WELLNESS PAYS OFF • • • The calendar hasn’t yet turned to 2017, but we’re already into the third month of the 2017 wellness program. Remember that the 2016 program was open for just half a year…the 2017 program has a full 12-month timeframe for earning wellness points, which means the point goals have doubled, too. To earn the full $750 reward—to be deposited into your 2018 health reimbursement account or health savings account to help cover your medical expenses in 2018—you’ll need to collect 1,000 points in the 2017 program. The key to success with this program is making the effort by taking part in wellness and preventive screenings, joining fitness challenges or signing up for a health management program. Sign up or learn more by visiting mywellness.eCommunity.com.

Those hired on or after September 26 are not required to participate in the 2016 performance appraisal process and will not receive a performance appraisal form. Leader performance appraisal forms, meanwhile, will be available January 16. If you have questions, check the quick reference guides located by clicking on the Performance Appraisal icon on InComm. For technical questions please contact the service desk at 317-355-5658.

POLICE ROLL CALL VISITS COMMUNITY PAVILION • • • Improving safety and security continues to be a priority at our hospitals and ambulatory sites. It’s the reason why the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department recently visited Community Health Pavilion East to conduct a “rolling roll call.” A dozen and a half officers were on hand for the roll call event, hosted by the residency program that’s located at the pavilion. The

officers have been visiting the pavilion regularly to enhance security, particularly following the October carjacking incident there.

JOE KESSLER HONORED BY THE IBJ • • • Joe Kessler, community’s chief financial and administration officer, recently was honored by the Indianapolis Business Journal as part of its CFO of the Year Awards program. His nomination recognized his innovative approach toward keeping the best interests of patients in mind while ensuring Community’s strong fiscal health and effective administrative operations. Please click on the link below to read his profile in the publication’s CFO of the Year special section.

MORE ACCOLADES FROM THE NURSING EXCELLENCE EVENT • • • Last month we profiled the winners of this year’s Nursing Excellence Awards in the program’s five categories. They were honored at the annual awards banquet in November. Every year there are additional awards announced at the event. This year’s event spotlighted the Friend of Nursing Award winner—Travis Lozier, vice president of performance excellence—as well as Lifetime Achievement Award winner Julie Painter, clinical nurse specialist.

GREATER ACCESS MEANS BETTER SERVICE • • • Community continues to build more convenient access to boost service and improve outcomes. In October, Community Quick Care opened at 96th Street and Masters Road. The new practice provides expanded access to primary care, offering timely acute care visits with an advanced practice provider when a patient’s primary care physician is not available. It’s an appointment-based service designed to serve established patients rather than the general public, and is open weekdays from 11 to 7 and weekends from 9 to 1. Meanwhile, a new Community Physician Network Family Care practice officially opened last month at 3850 South Emerson Avenue in Beech Grove. The new primary care practice is staffed by board-certified nurse practitioners, who will take care of urgent needs and address and manage chronic diseases.

HELPING DREAMS BECOME REALITY • • • Kim Bryant, a stage 4 breast cancer patient at Community Anderson, has always wanted to travel to Tennessee to the music capital of Nashville to see the Grand Ole Opry. Her breast cancer navigator, Jill Hensley, R.N., set out to help her dream come true, by contacting the Dream Foundation and putting in a nomination. The foundation and sponsor Genentech agreed to fly her to Nashville with her two children and grandson. The travelers will visit the Grand Ole Opry for a show—complete with backstage passes. Their dream package even includes gas cards and extra spending money.

A MESSAGE FROM THE OFFICE OF PATIENT EXPERIENCE • • • The theme of Community’s first-ever All-Team Experience was Connect, and connecting is a key to creating exceptional experiences. Connecting with patients is what we do, and a large part of that involves how we communicate with them. The ways we communicate and connect with our patients has the potential to improve the experiences and outcomes our patients have. Through patient-focused studio

activities before the All-Team Experience event, as well as the studio experience at the close of the event, those in attendance were given the opportunity to reflect on how we connect with our patients in a meaningful way, and write down their thoughts. As 2017 unfolds, we’ll continue to ponder how we connect with empathy, connect by listening, and connect with a smile…and those reflections shared at the All-Team Experience are providing fantastic food for thought. It’s quite amazing to see this vast collection of our thoughts on the ways we connect, thousands of ideas all telling one story: the story of how caregivers are making a difference in our patients’ lives 365 days a year.

SERVICE PILLAR GOALS FOR 2016

We will achieve at least 1% improvement over our baseline scores in multiple

service measures, including how likely it is that patients

would recommend our hospitals and ambulatory

facilities, as well as how they rate our providers and our emergency departments.

