Every 20c commemorative
Comprehensive, beautifully presented and defined by strictly Uncirculated quality, this unique collection offers you the chance to secure the lowest mintage commemorative 20c coins ever issued for circulation in Australia.
Struck by the Royal Australian Mint in honour of the 100th anniversary of the establishment
of the Australian nation in January 1901, the 2001 20c Federation Series comprises nine coins. Unique, one-year-only Australian legal tender types, the program features a 20c commemorative for each of the country’s nine States
and Territories. Issued in tiny numbers, the nine States & Territories
coins are the lowest mintage circulating issues in the
entire commemorative 20c series! Bearing in mind that the annual
average 20c mintage since 1966 is approximately 42m, the average mintage of the nine coins is an amazingly low 2.09m, with the smallest mintage being 2m and the largest a mere 2.32m!Released at random across Australia by the Reserve Bank of Australia, and, like all commemoratives, hoarded out of circulation at super speed, the tiny mintages have guaranteed that this sought after series is all but impossible to piece together from change. Even if you were extremely lucky, and did find these coins, the decade that has now passed since issue means you would never find them in strictly Uncirculated quality – as presented here. It is the scarcity of these coins in any grade, and particularly in Unc, that makes the 2001 Federation 20c Coin Pack such a valuable acquisition for the serious decimal collector. Presented within an attractive, informative, full-colour pack, and absolutely outstanding value-for-money at an average price of A$7.80 per coin, you must not miss the chance to create the complete Federation 20c collection in one hit! With these coins scarce in strictly Uncirculated quality, we have a limited number of collections available.

issued for circulation – in Unc!
The Perfect Partner! The compulsory complement to the 2001 20c States & Territories Federation Series, this impressive presentation encompasses every other 20c commemorative issued for circulation from 1966 to 2011 – all in strictly Uncirculated quality!
Australia’s very first 20c commemorative, and the nation’s second 20c type, the low-mintage 1995 United Nations 50th Anniversary 20c (less than five million struck!) was an instant hit, and remains a major collector favourite. Like the 2001 Bradman 20c, which, as with all Bradman coins is hotly pursued by collector and non-collector alike, the 1995 United Nations 20c was hoarded out of circulation at speed and is rarely found in change – and never found in the impeccable Uncirculated quality seen here. Subsequent to the issue of Australia’s first two 20c commemoratives, and the 2001 States & Territories Series offered at left, the Royal Australian Mint released the Australia’s Volunteers 20c in 2003 and the World War II 60th Anniversary 20c in 2005. Following a break of some five years, the 20c as a commemorative vehicle has come back with a vengeance in recent times. The ATO Centenary 20c was released into circulation in 2010, with the Royal Wedding 20c, International Year of Volunteers 10th Anniversary 20c and International Women’s Day 20c all issued in 2011. Rendering that traditional search
through change a thing of the past, ALL eight unique, one-year-only types are found in the 1966-2011 20c Commemorative Collection – PLUS a bonus Platypus 20c. Better still, every coin has been carefully selected for its sparkling mint-state condition! Underpinned by strictly Uncirculated quality, and tremendous value-for-money at under A$60, this exciting collection is also an impressive presentation. Preserving the pristine quality for the long-term, the nine coins are set behind archival bubble and sealed in a beautifully illustrated, informative presentation pack – ready to wrap as an affordable, interesting Christmas gift!

