The BTCMD’s fall specialty had a substantial 57 entries for judge Mrs Norma Smith of Thunder Bay, Ontario with 10 entered in the sweepstakes under Mrs Peggy Selk of Woodstock, IL.

Exhibitors, judges and our capable steward, TCM’s own Karen Elliott persevered through the weather that got wetter and colder as the day progressed.

Club member Brianne Colling took photos and candids this year. Exhibitors were able to view and select photos on her computer inside the VFW hall after the show. You can see samples of Brianne’s work at :www.briannecollingphotography.com.

The group adjourned to the warm and dry VFW hall to enjoy a delicious hot meal after the show accompanied by a bag raffle and sales of a new club t-shirt design featuring a 2011 Camaro convertible.

I am not a shy person. I have no end of

opinions and I am not afraid to speak

my mind when the spirit moves me.

Anyone who knows me can vouch for

that! But the mere thought of judging

made my stomach do flip -flops. It’s

not as though I haven’t had people

to talk to about it, or successful role

models to learn from. I have friends

who have their AKC licenses and I

have lots of friends who have judged

sweepstakes. Heck, my husband

judged one of the largest Futurity

entries at our National Specialty. But

the thought of me in the middle of

the ring – not a happy idea.

And then one day an email arrived

from a regional club and if you

guessed that they asked me to judge

a sweepstakes you are correct. The

club has a great group of folks, it’s

usually low key and very friendly – in

other words, a great place for a first

judging assignment. By now enough

of my friends had encouraged me to

give it a try and in a weak moment, I

hit reply and uttered that three letter

word that would mean no turning

back – I said “Yes”. And as it goes,

another invitation came along, to

judge a sweepstakes in another part

of the country about a month after

the first assignment. It’s kind of like

the first potato chip – it’s hard to say

“no” once the first one is out of the

bag. And just as quickly as I had

sworn I would never judge, I had 2

assignments. What was I thinking?

For the next 8 months I studied

other judges as they completed

their assignments. Sitting ringside

I had no problem finding what I

considered to be the best dog in the

class. Fine, but would I be able to

place the remainder of the class in

the time allotted? I’d been told a

million times that you “know” what

you’re going to do when your entry

first comes into the ring. My fear was

that the dog of my dreams would

arrive, and then he/she would take

those first fateful steps and it would

all fall apart. Then what would I do?

About a month before my assignment

I was sitting ringside, mentoring

an experienced judge who was

applying for his license in my breed.

We chatted about the dogs, the

breed standard, the selections being

made that day and I shared with him

that I would soon be judging my first

udging dogs. It’s something we all do every time we go to a dog show, plan a litter, evaluate puppies, or attend a dog training class. We express our opinions by the animals we choose to breed, the puppies we keep in a litter, and the dogs that we take into the ring. So why is it so intimidating when you get asked for the first time to stand in the middle of the ring and do precisely what you’ve been doing all along?

Sweepstakes. He had three pieces of

advice. First, treat every exhibitor with

respect and consideration. Second,

make your decision and don’t second-

guess yourself. And Third, enjoy the

experience. Another very good friend

of mine told me that judging was one

of the best learning experiences you

can have in dogs. They were both

right.

The big day arrived. I flew out the

day before, met up with a friend who

happened to be judging the morning

event – I was on in the afternoon -

perfect companionship for the hours

before the show. My roommate

arrived with wine and appetizers

and both the wine and conversation

flowed. We talked about everything

under the sun – and of course, the

show the next day.

There was a saying from the ‘50’s or

‘60’s – no doubt coined by someone

in the clothing industry –the clothes

make the man. I truly believe that

there is nothing better to boost your

confidence than an outfit you feel

great in. And I had just the one for my

assignment.

As I was driving to the show site it

finally struck me – I was the one who

got to make the decision today. I

was the one who would pick the best

dog on that day at that time in the

ring. As I walked the show grounds I

thought of the times I had been there

before. I have a lot of fond memories

of previous dog shows associated

with this site. It made me smile to

think that this would be the first place

I’d judge. It was going to be a great

day.

I thoroughly enjoyed my assignment.

