    SCVCS Student Spotlight

Meet Katie Franyo, a singer and performer since she was just six years old.Katie says, Singing has always been a passion of mine, and I soon started

guitar which Ive been playing for about four years now. I became interested

in this as a career after I wrote my first song. Writing is a big skill you need in

this business, along with knowing music, stage presence, and you need tohave the passion. Katie began a band, Katina Rose, with her best friend at

the age of 13. Not long after performing in her local area, the popularity of

her band grew so much that she switched schools to SCVCS to have moreflexibility for her music career. She says, We recently released our first EP

called Out of the Garage(available on iTunes, Spotify, and Pandora) featur-

    ing three of my orig-

inal songs and anoriginal song by mypartner. We havegrown so much in

the past six years, and we arent go-

    ing to stop! Katie is

    the epitome of de-

    termination, excel-lent work ethic and

fortitude. She un-derstands that any-thing worth having

will take a lot of mo-

tivation and a posi-tive attitude. Katie

    says, The best thing

    about doing this is

that Im doing what I love. I write these songs that mean a lot to me, and I get

to share them later. I get to lose myself on stage and relieve all the stress I amfeeling when I pick up my guitar. If I could change one thing it would be to

have an album not an EP, but we have to start with baby steps. Congratula-

tions on your EP Katie, and we cant wait to listen to your album thats sure to

    come in the future!

    SCVCS Student Spotlight

    Caleb McDowell

became interested inengineering long ago,and that interest even-

tually led him to theSouth Carolina Engi-neering and Physics

    Scholars Institute.Caleb was accepted

into the institute, andnow has a future in theengineering field.

Caleb said, The fieldof Engineering has al-

ways been something Iwas interested in. Eversince I was very young

    playing with legos, andeventually when I be-gan working on ATV's;

I've been curiousabout how things work.

While at the South Car-olina Engineering and Physics Scholars Institute I learned that this is one of the thingsthat engineers do. Immediately, I decided that this is something I wanted to do. From

Calebs statement, it is clear to see he knows that engineering is the path for him.

Caleb also acknowledged that the pros outweigh the cons when speaking of the en-gineering field. He stated, Some of the pros of the Engineering field are that there are

a shortage of workers in this field. Also the starting salary for this field is high. There aren't

very many cons to this field other than maybe its very math intensive. We can now

understand that the engineering field may lack workers, which may increase the levelof interest of future engineers. Couple that with high starting salaries and there would-

nt be any surprise if other students got involved in the field. Caleb was asked to givefive tips for aspiring engineers just starting out. He replied, Stay in school, study your

math, study your sciences, be motivated, and be on time.

Caleb really enjoys the challenge of making things more efficient, which is what he en-

joys most about the engineering field. However, he wants to raise the awareness ofthe large demand for the job. Hopefully, some of you reading this will think about en-gineering. If so, Im sure Caleb would be more than willing to help you get started.

Caleb seems to really enjoy what he does and clearly has a bright future. We com-

mend you and wish you the best, Caleb!