The Best of British –

A permanent and extremely
affordable way to record
this major milestone in
British history, Britain’s
official Diamond Jubilee
commemorative is
distinguished by not one but
TWO unique, one-year-only
portraits!
Measuring 38.61mm in diameter, this sparkling
BU £5 is highlighted by an inspired interpretation
of the original Mary Gillick portrait, united with
a truly majestic mature portrayal of the Queen
on the obverse. Naturally proving extremely popular, each official British legal tender £5 coin is presented within an illustrated, informative official Royal Mint pack.
New, one-year-only British Sovereign!STUNNING NEW ST GEORGE DESIGN SHOCKS MARKET!
Original, provocative and inspiring…
Distinguished by a captivating reverse design, this unique
legal tender coin forms a stunning tribute to the 200th
anniversary of the birth of Charles Dickens.
Thought to be the finest writer of the Victoria Era, Dickens enjoyed greater
popularity during his lifetime than any other previous author. The creator of
some of Britain’s most famous works of literature – such as Great Expectations,
A Christmas Carol and The Adventures of Oliver Twist, to name but three
– Dickens is still read by millions of people across the globe.
As original, provocative and inspiring as his writings, this one-year-only Bimetal
£2 features an absolutely outstanding reverse design. Immediately recognisable
as Dickens, the profile found on the 28.40mm flan has been created from
the titles of his most famous works! Set in an official pack, this extraordinary
work of numismatic art represents excellent value at just A$18.95.

Always a major highlight of
the collector calendar, the
release of the annual British
Sovereign is sure to put the
global collector community
in a spin in 2012. For only
the second time since 1817,
when Benedetto Pistrucci’s
neo-classical masterpiece
was first employed on
British currency, the world’s
most famous gold coin
features a sensational new
interpretation of the St
George & Dragon design!
Created by noted British sculptor,
Paul Day, in honour of the Diamond
Jubilee of Elizabeth II, this new
distinctive 22-carat type is a fitting
successor to Pistrucci’s timeless
design. St George is portrayed
more in the guise of medieval
knight than classical hero, whilst the
dragon is depicted as a much more
threatening foe than that portrayed
by Pistrucci. Striking to the eye, the
demand inspired by the aesthetic
appeal of the coin will be intensified
by its unique, one-year-only status.
A must-have for anyone who owns
an example of Pistrucci’s famous
work, Downies is delighted that
our status as official Royal Mint
distributor enables us to give our
clients the chance to be a part of
this milestone in British coinage.
Perhaps your only chance to secure
this design, as virtually every 2012

sold out at the Mint!

BABY DRAGON sparks firestorm of demand!
Sought after by full-colour coin
collectors worldwide, and also
catching the eye of those
looking for a highly original
Christmas gift, the Perth
Mint’s 2012 50c Baby Dragon
1/2oz Silver Proof has, as
predicted, sparked a firestorm
of demand – as with virtually all
of the 2012 Year of the Dragon
commemoratives thus far unveiled.
Struck to the pinnacle of Proof quality from
half a troy ounce of pure, lustrous .999
silver, and distinguished by a captivating,
caricature-style design of a baby dragon
carrying a sack full of gifts, this unique
legal tender type is a sparkling illustration
of the Perth Mint’s world-famous full-
colour minting techniques. Contrasting
superbly with the silken, Proof quality mirrored field, and beautifully accommodated by
the near crown-sized 36.60mm
diameter flan, the Baby Dragon looks absolutely
brilliant rendered in blazing red and yellow
hues. Ready to wrap up and pop beneath the
Christmas Tree, each precious metal Proof
is set within an official Perth Mint case in
an illustrated outer box, accompanied by a
numbered Certificate of Authenticity.
An immensely affordable Year of the Dragon
precious metal keepsake, the 2012 50c Baby
Dragon 1/2oz Silver Proof is also extremely
exclusive. Refusing to take advantage of the
barnstorming demand seen for all Year of the
Dragon issues, the Perth Mint has restricted the
worldwide mintage to a surprisingly low 7,500
coins! With just a few coins remaining from
our original allocation, don’t miss the chance
to secure this exquisite full-colour coin at the value-for-money Official Issue Price of just A$67.50.

