable a better system of networking through awareness of other face painters in our area.

To uphold a standard of material safety and professional business practices.

And most importantly, to provide a way for painters to have FUN without worrying about line control, time constraints or

weird painting requests...okay...maybe not so much the weird requests.
