PAGE TWO
From the Pastor’s Desk
My message on this first weekend after Christmas Day is the same every year: Christmas is not over! I think it’s sad that our secular culture starts closing the door on Christmas celebrations on Dec.
26th (e.g., radio stations that play Christmas music throughout November and December stop doing so on
Dec. 26th, right as the Christmas season is just beginning). So, I always like to remind everyone that this is
now the joyous season that we were preparing for during Advent. This is the time to rejoice that, in this
difficult year of 2020, the Light of Christ is still present in our world, and that our Lord is Emmanuel, which
means God-with-us.
So, liturgically speaking, the Christmas season lasts until the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord, which will fall
on Sunday, Jan. 10th. But right now, we also celebrate the Christmas Octave. You see, the mystery of Jesus’
Incarnation at Christmas is so important that we celebrate Christmas Day as an Octave, an eight-day
celebration (each day this week is considered to be an extension of Christmas Day). We also do this with
Easter Sunday.
During this Christmas Octave we celebrate the Feast of the Holy Family (Jesus, Mary, and Joseph) this
weekend. We then conclude the Octave with the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God on Jan. 1st, when we
honor Mary’s motherhood. This Solemnity is normally a Holy Day of Obligation, but the Cardinal’s
dispensation from attending Mass in-person is still in effect. However, we will still have two in-person
Masses for this Solemnity (we should not need more than two, based on previous years’ attendance for this
feast day). Masses for Mary, Mother of God will be at 4:30pm on Dec. 31st, and 10:30am on Jan. 1st.
Registration for these Masses will close on Dec. 30th at 2:00pm.
We then continue the Christmas celebration with the Solemnity of the Epiphany on Jan. 3rd, and (as I said)
the Baptism of the Lord on Jan. 10th. I hope that you can join us for some or all of these great Christmas
liturgies.
And before we say goodbye to 2020 (which I’m sure everyone wants to do!) and say hello to 2021, don’t
forget that now is the best time to buy our parish’s Hypod raffle tickets. You can buy Hypod tickets anytime
throughout the year, but it makes the most sense to buy them now, before the first raffle drawing on Jan. 4th,
because that will give you the most chances to win.
Hypod tickets are $10 each, and there is a drawing every Monday for a $100 prize, and a $500 prize on the
last Monday of each month. And even if your ticket wins, it goes back in the pot for the next week’s drawing,
which gives you multiple chances to win with one ticket (but obviously, the more tickets you buy, the more
chances you have to win). So, if you buy your tickets before the first drawing on Jan. 4th, you will get the full
52 chances to win a cash prize with each ticket. Hypod tickets can be purchased at the rectory, or they are
also available at the back of church. Simply fill out the stubs, attach your payment to them, and drop them in
the Sunday collection or at the rectory.
Finally, I would like to express my profound gratitude to those of you who sent me Christmas cards and gifts.
It is difficult to try to thank everyone personally (I’m still working on late Christmas cards!), so please know
how much I appreciate your thoughtfulness and generosity.
St. Beatrice & St. Maria Goretti, pray for us. Have a Blessed New Year! May God bless you.
Fr. Rob

PAGE THREE Holy Family:
Today is the feast of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph.
During our New Year, may our families “grow in wisdom and have
the favor of God upon them.”
This month, through your gifts, the society of St. Vincent de Paul was able to bring Christmas to the hearts of the poor, by assisting families with food. Thanks!

Eph 3:2-3a, 5-6; Mt 2:1-12 FEAST OF FAITH Processions
Why does the liturgy begin with a procession? It is not just a practical matter of getting the ministers of the liturgy from the sacristy to the sanctuary. The procession is a powerful sign of who we are as Christian people. We are not static, staying in one place. We are going somewhere. Our procession leads us to the altar, sign of Christ’s presence in our midst. We move, we process, because we recognize our need for what Christ is preparing for us at that table. We go forward eagerly, because we are hungry for that heavenly food. This procession is an orderly one: servers, deacon, priest presider. Each is set apart by distinctive vesture: albs for the altar servers, dalmatic for the deacon, chasuble for the priest. The procession is an image of the hierarchical structure of the Church. On a deeper level it is an image of unity in diversity. We are all on a journey to the heavenly city, but each of us is clothed with different gifts. We all receive the call to service, but not in the same way. Only by coming together in all our wonderful variety can we achieve the work of the kingdom. —Corinna Laughlin, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
WE ARE GOD’S HOLY FAMILY
The scriptures of Israel are filled with many
stories of barren couples who were miraculously
granted the gift of children by God. Surely the
best known among these is the first reading from
today, from which Luke took inspiration when he
recounted the miraculous birth of John the
Baptist to Zechariah and Elizabeth, and the more
miraculous birth of Jesus to Mary and Joseph. In
each instance, we are given examples or role
models of those who trusted in God. More than
examples of those who trust, they are models of
self-surrender. They abandoned their own
presuppositions and prejudices about the
workings of the world and turned their lives over
to belief in a God who can make life grow where
none ought to; a God who can turn death around
into a new and unimagined life; a God who can,
today, take a tiny child of humble parents in an
insignificant town and make him into a light for
all the world. This is what we, as God’s holy
family, are called to do each day: to trust not in
ourselves and the way we think things should be,
but to open ourselves and surrender ourselves in
faith to a God of endless promise.

What We’re Learning
3rd Grade (Saturdays)
We learned about the Bible being the word of
God. We learned that going to church or
watching Mass online or on TV are ways that we
can celebrate the miracle of the Last Supper
where Jesus changed wine into His Blood and
bread into His Body.