Premium grade Silver 1oz Dragons GUARANTEED!
With interest driven by the appeal of the mythical dragon, and the insatiable appetite of the precious metal investment market, the Perth Mint’s 2012 $1 Year of the Dragon 1oz Silver BU has been met with devastating demand. Indeed, our
original allocation of this key annual issue was
wiped out before we even got the chance to offer it in Money! A fantastic opportunity to enjoy the sheer excellence of the Perth Mint’s precious metal coin production, we are
delighted to announce that we have this important 45.60mm .999 fine silver crown back in stock! Even better, the few coins available have been officially slabbed and graded by US numismatic experts Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) at MS69 – the second highest grade available on the extremely demanding PCGS Sheldon Scale! With the 300,000-coin mintage of the 2012 $1 Year of the Dragon 1oz Silver BU sold-out at the Perth Mint in record time, you must not miss the chance to secure an officially verified, premium grade example of what may well be the most popular coin of 2012. With only a small number of utterly flawless, officially graded MS69 examples in stock, we highly recommend immediate action.
Sold out at the Mint!
the hottest coins in numismatics!
Of the great variety of Perth Mint Year of the Dragon issues, the 2012 $100 Year of the Dragon 1oz Gold BU has undoubtedly triggered the fiercest demand. Indeed, Downies allocation sold out before we had the chance to offer it in Money, and the 30,000-coin mintage has already sold out at the Mint! Thanks to a rigorous worldwide search, however, culminating in the acquisition of a small batch of coins from Europe, we have this spectacular 1oz .9999 gold coin back in stock! Whilst the fervent interest in the 2012 $100 Year of the Dragon 1oz Gold BU is in large part due to the tremendous popularity of the Year of the Dragon in the Chinese Lunar Calendar, the virtually instantaneous devastation of the mintage illustrates the massive general demand for the Perth Mint’s Lunar New Year Gold BU Program over recent years – from both collector and investor alike.
The 1oz Gold BU, in particular, is an extremely powerful illustration of the Mint’s world-renowned precious metal prowess, and this prestigious annual issue has naturally caught the eye of both Lunar collectors and traditional Australian legal tender coin collectors. Just as importantly, demand for the Lunar 1oz Gold BU is the result of the burgeoning global precious metal investment market. With an ever-increasing number of people in search of a cost-effective, Government-backed way to secure .9999 gold in these troubled economic times, the 30,000-coin mintages of the 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011 $100 Lunar 1oz Gold BU issues have all sold out! With the 30,000-coin mintage of the 39.34mm 2012 $100 Year of the Dragon 1oz Gold BU wiped out even faster than those of its forerunners, this is sure to be one of very few opportunities you will have to add this coin to your collection.

Sure to add a unique sparkle to any collection – and make for a Christmas gift of truly eye-catching quality – the 2011 5 Dinars Bon Nadal Merry Christmas Silver Proof is headlined by a genuine Swarovski crystal representing the Star of Bethlehem! A most fitting celebration of this fundamental symbol of Christmas, and an exciting exploration of the powers of modern minting, this exclusive legal tender coin is struck to immaculate Proof quality from 25g of sterling silver. Measuring a crown-sized 38.61mm in diameter, the broad flan features a striking full-colour design, with the Swarovski crystal Star of Bethlehem shining brightly
above the fully struck-up depiction of the manger where Jesus Christ was born. Bearing the inscription ‘Bon Nadal’ – meaning ‘Merry Christmas’ in Catalan, the official language of the issuing nation of Andorra – this official legal tender release is also extremely exclusive. Sure to be swept away in the countdown to Christmas, with this coin such an appropriate, impressive gift, the mintage has been restricted to just 2,500 coins – each set in a ready-to-wrap case with a Certificate of Authenticity.
There’s only one key ingredient of a genuine Aussie Christmas pudding – genuine Australian silver! Without the ‘trey’ (threepence) or ‘zac’ (sixpence), it’s just not the real thing!
The addition of silver coins to the Christmas Pudding is a custom that dates back to the 19th century, with the discovery of a threepence or sixpence traditionally believed to bring the finder health, wealth and happiness for the coming year. A key part of the Australian Christmas experience, this longstanding tradition continues at Downies in 2011, with these bags of original predecimal silver coins. And, with each bag comprising nine coins – six silver threepences and three silver sixpences – you can give anyone that missed out on a coin in the pudding one of the extras!
Whether to add an authentic Aussie flavour to your Christmas Day celebrations – or perhaps simply to indulge in the nostalgia of Christmases past, when an Aussie silver coin was as essential to the Christmas Pudding as the flour – Downies Christmas Pudding Pack is sensational value-for-money at a mere A$29.95.

