Looking into the Future….What will spring 2011 bring?

While Fall 2010 is not over yet, the department is already thinking about events for Spring Semester. As always, we will be offering fun activities in the halls planned for you by the Resident Advisors. Signature Events will also be planning events for you (see below). A very important date to save is February 7th-9th. This day will be for students to reserve their rooms for the 2011-2012 year.

Save the Date: February 7th-9th you will be reserving your rooms for 2011-2012 school year.

First and foremost thank you all for helping make Signature Events programs a success this year. MUDD Cup, Homecoming Decorating, and Free Cinema Movie nights were a great success and we will continue to do them. Signature Events will be bringing you the following in spring 2011

Best Room on Campus Open Halls – (For freshman to tour upperclassmen halls) Movie Nights Dance Party An several other fun activities

Keep an eye out for advertisements and have a wonderful

break!

Winter Break Housing What to do if you need to stay on campus during Winter break? Complete a Break Housing application.

These forms are available at the front desk of your residence halls, online, and at the Department of Housing and Residence Life.

Applications are due to Housing and Residence Life by Friday, December 10th at 5:00 pm.

The Twin Towers will stay open to accommodate those who need housing. If you currently live in one of the Towers, then you may request to stay in your permanent assignment. If you have a room that you would like to stay in, please indicate that on the form. Otherwise, a room will be assigned to you.

There is a $20.45 per day charge for a double room during the Winter Break.

The residence halls close Wednesday, December 15th at noon

They will reopen on Sunday, January 9th at 9:00 a.m.

If you have questions regarding break housing, please contact Tracey Eggleston or Sybil Lockard at 696-6765.

Office Hours

Show up at your profes-

sors office during office

hours. Many professors

office hours go unused by

students, which is sad

because they are such a

great resource of infor-

mation (they know what

will be on the test). The

professor will see your

dedication and in doing

so, it may even bump you

up a grade

Prioritize

Study and complete the

projects that will be worth

more of your grade first.

Make an ordered list of

things to study and pro-

jects to complete based on

time and importance.

Without having some

semblance of an agenda

planned, it will become

very easy for you to mis-

manage all of the study

time that you have availa-

ble to you. Know where

you currently stand grade

wise in your classes, so

you know how well you

will have to do on the

final to get the grade you

desire.

Don't Fall behind

If you are behind in re-

quired class readings, you

will have a lot of reading

to do come finals. Make

sure you learn the material

the first time it's taught, so

you don't have to go back

and review it. Sometimes,

if you pay good attention

in class, you can forgo

some of the required read-

ing.

Study Environ-

ment

You can accomplish much

more quality study time in

an academic like atmos-

phere than studying at

home. Cut out all distrac-

tions while brainstorming

to help maintain your train

of thought. Eliminating

noisy distractions and

working during the day

when you are more alert

Things to remember

when leaving for Win-

Page 5: December2010

THE HOLIDAYS ARE COMING!

Another semester has nearly come and gone. For all of us in Haymaker and Wellman hall, it is just a

matter of days until winter break. But for most of us, papers, exams, and other major projects for class

stand between us and a well-deserved break. Good luck with whatever assignments you have left for the

semester.

As finals approach, remember that we have free in-hall tutoring available in the evenings for you to use

should you need it. For times, please see the poster hung in the lobby or a talk to a staff member for more

information. 24-hour quiet hours will begin on December 7th at 9pm. There will also be snacks and food

provided for study breaks all day long on December 8th and 9th. Haymaker will have the snacks on the 8th

and Wellman on the 9th.

The halls will close for winter break at noon on Wednesday December 15th. Please prepare your room for

housing by following the guidelines given to you at the floor meeting in November and in the letter placed

in your mailbox. If you have any questions or are unsure about anything, don’t hesitate to ask your RA or

the RD for clarification. If for some reason you need housing during the break, please complete an

application for housing. These can be found at the front desk of any residence hall or at the main office of

the Department of Housing and Residence Life, which is adjacent to Holderby Hall.

As for RHA they will not be holding anymore meetings this semester. They will start back up again once

school resumes. Look for fliers about the first meeting for next semester. For more information about how

to get involved, ask any RHA officer or your RA. The Haymaker/Wellman staff would like to thank

them for a job well done this semester and look forward to seeing many more people getting involved next

semester to bring great things to the buildings.

From the entire staff of Haymaker and Wellman halls as well as the rest of the staff of the Department of

Housing and Residence Life wish you and yours a very happy holiday and a safe trip home. We look

forward to seeing you again in January!

residents. Nearly 100 residents attended the two-night event held in both buildings.

Year's end is neither an end nor a beginning but a going

on, with all the wisdom that experience can instill in us.

~Hal Borland

Can you believe it? The semester has come to a close

as all semesters do and the New Year is right around

the corner. It’s safe to say that WE DID IT! We made

it. This semester has presented its challenges, and we

have conquered them, one at a time.

I am so PROUD of each of you! I have seen the hard

work you have put in this semester: the late nights

study sessions, the papers you’ve printed at the front

desk, the looks of stress as you walk in from class. But

you got through it. And we had fun in the meantime! I

cannot thank you enough for your help in making

Holderby the best place to be. You have helped create

a community, a place people call home. Thank you!

Thank you for the smiles, the laughs, and the lessons.

You make a difference here, even if you don’t feel like

you do.

I am so excited for the Spring! It’s only going to get

better! We have so much exciting stuff in mind for next

semester; I can’t wait! Holderby was and remains

exactly where it’s at, and it will continue to be so next

semester. Have a safe holiday. I can’t wait to see you

all back next year!

Thank you, again, for being you!

Ginny

So many great memories were made this year!

The Semester is finally coming to an end! Twin Towers East welcomes you all back from Thanksgiv-ing break and we hope that the last few weeks here are not complete-ly crazy and stressful. We all know that fi-nals are just around the corner and this can be a very stressful time. Towers East as well as many of the other residence halls would like to give you all the opportunity to still enjoy your last few weeks here on campus before we head off for winter

break. Some relaxing and fun opportunities heading your way are Test preparation tips and get together with RA Lynnlee of the 13th floor, as well as a holiday movie night with RAs Abi and Meghan of the 11th and 9th floors. These

two programs will be happening on Tuesday November 30th. Look for signs for more in-formation about where to attend! Have a great couple weeks and look out for more opportunities for study breaks!

The Towers East Resident Advisors wish you the best of luck on your final exams and off you a few tips for the coming weeks.

Casey says to start studying now. Freshmen all too often wait until two days or even a day before an exam to study. If you start making outlines and notecards now, you will be better prepared.

Karen says meet with profes-sors or a tutor about any trouble you may be having understanding a concept.

Meghan says to get into study groups if discussing

concepts help you remember them better. Find the style of learning that best fits your own learning needs.

Britt says to make sure you get enough sleep. Eat your breakfast and watch what you eat as well. Eating lots of junk food will not give your brain the proper fuel. Make sure you eat some fruits and vegetables.

Quiet Hours Start on Dec 7th!

Tell Staff when you leave.

Empty Trash and Fridges. Unplug appliances.

Pull down Blinds and take valuables home..

Move items away from heaters.

Turn off heat/AC units.

Remove all trash and tidy your room.

Turn off Lights. Lock your door. ACE FINALS!
