The History of the Holidays

Christmas (which means "Feast day of Christ") is

both a sacred religious holiday and a worldwide cultural and

commercial phenomenon. For two millennia, people around

the world have been observing it with traditions and practices

that are both religious and secular in nature. Christians cele-

brate Christmas Day as the anniversary of the birth of Jesus of

Nazareth, a spiritual leader whose teachings form the basis of

their religion. Popular customs include exchanging gifts, deco-

rating Christmas trees, attending church, sharing meals with

family and friends and, of course, waiting for Santa Claus to

arrive. December 25–Christmas Day–has been a federal holi-

day in the United States since 1870.

Hanukkah is a Jewish holiday which celebrates the

victory of the Maccabees over the larger Assyrian army. It also

celebrates a miracle that happened during this time, where

just a day's supply of oil allowed the menorah in the rededicat-

ed Temple in Jerusalem to remain lit for eight days. Therefore,

Jewish people celebrate Hanukkah for eight days. Hanukkah

begins on the 25th day of Kislev according to the Hebrew cal-

endar. Hanukkah begins in late November or December. In

2017 it starts on December 12th. The Hebrew word Hanuk-

kah means rededication.