‘And there came a certain widow, and she threw in two mites…and [Jesus said]…that this poor widow hath cast more in than all they which have cast into the treasury. For all they did cast in of their abundance; but she did cast in all she had.’ Mark 12:41-44 Taking collectors back to the time of the birth of Christ, the Judaean Bronze Prutah is the most likely candidate as the Widow’s Mite – a coin used by Jesus in his teachings, as noted in the Bible in Mark 12:41-44. Ancient history you can hold in your hands, the Bronze Prutah was issued in the name of Alexander Jannaeus – one of the first Hasmonaean Kings to produce coins. HeadingThe Silver Owl of Ancient Athens!AMONG THE WORLD’S MOST FAMOUS COINS…
If you only own one Ancient coin, then the Athens Owl Silver Tetradrachm is the one. Underpinned by an exquisite blend of extraordinary beauty, rich history and paramount
importance, it is an everlasting artefact of Ancient Greece, and undoubtedly among the most popular
of all Ancient coins.
The Symbol of Athens…
The companion of the Goddess Athena, the patron goddess of Athens, the Owl was instantly recognisable as a principal symbol of this key Ancient Greek City-state. Militarily powerful, and the cultural and economic
heartbeat of the Ancient Greek world for centuries, Athens
naturally chose the Owl to feature on the city’s coins. The most notable of
these was the Owl Silver Tetradrachm, issued
from the 6th to the 2nd
century BC.
Art of the Ancients…First issued around 525 BC, the Owl Silver Tetradrachm is a coin of breathtaking beauty. As illustrated by the coins offered here, struck between 454 and 415BC, the Owl Silver Tetradrachm carried the helmeted head of Athena on the obverse – a portrait famous for the almond shaped eye and archaic smile. Symbolising wisdom, an enchanting design of Athena’s attribute, the owl, is found on the reverse. The first coin to incorporate the ‘heads & tails’ configuration that has since become standard, these designs changed very little over hundreds of years – long after other cities began to strike coins of a more refined artistic style. Why? Because the Owl Silver Tetradrachm was considered the definition of ‘good money’, and the authorities were naturally reluctant to do anything to reduce the acceptability of the coin.
The definition of ‘good money’…With most struck from silver excavated from Athens’ rich mines, the Owl Tetradrachm circulated throughout the Mediterranean, as well as other parts of the world. It was the most respected coin of antiquity, in part due to Athens’ scrupulous retention of the coin’s precise weight and purity over hundred of years. Always near 17 grams (270 grains) of pure silver, the Owl Silver Tetradrachm was widely accepted across the Ancient world – a point illustrated by the unearthing of examples as far afield as North Africa and India.
A crucial opportunity…Today, the Owl Silver Tetradrachm is the most sought after of all Ancient coins. A sensational opportunity to add this exceptional work of Ancient art to your collection, we are delighted to offer genuine Athens Owl Silver Tetradrachms – struck between 454-415BC and generally bearing an original ‘chop mark’ employed to confirm the quality of the silver. With only a few in stock at Downies, an early order is imperative. The last time we offered this prestigious Ancient coin, earlier this year, our stock was devastated within days.

Your link to the Ancient World…Ancient coins provide the chance to form a powerful connection with the events and people of cultures and civilisations of the distant past. The Athens Owl Silver Tetradrachm forms an excellent case-in-point, with both the designs, and the reason the coin was struck, directly related to some of the key events in Ancient history.
Powerful symbols of Athens, the portrait of Athena and the Owl reverse were embellished in the aftermath of one of the most famous battles in history – the Battle of Marathon in 490BC. That battle, which saw the heavily outnumbered Athenians overcome their Persian enemies, led to a
major increase in Greek influence over the Ancient world.
Recording a truly significant moment in the history of Athens, the previously plain helmet of Athena was adorned with olive leaves – a symbol of peace and victory. Perhaps even more fascinating, a crescent moon was added above the owl, to reflect the stage of the moon’s cycle on the night of the battle. As the Spartans, who refused to help the Athenians because religious laws demanded they fight only when the full moon rose, this addition is thought to represent Athenian pride in defeating the Persians without outside help.
Just as compelling, the Owl Silver Tetradrachm was struck in proliferation in the 5th century BC for two very good reasons. The cost of the Peloponnesian Wars between Athens and Sparta would have been largely covered by the coins struck from the lucrative silver mines in Athens, whilst builders engaged in grandiose projects during the 5th century such as the construction of the Parthenon were also paid with Owl Silver Tetradrachms.
Could the coins before you have once been held by a soldier who fought the Spartans? Or by a man who helped build one of the world’s greatest cultural monuments?

