PASTORS PIECE"Glory to God in the heavenly heights,

Peace to all men and women on earth who pleasehim." Luke 2:14 MSG

The greatest gift humanity has ever re-ceived is Jesus, the Messiah, the Christ,God with us. We celebrate once againthis glorious event which marks themystery of our reconciliation, or renewalof relationship, with our Creator. How

magnificent is the story of Jesus' birth inbringing the joy of rebirth into our own lives. Justimagine how your own life is touched, not just atChristmastime, but every single day, by the love, power, peace, joy and hope brought through the in-nocence of the Christ event. We celebrate onceagain the appearance of God in the flesh, come tobring hope to the hopeless, strength to the weary, comfort to our grieving hearts.

Around us are brightly lit, colorful lights, and treesdecorated with family treasures, ribbons or tinsel.

There can be a feeling of urgency among us, thatoften manifests in the mad rush for gifts for lovedones, perhaps gifts of obligation, perhaps rushing toprepare for family with joy (and sometimes trepida-tion!). There are Christmas-pageant preparationsboth at home and at school, school parties, holidayfestivities hither, thither and yon! Whew!!! When will itend?!? Can you hear yourself muttering, "This iscrazy! I can hardly wait until the new year," or "I hatethis time of year for what it has become," or "Look atthe consumerism! Look at my bank account empty!

All these people I have to buy for! I don't even want

to see..." or "If I hear that song one more time, I'll..."Fill in the blanks.

    Slow down...wait, listen, pause, breathe.

Experience the quietness of this new beginning, letyour hands relax, your fingers open palm up and al-low the chaos of the world's spirit slip from your grip.

The LamplighterDo it right now, in a quiet place. Then allow thegentle, energizing strength of Christ tingle throughyour fingers and palms, up your arms, down intoyour heart. Wait, listen, pause, breathe...

Allow the wings of angels to carry your soul to themanger.

With joyful Christmas blessings from my heart,Pastor Kristin

The Birth of Jesus2 In those days Caesar Augustusissued a decree that a census should betaken of the entire Roman world.2

(This was the first census that tookplace while Quirinius was governor of Syria.)3And

everyone went to their own town to register.4 So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazarethin Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. 5

He went there to register with Mary, who waspledged to be married to him and was expecting achild. 6 While they were there, the time came for thebaby to be born, 7 and she gave birth to her firstborn,a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in amanger, because there was no guest room available for

them.8And there were shepherds living out in the fieldsnearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. 9Anangelof the Lord appeared to them, and the glory ofthe Lord shone around them, and they were terrified.10 But the angel said to them, Do not be afraid Ibring you good news that will cause great joy for allthe people. 11 Today in the town of David a Saviorhas been born to you; he is the Messiah the Lord12

This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby

wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.

    13

Suddenly a great company of the heavenly hostappeared with the angel, praising God and saying, 14

Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth

peaceto those on whom his favor rests.

15 When the angels had left them and gone intoheaven, the shepherds said to one another, Lets goto Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened,

which the Lord has told us about.

16 So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph,

and the baby, who was lying in the manger.

17 When they had seen him, they spread the wordconcerning what had been told them about this child,18 and all who heard it were amazed at what theshepherds said to them. 19 But Mary treasured up allthese things and pondered them in her heart. 20 Theshepherds returned, glorifying and praising God forall the things they had heard and seen, which were

just as they had been told. Luke 2:1-20 (NIV)

OCWMThe most powerful typhoon in his-tory devastated the Philippinesthis week, and we have learnedalso through the news about other disasters in theUS. In our own congregations, there are people for

whom we pray each week because of their own per-sonal or family needs and crises. Staying connectedis so much a part of our faith. What are the many ways we can respond to crises? Our Church's Wider Mission (OCWM) offering re-cently supported crisis response in miraculous ways:

Reports and updates from our partner churchesand pastors in the Philippines were shared andposted online (ucc.og) as soon as they were re-ceived.

Special mission offering monies were sent evenas the storm was still pounding the islands.

Prayer requests and notices of illness and deathin our conference family are conveyed to all as soonas the information is known.

Advice and resources focusing on preparedness intimes of need created by local churches, are col-lected and shared throughout the conference. You gave, and together we enabled miracles in re-sponse to the needs of many.

Our Church Works Miracles!OCWM: creating miracles every day.

Butterfly Room3And if I go and prepare a place for you,I will come again, and receive you untomyself; that where I am, there ye may

    be also.

    John 14:3 (KJV)

For That I am ThankfulIt doesn't seem to get any better, but it doesn't get any

worse, either. For that I am thankful. There are no more pictures to be taken, but there are

memories to be cherished. For that I am thankful. There is a missing chair at the table, but the circle of

family gathers close. For that I am thankful. The turkey is smaller, but there is still stuffing.

For that I am thankful. The days are shorter, but the nights are softer. For that I am thankful.

The pain is still there, but it lasts only moments. For that I am thankful. The room is still empty, the soul still aches, but the

heart remembers. For that I am thankful. The guests still come, the dishes pile up, but the dish-

washer works. For that I am thankful. The name is still missing, the words still unspoken, but the silence is shared. For that I am thankful.

The stillness remains, but the sadness is smaller. For that I am thankful. The moment is gone, but the love is forever. For that I am blessed. For that I am grateful.

Love was once (and still is) a part of my being...For that I am living.May your holidays and special days be filled with rea-sons to be thankful. Having loved and having beenloved is perhaps the most wondrous reason of all.
