TEMPLE BETH EMUNAH Kislev/Tevet December 2009 The Ritual Committee invites the community to a congregational forum concerning Bat Kohan and Bat Levi aliyot in our synagogue. This issue has been a hot topic of discussion of late in our own congregation and throughout the Conservative movement for more than 20 years. Rabbi Arye Berk will present the Teshuvot, the opinions of the Committee on Jewish Law and Standards of the Rabbinical Assembly. Our Shabbat dis- cussion will hope to shed light on such questions such as: What does Bat Kohan/Bat Levi aliyot mean? What do Rishon/Sheni aliyot mean? How do they differ from each other and from what we do now? What are the ramifications? What does it mean to be an egalitarian synagogue? Please join us at approximately 12:00 noon on Saturday December 12.

Hag Ha-Urim Samech! Have a Wonderful Festival of Lights

Shabbat candle lighting is at approximately 4:00 PM and that means we are living in darkness for alonger period of the day. The dark and cold of Kislev in our corner of the world can make even thehappiest of us a little glum. There is of course a solution to the blackness, light. Today we just needto turn on a switch and our homes are filled with light. We can even turn a knob and have a roaringgas fireplace to warm our homes, no messy ash or chopping wood needed. Judaism offers a solu-tion to the darkness of Kislev by commanding us to bring light into our homes and casting thatlight out into the streets for all to see. Hag Ha-Urim is approaching, the Festival of Lights, and Iwant us all to be ready for our cord free light show.

Our tradition is for us not to keep our Hanukiyahs (menorah) inside our house where no one cansee the beauty of our lit candles but to share the light of the candles with our neighbors by placingthe lights close to a window. In this manner we are all publicizing the miracle of Hanukah andbringing the simple light of our candles to the world. Why does Hanukah require each of us to be apublicist and exhibit our Hanukiyahs for our neighbors and passersby to see? I think it is becausethe miracle of Hanukah, and the oil that lasted for eight days, also proclaim to everyone that weJews will not meekly tolerate any curtailing of our religious freedoms, whether two thousand yearsago or today. Not only did one jar of pure Temple grade oil survive the desecration of our HolyTemple but a rather small band of Jews lead by the Maccabee family defeated a numerically supe-rior army.

Our candle light grows in intensity each night as we add another candle to our Hanikiyahs. Thesong “We Have Come to Cast Out Darkness” equates light with the individual and the community. Each of us, says the song, is a small light; and together we are a powerful light. Help us create astrong light for our synagogue community this year and join us each night as we light our verylarge Hanukiyah for all passersby to see.(see the schedule in the bulletin for times) For eight dayswe are all publicists and the only tools you need for your job are a window, a box of candles and amatch.

May the light of Hanukah brighten your homes and enter your hearts.

B’shalom,Rabbi Arye

From The Desk Of Fran Litner

Fall is coming quickly to a close. We are looking forward to Chanukah, a festival in our tradition that focuses on hope, dedication andmiracles.

Hebrew High is off to a great start. There are 44 teens enjoying the onsite classes and the offsite visits to Heights Crossing and Evelyn House. The religious school and high school will be collecting gifts for the children of Evelyn House (a homeless shelter in Stoughton) to make theirChristmas a happy one. If you would like to donate gifts (clothes, books, gift cards etc.) you can bring them to the school office.

We are in our second year of B’Nai Telem, a social and service learning program for B’Nai Mitzvah students. Telem means “moving to-gether” in Hebrew. Social action and tikkun olam are seen as integral parts of the B’Nai Mitzvah journey, but the volunteer component isoften an extra curricular activity. The students will visit Heights Crossing, visit Cradles to Crayons and learn what community organizationsare doing in the fight against hunger and homelessness, visit an animal shelter and visit Evelyn House, a homeless shelter in Stoughton.

The 5th graders will begin a project through the Brotherhood on making their own tefillin and learn about the wearing of tefillin which willculminate on Feb. 7th with the world wide wrap. We are enriching the program with a Ties that Bind series. Students will be learning aboutthe tying of knots and twisting of the challah.

Chanukah will be celebrated in the religious school on Tuesday, Dec.15th. The children will take part in a Chanukah fun day and eat latkes.Parents are welcome to join their children at 5:30 as they light the temple’s menorah on the front lawn.

I would like to wish a Mazel Tov to all the children who became B’Nai Mitzvah this past fall. You have made us all very proud. Also, MazelTov to their families. I stress the importance of doing Mitzvot along with becoming a B’Nai Mitzvah. On March 28th the students will bepresenting their individual mitzvot to the temple community.

We are preparing the materials for Torah Talk, a program for 6th grade students and their parents to learn about their Torah portion and how towrite a D’Var Torah.

Jen Antebi will be in the school on Sunday, Dec. 13th to sing Chanukah songs with the classes. Cindy Kaplan will be working with the fourthgrade students and their parents on an art project on Sunday, Dec. 20th. We are looking forward to view the finished projects.

Third through sixth graders are invited to Junior Congregation in the small chapel on Shabbat mornings from 10:30am to 12:00 and 7th gradersare required to attend Shabbat services in the main sanctuary at 9:30am to 12:00. Everyone is invited to stay for Kiddush.

The success of our school is due in large part to all of our staff members. We have an amazing team of teachers and family educators who Icould not do this without. It is my pleasure to be associated with such a talented and devoted group of individuals.

Have a Happy Chanukah, a wonderful relaxing winter break and a Happy New Year.

B’Shalom

New Families Welcomed at Shabbat Dinner and Service

The Welcome Dinner and Service on October 23 was a huge success. So manypeople came to honor our New Members and Rabbi Arye and the Berk family that wehad to use the large social hall. Robin Ekpunobi, Membership Chairman, introducedeach new family and presented a Welcome Gift to them. President Bob Fishmanextended greetings to all present. After Rabbi Arye's D'var Torah, he and his familyled us in the Shabbat dinner blessings. Our chef-extraordinaire Danny Goldstein, withhis cooks and servers, delivered a sumptuous traditional Shabbat meal from soup todessert to over 140 people.

Rabbi Arye, Stan Marcus, Steven Cohen and Ellen Jacobs led our Shabbat servicewith spirit. Rabbi Werb expressed his words of welcome to our new members beforehe led Kiddush. Our New Member families also led parts of our service. TheRotunda was overflowing with people as we prayed and sang together. A festiveOneg Shabbat followed.

Many, many thanks go to those who helped make this Shabbat evening so special.Robin Ekpunobi and Marilyn Geller Co-Chaired this event. Thanks to everyone whocame to welcome our new families and our Rabbi, to all who served on thecommittee, and to those who came forward to help serve, decorate, clean up, partici-pate, and sponsor this year’s Welcome Dinner and Service.

The Membership Committee has worked very hard this year to connect with everyonein our congregation, both new and long time, and looks forward to another great yearfor Temple Beth Emunah.

Hachnasat Orchim Fund

Temple Beth Emunah is pleased to announce a new initiative,Hachnasat Orchim, the welcoming of guests. The welcoming ofguests, particularly at Shabbat, is a mitzvah, as we are taught byAbraham’s kindness to the angels. At each Shabbat dinner function sponsored by the Temple, three families will be randomly selected from the membershipand privately invited as guests of the Temple for that dinner. The inspiration behind this effort is to reach out beyond theusual boundaries of registration and reservation to welcomemembers of our community into our midst.

There will be no mention of who is a sponsored guest. We are all family and communitytogether, and no one should be pointed out and made to feel different. If you would like to make a donation to the Temple to sponsor families for the HachnasatOrchim fund, please note that with your donation, or speak to Temple Administrator DebKirsch.
