The benefits of Thai Massage.

Thai massage has many benefits for the individual. It uses the deep pressure technique on energy lines and the yoga- like stretching to relax the whole body on a deeper level.

The different poses in Thai massage force fresh circulation on specific areas and opens up muscles, relieves pain from sore and tight muscles. It helps with lymphatic drainage

and the return of blood to the heart and digestion.

Authentic Thai massage by experienced therapists

For pure, healthy relaxation. Fix muscle, back & neck problems, as well as sport injuries.

Summers were made for tall, flirty, fruity cocktails, preferably with festive

garnishing and a killer view. Discover your favourite sip-perfect indulgence with waves crashing at your back or the sun setting over the Buffalo or Nahoon Rivers. We recommend Café Neo and Bora Bora on the Esplanade, Barcode at Xtreme Valley, Catz Pub in Berea, The Highlander at the Blue Lagoon Hotel and the Y-Knot Pub and Restaurant at the Premier Hotel Regent. If beer is more to your taste, be sure to sample the finest craft beers at Emerald Vale Brewing Company, where you can seduce your palate with a variety of ales, including pale, gold, amber and dark ale.

Shop ‘til you drop! From big-name retailers to unique niche boutiques, East London’s modern and easily accessible shopping centres and retail parks is just what the retain therapy doctor ordered. Find fabulous deals and all the hottest, must-have brands at Vincent Park Shopping Centre, Beacon Bay Retail Park, Beacon Bay Crossing, Hemingways and Mdantsane Malls, Metlife Mall and Stone Towers in King William’s Town.

Treat yourself to a high-stakes night out on the town at the always-elegant and glitzy Hemingways Casino, or the flashy, fun-tasticGalaxy Bingo in King’s Mall and Casino Royale in the CBD. Play your favourite slot machines, spin the roulette wheel or try your luck at the blackjack table for an evening of Vegas-styled fun. Just remember that winners know when to stop.

Get funky with some live music. East London has always had a vibrant music scene and there’s no better time to catch a live performance than during the sizzling summer months. Visit the Guild Theatre and The Venue at Hemingways for an exciting and eclectic line-up throughout the summer. Not-to-be-missed live performances this December include Bobby van Jaarsveld, Karlien van Jaarsveld and Centrestage’s Neil Diamond tribute at the Guild, Kurt Darren at The Venue, Johnny Clegg at Old Selbornian Club and the 7th annual Buyel’ekhaya Pan African Music Festival at Buffalo Park. Also check our events calendar for the live shows at Areena Riverside Resort, Tea in the Trees, Legends The C Club in Chintsa. Enjoy the mellow sounds of the hottest local and visiting jazz acts at the Velvet Jazz Lounge at Latimer’s Landing and Imbizo Jazz Lounge

Time out on the water. For relaxing river and sea cruises, sundowner cruises or just a braai on a barge with family and friends ... contact these guys. River and sea cruises: Southern Cross 082 938 6275, Belinda 082 755 3661 and Nahoon river barge trips: On the Rocks: Russell 082 443 4166

Stuff yourself! December holidays were designed largely around eating, so enjoy everything from pub grub to the finest gourmet dining at East London’s many fun, festive, family-friendly and foodie-first restaurants and eateries. See our extensive Restaurant and Coffee shop section on pages 51 to 57 for more info and contact numbers.

LIFE on the

Ocean breezes, a working harbour with ships and cranes to delight the kids,

great fish and chips next to the river or a fresh Cape salmon to take home for the pan – what’s not to like? Buffalo River has a myriad of activities to keep the whole family entertained.

Relax with some quayside refreshments or a lunch, take to the water on a cruise or if you’re the more energetic type, try your hand at rowing or learning how to sail. It’s all there for the taking on both the east and west banks.

Here’s a roundup of life on the Buffalo River and what’s on offer:

Locals may be surprised to read about the burgeoning hub of activity on the Buffalo River but it’s true, Buffalo River has a new lease on life and the revamp of Latimer’s Landing has started. Make the most of spring this month and take some time to explore the leisure offerings around our river port – you won’t be disappointed.

Food and drinks with a view

Sea Spirit Fish MarketThe brainchild of Mark and Cammy McArthur, this little gem is your one-stop-shop for fresh line fish, frozen shellfish and a variety of frozen fish. There’s a little takeaway selling a range of light meals (fish and chips is a paltry R35) and if you time it right, you can watch the highly skilled crew members scale, debone, butterfly or fillet their catch once the boats are in. A bonus is the sms messages sent out to their growing database of customers as the boats dock with a list of the catch. They welcome customers to bring some wine or a six-pack and enjoy the river views while eating takeaways and take in the atmosphere.

Contact Cammy on 082 498 2848 or the landline 043-722 7146.

Riverine adventures

Footprints CafeWith a good all-round menu (including kiddies and vegetarians), Footprints Café is a great place for lunches, drinks, sundowners and party events. There’s a full bar, conferencing venue and staff are helpful under the watchful eye of Brian Heathcote.