ALMOST TIME FOR AN EPIC TRANSITION

In February, all locations and providers associated with the

Howard region will transition from Cerner to Epic Systems

applications. This will gain efficiencies and be a huge

benefit for seamless patient care. Training for Epic started

last month and will continue through January 25, using 10

computer labs across six Howard region locations. More

than 400 classroom training opportunities are available for

those impacted by the change. Also, to make sure that the

transition to Epic goes as smoothly as possible, there will

be resources available onsite beginning February 1 for go-

live support. To learn more about training, click on the email

link below or call 765-864-8888.

COMMUNITY SOUTH RECEIVES BARIATRIC

COMPREHENSIVE CENTER ACCREDITATION

The bariatric surgical center at Community South has

been accredited as a Comprehensive Center under the

Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality

Improvement Program, run by the American College of

Surgeons and the American Society for Metabolic and

Bariatric Surgery. The standards ensure that bariatric surgical patients benefit from a multidisciplinary program, not just

a surgical procedure, which improves patient outcomes and long-term success.

QUALITY PILLAR GOALS FOR 2016

We’re seeking at least 1% improvement over baseline

in our “harm score,” with a target of 1.693 or better, and in readmissions, with

a target of 12.12% or better. We’re also tracking

five measures of ambulatory quality.

CLEANER CLAIMS, FASTER PAYMENTS, HAPPIER PATIENTS • • • For most patients, the whole process of medical billing

and insurance claims management is a big and complicated mystery, one that can last for weeks or months after care is

delivered. Community is making great strides toward streamlining the process in a way that’s good for our organization and

for patients alike. Earlier this fall, as we upgraded to new versions of Epic Systems applications, hospital billing brought online

a new claims management solution called Availity, which is the same system our professional billing operations use. The result

will be higher productivity and more successful claims. It means we’ll be reimbursed faster, patients will get their explanation

of benefits forms more quickly, and there will likely be fewer insurance denials that cause hassles for patients and Community

alike. And once we’re able to

bring Community Anderson

and Community Howard

onto the system in 2017,

productivity gains will be even

greater, with savings of half a

million dollars possible. This

implementation would not

have been possible without

tremendous collaboration

between our new strategic

partner, Availity; Community

CareConnect team members;

and Community’s hospital

billing business offices of SBO,

VEI and Home Health.

7.0%, and will also achieve a “days cash on hand”

target of at least 164.

OPENING SOON: COMMUNITY HEALTH PAVILION ANDERSON We’re less than a month away from the opening of the brand-new Community Health Pavilion Anderson, a three-story, 68,000-square-foot facility packed with convenient Community services. Tenants will start moving in next month, several of them relocating from other Anderson addresses to improve access and enhance services. Scheduled to open first, on January 3, is a Community MedCheck clinic. On the 16th, Community Physician Network Family Medicine, Community Physical Therapy & Rehab, and laboratory services open their doors. A week later, Community Behavioral Health joins the roster. And on the 30th, a timeshare office and the community room are ready for the public. The new facility is at 32nd Street and Scatterfield Road in Anderson.

SHELBOURNE KNEE CENTER MOVING TO COMMUNITY EAST • • • Upon joining the Community family, the Shelbourne Knee Center brought its world-renowned total knee care to the West campus. Now, as Community Westview winds down its operations this month, K. Donald Shelbourne, M.D., and Rodney Benner, M.D., are making the move to Community East. Current plans include renovating existing space on the fifth floor so that it’ll be move-in ready by the end of the first quarter of 2017. Dr. Shelbourne began his orthopedic practice in 1982, and Shelbourne Knee Center has a strong focus on research, tracking outcomes of surgical and non-surgical patients. He has performed more than 6,000 ACL reconstruction surgeries and more

than 8,000 knee arthroscopies, and is best known for establishing the Accelerated ACL Reconstruction Rehabilitation Protocol. Dr. Benner has a long history with the Shelbourne Knee Center, starting there in the research department while a medical student. Dr. Benner specializes in knee replacement, knee arthroscopy, knee ligament reconstruction and complex revision knee replacement.

INTERVENTIONAL RADIOLOGY PHYSICIANS CERTIFIED BY MD ANDERSON PHYSICIANS NETWORK® • • • Community is breaking new ground with the MD Anderson Physicians Network, by jointly developing a new certification entity, interventional radiology. MD Anderson Physicians Network launched the new certification with four Community-affiliated doctors. Now certified are Karen O. Ehrman, M.D.; Bryan C. Hankins, M.D.; Scott J. Savader, M.D.; and Joseph W. Yedlicka, Jr., M.D.

BILLBOARD BABIES • • • Driving around Indianapolis, you may have spotted new Community billboards. They’re part of a recently launched campaign spotlighting maternity services. Community is a leader in the baby business, and in fact, Community North has for two years delivered more babies than any other Indiana hospital. The new campaign aims to build upon our maternity strengths across Community.

