Transcript of DECEMBER VOLUME ISSUE ENTRAL OHIO CHAPTER
CENTRAL OHIO CHAPTER OF THE
AMERICAN CONCRETE INSTITUTE
Hello ACI Central Ohio Chapter Members, Due to the holidays, there was no meeting in December. Our next meeting will be held on January 16, 2014. Mark Luther of Holcim will be discussing the new portland cement plant in Ste. Genevieve County, Missouri. This meeting will be at a new location, Hyatt Place at Grandview Yard, at 795 Yard Street. Additional details of the meeting are provided on Page 2 of this newsletter. In February, we will have a representative of ACI National in town to speak about changes in the upcoming new version of ACI 318 – Building Code Requirements for Structural Concrete. The March meeting will cover one of the Ohio River dam construction projects and in April, Ken Hover will be giving a presentation on a yet-to-be-determined topic. Our last dinner meeting of the season, in May, will have Rick Yelton of Hanley Wood & Concrete Construction magazine discussing new technologies in concrete. On pages 3 and 4 of this newsletter, Tom Rozsits of Ohio Concrete has provided some information about ACI-Certified Flatwork Finishers and Flatwork Technicians and the shortage of certified finishers and technicians in Ohio. He includes information on the requirements to become certified and local resources for doing so. Members can submit content for future newsletters through our website (www.acicoc.org). This information may include news or photographs about ACI-COC members, member’s companies, construction projects, or other articles about Central Ohio concrete construction. Members are also always welcome to make suggestions for future meeting topics. Please make sure you have paid your yearly dues. This can be done throughon-line payment at our website or by sending a check to Dave Holtzapple. Registration and payment for upcoming meetings can also be done through the website.

THE 'STE GENEVIEVE' CEMENT PLANT
On July 4th, 2009, the world's largest single-kiln portland cement plant opened. Known as the Ste Genevieve plant, it is located along the Mississippi River an hour south of St Louis. This presentation presents the motives leading into the plant development, shows its location and lay-out, and describes the several unique features (e.g. everything after the quarry is under roof) about the plant.
The meeting will also feature live music, compliments of the speaker. The Vatra Živa Tamburitza Band will be performing during dinner. Vatra Živa has been preserving and sharing the music of Eastern Europe in the traditional string band tradition of Serbia and Croatia. Vatra Živa’s mission is to keep alive the older, traditional folk tunes, while expanding their musical repertoire.

SPECIFY CERTIFIED ACI FLATWORK FINISHERS & EVERYONE BENEFITS
The American Concrete Institute (ACI) began the Concrete Flatwork Finisher/Technician certification
program in 1987. The program was designed to provide a basis for certifying concrete finishers and to
improve the quality of concrete construction. Today, ACI lists more than 4,000 certified Concrete Flatwork
Finishers and 5,200 Concrete Flatwork Technicians on their website worldwide. According to ACI, Ohio has
only 178 certified Concrete Flatwork Finishers and 197 Concrete Flatwork Technicians --- there's a strong
need for more in Ohio!
Certified Finishers Required NOW!
More and more major retailers specify that
contractors have ACI-certified flatwork finishers
onsite performing the work. ACI Committee 301
(Specifications for Concrete) took a major step
toward formally recognizing the value of using ACI-
certified finishers and technicians when, in 2002,
they passed language that states in part, "...Unless
otherwise permitted, a minimum of one finisher or
finishing supervisor shall be a certified ACI
Flatwork Finisher Technician or a certified Flatwork
Technician defined in ACI CP-10 or equivalent."
This was the first time ACI Committee 301 had
prepared and forwarded a revision with language
requiring the use of qualified flatwork finishers for
concrete placement.
ARCOM, a partner of the American Institute of Architects, also includes optional language in their
MASTERSPEC® Specification System, requiring that cast-in-place concrete installers be ACI-Certified
Flatwork Finishers and Technicians, and that installer supervisors be ACI Certified Flatwork Technicians.
To meet these specifications, contractors will need to hire certified finishers or hire and train finishers and get
them certified.

HOW TO BECOME A CERTIFIED ACI FLATWORK FINISHER ACI grants a Concrete Flatwork Finisher/Technician certification to an examinee that meets the following requirements:
A passing grade of 70% on the written examination
Plus ONE of the following:
1,500 hours of actual on-the-job finishing experience (approximately one year of regular full-time work) & successful completion of the performance examination
-OR-
4,500 hours of actual on-the-job finishing experience (approximately three years of regular full-time work)
Individuals without the necessary work experience may still become certified as an ACI Concrete Flatwork Technician by passing the written exam alone. The written and performance examinations are derived from ACI publication CCS-1(10), Slabs-on-Ground, Third Edition. The Craftsman Workbook (CP-10) is used for classroom training and exam preparation. The exams require knowledge of:
Planning and preparing for SOG placement, Concrete materials and mixture proportioning, and control tests, Floor flatness and levelness, Placing equipment and proper use of placing and finishing tools, Placing, finishing, and jointing, and Curing and protection.
Recertification is required every five years and requires successful completion of a written examination.
Finding Training Classes and Examinations
Classes and examinations are available through ACI's network of Local Sponsoring Groups including Ohio Concrete's local Chapter coverage. The next scheduled course/exam is on February 4-5, 2014 in Columbus, Ohio. Contact Ohio Concrete directly at 614-891-0210 or visit www.ohioconcrete.org to register. The program includes the ACI Craftsman Workbook CP-10 (10), classroom instruction, and the written examination.
New Finisher Certification Programs
The ACI Craftsman Certification Programs now also offers specialty finisher certifications. A Specialty Commercial/Industrial Concrete Flatwork Finisher is a person who has demonstrated a basic knowledge of finishing procedures for Specialty Commercial/Industrial Concrete Flatwork Finishing, including high tolerance floor construction, application of surface treatments, and silica fume concrete, and who has demonstrated skill in operating mechanized finishing equipment. A Specialty Commercial/Industrial Concrete Flatwork Technician is a person who has the same qualifications listed above, but who lacks sufficient work experience and verified skills needed to qualify as a Specialty Commercial/Industrial Concrete Flatwork Finisher. Contact Ohio Concrete for further information on this Specialty Commercial/Industrial Concrete Flatwork certification.

A large portion of the chapter’s funding comes from payment we receive for each participant in our geographic area that goes through concrete field and laboratory certifications. This arrangement was made with the intention that our members would assist with the certifications by proctoring the performance testing. Our chapter offers a waiver for the cost of one meeting for each time you volunteer to help. Emails are typically sent out by Ohio Concrete asking for volunteers, so please consider volunteering your time by responding to the emails or by contacting Tom Rozsits at Ohio Concrete at 614-891-0210.