The Silver Cistophorus of Pergamum & Ephesus…SCARCE ROMAN PROVINCIAL COIN TYPE!
A wonderful opportunity for the serious Ancient coin collector, we are delighted to present this scarce Roman provincial silver coin type struck during the 2nd and 1st centuries BC – the Silver Cistophorus of Pergamum & Ephesus.
A fascinating Ancient type…Originating early in the 2nd century BC, the Cistophorus was the key coin type of Pergamum and Ephesus – the two principal cities of Asia Minor (modern Turkey). A large type weighing approximately 12 grams, the Silver Cistophorus took its name from the sacred chest of the cult of Dionysus, the cista mystica – the basket of snakes used during the mysterious cult’s initiation rites. Surrounded by an ivy wreath, the cista mystica forms a key element of the reverse design, with a serpent emerging from the half open box. As with the reverse, the obverse is an elaborate work of numismatic art, featuring a bowcase flanked by two serpents, with a monogram above, as well as a serpent entwined around a thyrsus to the right.
The expansion of Roman rule…The city of Pergamum became the capital of the independent Kingdom of Pergamum early in the 3rd century BC following the collapse of the Kingdom of Thrace, with the Attalid dynasty ruling from 281-133BC. Strong allies of the Roman Republic, the Attalids supported the Romans in wars against Macedon during the 3rd and 2nd centuries BC, and were rewarded with much of Asia Minor as a result. The city of Ephesus fell under Attalid rule in 190BC, following Rome’s defeat of Antiochus III the Great of the Seleucid Dynasty. The last ruler of independent Pergamum, Attalus III, bequeathed the territory to Rome, and on his death in 133BC, most of the kingdom became the Roman province of Asia.
Issued by Mark Antony’s brother? Although Rome drew Pergamum and Ephesus within its realm in 133BC, the Cistophorus continued to be issued in largely the same format as during the rule of the Attalids. Indeed, the denomination was struck until the time of Hadrian (117-38AD), and although later issues took on more of a Roman style, the Cistophorus of the 2nd and 1st centuries BC bore the traditional
designs, distinguished by the monogram of the Roman quaestor (magistrate in charge of finance) under whom it was issued. Fascinatingly, although we cannot be certain of the identity of the quaestor that authorised the issue of the Silver Cistophori we have in stock, which were struck during the first century of Roman rule, it may well have been the brother of the legendary Mark Antony, Lucius Antony, who served as Quaestor in the 60s and 50s BC!
Superb quality! A coin of intriguing aesthetic appeal, and considered a very scarce type today, the 133-56BC Silver Cistophori we have in stock are all in virtually mint state condition! A fine addition to any collection, and surprisingly affordable at A$495 apiece, we have only a small number of coins available.
A tale of two cities…Pergamum and Ephesus were two of the most important cities in what was once known as Asia Minor – now modern Turkey.
Originally settled by Greek colonists, Pergamum became an independent kingdom in the 3rd century BC under the Attalid dynasty. Wise, benevolent rulers, the Attalids proved to be one of the strongest allies of the Roman Republic during the 3rd and 2nd centuries BC, supporting the Romans in their battles against states in Greece and the Near East. They played a role, for example, in the First, Second and Third Macedonian Wars, and were rewarded with much of Asia Minor as a result. In 190BC, the Attalids had also
gained control of their major rival, Ephesus, following Rome’s victory over Seleucid ruler Antiochus III. Nearly six decades later, in 133BC, the last independent ruler of Pergamum, Attalas III, bequeathed the kingdom to Rome, with the region becoming the Roman province of Asia.
The fortunes of the rival cities changed dramatically in the time after Rome’s creation of the new province, and Ephesus – notable as the site of the Temple of Artemis, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World – entered a period of great prosperity. Indeed, with the population estimated to be around 250,000 in the 1st century BC,
Ephesus was one of the largest cities in the Mediterranean. Although Pergamum was the capital of Asia, the greater accessibility and burgeoning commercial importance of Ephesus saw it overtake its rival, and in 27AD, its pre-eminence was confirmed when Emperor Augustus made the city the capital of the province.
By the year 100AD, Ephesus was second in importance, not to Pergamum, but only to Rome itself, with the estimated population of 400,000-500,000 making it the largest city in Roman Asia. For Pergamum, the glory days were consigned to the pages of history.