ANOTHER SEVEN-FIGURE GIFT SUPPORTING OUR PATIENTS Community Health Network Foundation has received a $1 million cash donation from Rama Drive Realty, a group of managing partners and investors that owns and operates several properties in Indianapolis. Half of the gift will support Community’s existing Oncology Patient Assistance Fund, while the remaining $500,000 will be dedicated to establishing and endowing the East Region Patient Assistance Fund to provide financial assistance for patients

receiving care in Community’s East region. The contribution honors lead managing partner Lewis Norry’s parents, Sharon and Neil Norry, as well as Rama Drive Realty’s former employee William “Bill” Spurlock, who helped to manage maintenance operations at several properties on the east side of Indianapolis. Spurlock lived a life dedicated to helping others and also overcame alcoholism, maintaining sobriety for the last 13 years of his life through hard work and perseverance, before passing away in 2012 from cancer. With this in mind, Rama Drive Realty’s donation will be recognized at the new Community Cancer Center North in the form of the Sharon and Neil Norry Healing Garden, and at the new Community East by naming the facility housing the centralized support service The Bill Spurlock Support Services Hub.

THERE’S STILL TIME TO SUPPORT UNITED WAY • • • Community is traditionally one of the biggest supporters of United Way of Central Indiana—and if you’ve not supported United Way before but agree to provide at least a dollar a week, Community will match your gift! There are also match opportunities to help amplify new or increased pledges from leaders. Meanwhile, Community Anderson’s campaign benefits United Way of Madison County, and Community Howard is a major backer of United Way of Howard County. Click on the link below to donate to United Way of Central Indiana. User ID is your last name plus Community employee ID. Password is commuw16.

PARTNERING TO HELP HOOSIERS BE HEALTHIER • • • We support our communities in many ways, including by advocating on behalf of better health. That’s why our president and CEO, Bryan Mills, has joined with a number of partners from healthcare and the business community—including the Indiana Hospital Association, the Indiana State Medical Association and the Indiana Chamber of Commerce—to create a new organization known as the Alliance for a Healthier Indiana. The group recently announced plans to tackle its first challenge: the high rate of tobacco use in our state. The alliance is asking Indiana’s state legislature to consider a variety of measures, including higher tobacco taxes, an increase in the smoking age and a repeal of the smokers’ bill of rights. The new Alliance for a Healthier Indiana is a great example of how we at Community partner with others to further our work. From food insecurity to educational challenges to suicide to smoking and other addictions, we’re committed to tackling societal issues that affect health and quality of life.

COMMUNITY PILLAR GOAL FOR 2016

Our expectation is that all Community leaders

will take part in at least one Serve360° volunteer

opportunity during 2016.

HOLIDAY GIFTS THAT GIVE BACK • • • During this season of giving and gratitude, consider holiday gifts that give back to Community’s patients. Stop by one of Community’s FigLeaf Boutique locations and purchase The Giving Gig bracelet or scarf, offered by Windsor Jewelry and Day Furs. All proceeds from the sale of these items, which can be purchased through payroll deduction, will benefit Community’s cancer patients in financial need. Looking for a fun-filled family experience? Buy tickets to Indy Fuel’s February 24 game against the Fort Wayne Komets. Called The Giving Game, all proceeds will also benefit Community’s cancer patients in need—click on the special link below to purchase tickets. For an inspirational read, consider purchasing “Beyond Words” from IBJ Publishing, the true story of a Community brain cancer patient and her husband, in their journey to battle the disease while bringing hope and helpful insights to others along the way. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of this book will benefit the Community Health Network Foundation and, in turn, the individuals we serve across communities in central Indiana.

ANOTHER BANNER YEAR AT THE HEART WALK • • • Final numbers are in for the 2016 Indy Heart Walk, and the total raised by Community Health Network was $83,154, including our Heart Walk sponsorship with the American Heart Association. As the largest fundraiser and team, with 783 walkers, Community will be recognized by the AHA as a Circle of Excellence partner through 2017. Please be sure to check out the thank you banner from AHA that is visiting hospitals and several ambulatory locations throughout the next couple of months to

honor our Heart Walk site leaders, team captains, walkers, donors and committee members for their support in the fight against cardiovascular disease in Indiana.

TOSS A TEDDY BEAR ONTO THE FUEL’S HOME ICE • • • Our partnership with the Indy Fuel takes a lot of forms—from our logo across the team’s home ice, to the care we provide for the athletes, to our support of the Fuel Tank at Fishers public skating activities, to the ongoing support the team gives back to our patients. On that last note, consider being part of Indy Fuel Teddy Bear Toss Night! You’ll have the chance to toss new or gently used stuffed animals onto the ice following the Fuel’s first goal of the night. And as a Community team member, you get a special discounted ticket…it’s just $10, and half of that is donated back to Community Health Network Foundation. The event is Saturday evening, December 17, at the Indiana Farmers Coliseum (home of last month’s All-Team Experience…thanks again to the Fuel for helping us find a great location for our event!). Click on the link below to get your tickets.
