We are only days away from Summer and I’m sure we’re all counting down until the Christmas festivities begin! This time of year gives us the opportunity to spend time with loved ones, enjoy all the amazing events and activities on offer and reflect on the year that was.

To kick start the festive season, the City is extremely excited to be

hosting the Tianqi Lithium Symphony Spectacular on Saturday, 1 December. After the overwhelming success of the Act-Belong-Commit Rock Symphony, we are thrilled to be once again partnering with the Perth Symphony Orchestra and a host of sponsors to bring residents the biggest annual event in Kwinana at Calista Oval. We hope to see you all there enjoying performances of your favourite rock and pop hits like you’ve never experienced them before.

Looking back over the past few months, I have been fortunate enough to attend a range of events hosted by the City including the Positive Vibes Youth Festival and the inaugural Pioneers Lunch, which celebrated locals who have lived in the area continuously for more than 50 years. It is always a pleasure to see so many residents coming along to these events and enjoying spending time in the Kwinana community.

The site of many events in the past year, I am pleased to announce that the Kwinana Adventure Park recently received yet another accolade in recognition of the amazing open space, high standards and beautifully maintained facilities of the park. The ‘Green Flag’ Award was presented to City staff and Councillor Wendy Cooper at the International Parks and Leisure Congress in Melbourne.

As you may have seen in the media, the City is standing strong in their opposition to the proposed Banskia Road Sand Mine. Joining forces with the Casuarina Wellard Progress Association, we are encouraging residents to get behind this important cause. Find out more by visiting the Casuarina Wellard Progress Association website at cwprogress.com or by visiting their Facebook page.

Looking towards the New Year, it is exciting to see so many developments planned for the City of Kwinana in the coming months, including Australia’s first thermal Waste-to-Energy facility. Recently given the green light to be constructed after a lengthy project approval phase, I am excited to see the significant number of employment opportunities the facility will bring during construction and operation.

It has been a huge year for the City of Kwinana and as 2019 draws closer, I am sure the New Year will bring even more unique events, programs, activities and developments for the City.

On behalf of the Councillors and staff at the City of Kwinana, I wish you all a safe, happy and healthy Christmas and New Year.

Carol Adams, Mayor

such as the Darius Wells Library and Resource Centre, various sporting pavilions and the award-winning Adventure Park.

“It’s also been my pleasure to participate in many tree planting days,” Councillor Lee said.

Always dedicated to professional development, Councillor Lee has completed many training sessions at the Western

Australian Local Government Association and is a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors. She also sits on many committees including the Audit Committee, Kwinana Local Recovery Committee and the Kwinana Community Finding Program Panel.

CITY JOINS FORCES TO STOP BANKSIA SAND MINES

The City of Kwinana has joined forces with the Casuarina Wellard Progress Association, as part of the Stop the Banksia Road Sand Mines campaign, in an effort to prevent the destruction of an ecologically unique and diverse piece of bushland.

The Banksia Road conservation reserve, a beautiful bushland area covering 26 hectares and located at the former Banksia Road Rifle Range site in Wellard, is being proposed to be cleared and turned into a sand mine by construction company Hanson Australia.

Kwinana Mayor Carol Adams said the Stop the Banksia Road Sand Mines campaign aimed to rally the community to get behind this important cause and draw the right political attention and influence to ensure that the community’s concerns in regard to this issue were being heard.

“This site is a major community asset with the City currently managing the area as a conservation reserve in an effort to protect and ensure the preservation of the local native vegetation and fauna which is in excellent condition,” Mayor Adams said.

“We have been lobbying and advising against the construction of the mine for decades due to the devastating impact it can have on the health of the community and the environment, as the site provides habitat to hundreds of native fauna species and and is host to several conservation-significant species including Carnaby and Forest Red-Tailed Black Cockatoos.”

The City together with the Casuarina Wellard Progress Association encourage residents to find out more about the proposal and the issues associated with the proposed sand mine via the Stop the Banksia Road Sand Mine’s website www.StopBanksiaMines.com where supporters can download a letter template and access a contact list of relevant ministers to contact.

The City of Kwinana has received funding from the State Government to install Beach Emergency Numbers (BEN) signs to improve emergency response times at local beaches.

The BEN system was named in honour of Ben Gerring, who lost his life in a fatal shark attack in Mandurah in 2016. BEN signs provide specific location information which is vital when emergency services are deployed.

Mayor Carol Adams said the rollout of nine BEN signs, thanks to the support of funding supplied by the State Government, would commence immediately.

“Given that minutes and seconds can mean the difference between life and death in these situations, it is vital that emergency responders know exactly where they are needed as quickly as possible,” she said.

“It is hoped that these signs will prevent delays when emergency services are having trouble finding the exact location of a beach emergency.”

The BEN Sign Program is a coding system which has been created with a unique prefix and has been seamlessly integrated into systems used by emergency services.

“By quoting the nearest BEN sign code, 000 callers will be able to increase the capacity for first responders to accurately pinpoint the exact location of an emergency,” Mayor Adams said.

“I would urge all Kwinana beach users to familiarise themselves with the BEN signs and take note of the unique code on the beach access point they use.”

BEN signs may also be referred to when reporting shark sightings to Water Police on 9442 8600. This will enable beach managers to implement beach closures earlier with accurate beach location information.

EMERGENCY SIGNAGE TO SAVE LIVES AT KWINANA’S BEACHES

Summer is finally in the air and those pesky mosquitoes have arrived. All Kwinana residents are being encouraged to ‘Fight the Bite’ as part of the City’s newly adopted Integrated Strategic Mosquito and Midge Management Plan.