It is only in later years, when gaps appear in collections, that collectors turn their attention to these non-commemorative issues. The coins found in this value-for-money 6-coin set are prime examples of this phenomenon.Important, high-grade and, best of all, incredibly affordable, this collection incorporates examples of the Royal Australian Mint’s 1996, 1997 & 1998 20c coins, united with the 1999, 2000 & 2001 20c coins. A limited window of opportunity!
A truly inspired tribute to one of the world’s most revered architectural
masterpieces – highlighted by a genuine stained
glass window set within the
expansive 50mm flan – we are delighted to have secured a tiny allocation of the exclusive,
prestigious 2011 $10 Windows
of Heaven Seville Cathedral Silver Proof.
Crafted from a massive 50g of sterling silver, and restricted to a mintage of just 2,000, this spellbinding coin pays homage to Spain’s spectacular World Heritage listed Seville Cathedral. Among the most famous shrines
of Christian worship, and notable as the burial site for Christopher

Downies Australian Coin Auction’s Sale 310! GET READY FOR ALL THE AUCTION ACTION!
Whilst the end of the year gives us a brief moment to reflect on what has been another record-breaking 12 months for numismatics in this country in general, and for Downies Australian Coin Auctions in particular, there’s no time to rest on our laurels! Although the excitement of Downies last auction for 2011 – a smashing success, with the sale ultimately registering an 82.8% clearance rate and a total of almost A$1 million in final hammer prices – has barely had time to settle, preparations for our first auction of 2012 are already in full swing. Indeed, to be held at our headquarters in the historic
Block Arcade, found in Melbourne’s CBD on the 21st, 22nd and 23rd of February 2012, Sale 310 is already shaping up to be one of our most exciting auctions ever. A host of mouth-watering material has already been consigned, and alongside the traditionally outstanding range of predecimal and decimal Australian coins and banknotes, our next auction will include items from an immensely broad array of collectable fields. It is sure to be a sale that no serious collector will want to miss! Downies Australian Coin Auctions illustrated full-colour catalogue for Sale 310 will be
available in early February, but we highly recommend you keep your eye on our website, www.downies.com/auctions. Not only packed with all the information you need to know to be a part of all the auction action, our website will soon feature every lot from Sale 310. From all the staff at Downies Australian Coin Auctions – and those in Downies mailorder, retail and rarities departments – we would like to wish you and your family a happy and safe festive season.

Indeed, Downies celebrates its 80th anniversary in 2012, and in our nearly eight decades in the industry, we have seldom seen the fervent demand witnessed in
2011. The Royal Australian Mint’s inspired Wool Industry coins, the Perth Mint’s astonishingly successful Bush Babies Silver Proof and Treasures of Australia series, the fantastic range of new Australian Show Products, the Royal Wedding commemoratives, the stunning array of Australian military commemoratives, the enthralling range of international releases…the list of red-hot collectables unveiled in 2011 is virtually endless.
And, as we prepare ourselves for what is sure to be a record-breaking 2012 – with coins issued for the Year of the Dragon, the Diamond Jubilee of Elizabeth II, the London 2012 Olympic Games and more – what better time could there be than right now to reflect upon some of the key numismatic highlights of 2011?