Contact Footprints Café on 043-722 0056, 083 984 6379 or [email protected]

The Velvet Jazz Lounge

This classy venue with its wide deck overlooking the river is aptly named with its trendy décor, cool sounds and atmospheric setting.

There’s a resident DJ – the Jazz master – to keep you entertained no matter whether it’s a relaxing drink after a long hard week or that special birthday party or event you’ve planned for months. Look out for their monthly over 30s parties as well.

Facilities include a seating capacity of 180 or 300 (auditorium style), a great sound system and a full bar, explained Denash Gonda.

Contact them on 043-722 1076, Denash on 082 601 2995 or Alfredo on 084 729 8162 or follow them on Facebook.

Leander Rowing ClubIf doubles, quads, octals and sculls are your thing then head across the Buffalo River and get yourself to the rowing community centred around the Leander Rowing Club on the west bank. Three clubs (two schools and Leander) share the

facility explains club President Dave Hartwanger with an umbrella body managing the interest of all three bodies.

Home to the Buffalo (the 128th was held in February this year) and the Selborne (56th in 2015) Regattas, the clubhouse boasts spectacular river views and punters can enjoy

Page 44: December what's on e edition

the call of resident Fish Eagles when enjoying a post rowing drink on the club’s expansive deck.

For the past year the Club have been developing what they call a Novice Programme to cater for those who want to try their hand at the sport over a 10-week course. If it’s not for you, one can walk away but if the bug bites – then one can consider joining the club with a number of membership options available.

“We wanted to create a standard and structured programme to introduce people to rowing which consists of a single two-hour session per week,” says Dave.

Three training boats are available with a larger vessel for rowing in groups nearing completion as “people want to row in groups, they feel safer and more secure,” added Dave.

The initiative, which Dave describes as a work in progress, is an innovative way of catering for people who are intimidated by high-end elite racing craft, people who just want to enjoy getting out on the water.

“It’s a way of cultivating a more social side to the sport,” says Dave.

Interested in trying your hand, joining the club or hiring the venue: Contact Leander Rowing Club through Dave (076 733 6480), the Club Captain, Kurt van Aardt (071 604 5069) or [email protected] or on the Web http://lean606.wix.com/leander

Contact Pixie on 083 373 3919 or Jenny Muller for hiring enquiries on 082 896 6433.

The What’s On

WAY OUT IN INDIA ~ Travels in a Curious Land.

Meryl Urson – Porcupine Press.

‘Way Out In India’ is the per-fect holiday read for the arm-chair traveller who secretly dreams of exploring India. Meryl Urson is a South Afri-can yoga teacher whose half a dozen trips through India have taken her from ancient palaces to crowded cities; sometimes in hair-raising modes of transport, on dubi-ous roads.

Urson’s book is a very per-sonal travel journal written by a realist who has an eye for detail; a quirky sense of humour; and a love of Indian food.

The author takes us from Pune and the hazards of studying with the ill-tempered Iyen-gar; to the beaches of Goa; through rice-paddies and vil-lages, to the haunting beauty of the distant Himalayas. Her descriptions of India’s crum-bling architecture and monu-ments are tempered by her affection for an immensely colourful and diverse country and its people.

More disturbing are her ex-periences at Varanasi in a smoky surreal landscape of funeral pyres, foraging feral dogs, and the alarmingly pol-luted sacred River Ganges.

Meryl Urson’s journeys are not a spiritual quest, but show a balanced view of Hindu cul-ture viewed through a Jewish lens. For all its beauty, ener-gy and dazzling colour, India is not for the faint-hearted.

15 Dec. What the EFF? at the Guild Theatre from 7.30pm. It’s hard to live in South Africa for more than five minutes without looking around in wide-eyed bewilderment, and asking: “What the EFF?”. Whether it’s hippies rubbing their chords together to produce solar energy, militants marching into parliament in Pep Store overalls and Italian shoes, or taxi drivers who manage to simultaneously cut you off and flip you the bird while paging through the newspaper and counting their money… at some point in every day, you will say: “What the EFF?”. Fortunately, Nik Rabinowitz is here to answer that question. Or maybe not answer it, so much as shake it a bit, and see what falls out. From the leafy green ganglands of Constantia to the imaginary book-storage lockers of Limpopo, Rabinowitz casts his eye far and wide, and muses: “What the EFF?” And if politics isn’t your cup of tea, there’s plenty of other ridiculousness that’ll have you shaking your head, and clutching your sides. Tickets at R150 available from Computicket. Contact the theatre on 043 743 0704.

18 Dec. Centrestage: Neil Diamond Jazz Singer Returns at the Guild Theatre from 7.30pm. Centrestage makes a welcome return as we say `Hello Again’ to a return season of the enormously popular tribute to Neil Diamond. Fronted once more by the velvet voiced Andre Strydom as the Jazz Singer, the Centrestage All-Star Band will succeed in triumphantly combining the worlds of Las Vegas with that rock, to provide a night steeped in sentimentality as the familiar Neil Diamond hits are given the Centrestage Treatment.