The aim of this plan is to minimise nuisance and the risk of disease associated with mosquitoes and midges for residents and visitors in the City of Kwinana.

Australia’s first thermal Waste-to-Energy facility has been given the green light, with construction beginning in Kwinana in October 2018.

The facility, which has been co-developed by Macquarie Capital and Phoenix Energy Australia, is undergoing construction in the Kwinana Industrial Area and is scheduled to open by the end of 2021.

Mayor Carol Adams said the City of Kwinana was proud to lead the way and be the first local government to sign a waste-to-energy supply agreement in Australia back in 2013. This action was a major catalyst for the project and paved the way for other local governments in WA to look at the technology that has been widely embraced throughout the rest of the developed world.

“After years of planning, the City is pleased to confirm Australia’s first thermal Waste-to-Energy facility will be built in Kwinana, providing benefits to our community by enhancing the prominence of the Kwinana Industrial Area as the premier place to invest in WA, with significant flow-on effects expected for our local economy with the construction phase of the project alone creating more than 800 jobs,” she said.

“The facility will also realise a number of environmental benefits with the facility estimated to reduce the amount of waste going into landfill and the amount of carbon emissions being released into the atmosphere, which is a primary goal not just for Kwinana, but for all Local Governments.”

The facility will divert almost a quarter of Perth’s post-recycling rubbish, with 400,000 tonnes of household, commercial, and industrial waste being prevented from going to landfill every year and a reduction of 400,000 tonnes of carbon emissions per year which equates to 85,000 cars being taken off the road.

“There is increasing pressure from communities on Councils to address the issue of reduced landfill capacity and to look at long-term solutions for waste management. The Waste-to-Energy Plant does exactly that using residents’ everyday household waste, recovering and recycling metals and then converting the waste to generate energy. The remaining ash residue will also be used as construction material,” Mayor Adams said.

The project has received support from the Western Australian Government, including the provision of the land for the facility through a long-term lease from LandCorp.

Significant changes have been made to the types of recyclable materials accepted in the yellow-topped bin, due to a reduction in global markets.

Soft plastics (cling wrap, bubble wrap, cereal bags etc.), aerosol cans, polystyrene and meat trays cannot be placed in your yellow-topped bin.

For full details, please see our ‘frequently asked questions’ section on the waste and recycling page on the City of Kwinana’s website – www.kwinana.wa.gov.au.

Everyone is encouraged take the following precautions to avoid mosquito bites:

• COVER UP wear long, loose-fitting, light-coloured clothing, covering as much of the body as possible.

• REPEL when outdoors and mosquitoes are present, apply insect repellent containing DEET (diethyltoluamide) or picaridin evenly to exposed skin.

• CLEAN UP simple changes around your home can reduce mosquito breeding. Remove, empty or cover water-holding containers e.g. pot plants, water tanks, ponds, roof gutters, disused car tyres and unmaintained swimming pools.

The City of Kwinana’s famous Adventure Park recently received yet another accolade, the Green Flag Award, at the International Parks and Leisure Congress in Melbourne on 16 October 2018.

The Green Flag Award recognises and celebrates amazing open spaces across the world and is a sign to the public that the space boasts the highest possible standards, is beautifully maintained and has excellent facilities and accessibility.

Mayor Carol Adams said the award was hard-earned by a team of dedicated and passionate staff that includes landscape architects, community development officers, engineers and maintenance crew who have all played a part in making the Adventure Park one of the greatest features of the City.

“We are absolutely delighted to receive the Green Flag Award and it is yet another encouraging mark of success for the Adventure Park,” she said.

“Our family-friendly Adventure Park has become a major drawcard to Kwinana, attracting people from far and wide to experience all that our wonderful City has to offer.”

This will be the fourth award the Kwinana Adventure Park has received to date, having already won 2017 Community Program of the Year, 2017 Playspace of the Year (over $500k) and 2017 Park of the Year.

The state-of-the-art Kwinana Adventure Park is one of the largest universally accessible play spaces in Western Australia.

When kids are involved with food, they eat healthier!

From growing their own, to choosing, shopping, preparing, cooking and even cleaning up, the knowledge and hands-on experience gained by involving kids in the kitchen can be an invaluable life skill.

Teach kids to prepare and cook healthy meals using fruits or vegetables as the hero of the dish. Focus on the colours, textures and flavours of the meal you are making together instead of whether something is healthy or not.

Pick age appropriate tasks, but remember safety first. Be aware of sharp, hot and electric things around you. Have the appropriate level of supervision for your child and what they are doing.

Kids are naturally curious and given the right environment will enjoy the opportunity to get involved. Relax when you get them to help you in the kitchen. Yes, it’s going to be slow and messy, but it can be a fun time for everyone. For great family recipes, visit www.livelighter.com.au/recipes.

Featuring over a hectare of fully-fenced play space, the Park is set under a canopy of towering trees in Kwinana’s City Centre.

“We have worked hard to really put Kwinana ‘on the map’ and create something unique,” said Mayor Adams.

The City of Kwinana’s City Assist team recently came runner-up for the 2018 WA Ranger Team of the Year Award.

This award recognises deeds and achievements by Local Government Ranger teams in service to the community.

“To place as a runner up for this award is great recognition for the outstanding teamwork and dedication undertaken by all staff within the City Assist team over the last 12 months,” said Mayor Carol Adams.

The WA Ranger Team of the Year Award is granted for outstanding teamwork, which is of benefit to the community by the WA Rangers Association.