My entry was very nice, the exhibitors

were all very polite and for the most

part the dogs behaved themselves. It

is different when you are in the middle

of the ring. You get to see the dogs

up close and personal. You get to put

your hands on them. And you have

to judge them based on what you see

that day.

It is amazing how good or bad a dog

can look based on how it is presented.

And presentation matters. A lot. It’s

hard to tell how clean a dog is coming

and going when it comes and goes in a

zigzag of a line. It’s also interesting to

watch the exhibitor who has managed

to remain oblivious to the ring pattern

and chooses to do his or her own

thing. Or the handler who stands at

the end of the lead grand standing

a dog that barely has a foot placed

right. Showmanship is important, but

you need to start with the dog and

work your way back to the other end

of the lead.

The advice that I was given was spot-

on; pardon the pun. You do have a

good idea of what you will do once

you’ve taken that first look down the

line. And when “the one” walks into

the ring, you know it. In my case, “the

one” never disappointed me either

standing or in motion.

Two months later I had the pleasure

of judging again, this time with an

entirely different set of dogs and

none of the trepidation I felt before

my first assignment. I thoroughly

enjoyed myself. This time I had

several very young puppies, and they

can change appearance right before

your eyes. The puppy that leaves you

to go around the ring can look entirely

different when he returns back to you.

I think with every assignment you learn

something new, one of the consistent

things about the sport of dogs – and

what could be better than that!

We live in an “electronic age”. New technology is growing rapidly and it can be very hard to keep up with all the new concepts, gadgets & modern services that are now common place in our society.

We have changed the way we talk on the phone, listen to music, watch movies on TV & obtain our day to day information.

Our communication has changed too as we find ourselves emailing, texting, blogging & tweeting to “socially connect” with each other and gather information. The inventions of Cell phones, I pods, Blue Ray devices, computers & more has thrust us into a technology driven world that we are now part of (despite many who are still kicking & screaming in protest)

With all this “modernizing” of how we communicate & entertain ourselves, it is no surprise that the publishing world is changing too.

Books are available now to be read electronically with their new high tech devices (Kindle, I pad, etc) and the magazine world is jumping on board!

I came to the realization many years back that Dog Publications should integrate in this “high tech” world. People should be able to advertise their dogs, breedings, wins & more in ONE place for the world to see for free....the ULTIMATE network!Many people have websites & blogs showing off their dogs, photos but viewers have to go to many different sites to view dogs & many just don’t.

Advertising should not be a confusing process.Many people seem to be intimidated or confused about advertising in an electronic magazine.We want to make advertising easy for youso that you can show off your dog(s) in our E Breed Magazines.We would like to provide you with some step by step instructructions & offer some helpful tips to make it easy ,affordable & fun for you to advertising your dog in our E Breed magazines.

WHERE / HOW TO SEND ADS & ARTICLES:E mail us to request an ad. We will respond quickly & work with you on all you need for your ad. All ads can be done electronically by sending us photos & information via email. If you need to send hard copies of photos or CD’s, we can accept them at our mailing address.

INFORMATION WE NEED TO PROCESS YOUR AD1) What type of ad you want (Full page/ Litter announcement/ Club announcement, etc.)2) Are you submitting a finished ad or do you need us to design your ad. 3) Payment for your ad.(We must receive payment before we begin your ad).

INFORMATION WE NEED IF WE ARE TO DESIGN YOUR AD1) Photo of your dog (high resolution of 300dpi or greater) 2) Information about your dog (registered name / Sire & Dam/ Breeders/ Owners).3) Text/ copy for the ad.4) Any additional info (logos, graphics, background requests, etc)

5) Additional design fees are required for more than 1 revision or for custom designs (photo editing/ removal of backgrounds, special graphics, etc.)

PHOTO /AD SPECS IF YOU ARE SUBMITTING A FINISHED ADFinal ads must be submitted in PDF format & must also be >300dpi.Page dimensions for 1 page ad: 7.5’’W X 9.0” H , no margins required.Page dimensions for 2 page spread: 15.0”W X 9 0” H (submit as 1 pdf /landscape spread).We need all pages to be the dimensions above.All photos to be used in ad layouts must be submitted with >300dpi resolution in JPEG, TIFF or BMP format. A high resolution photo is necessary for proper viewing of your ad on the internet.

TEXT ARTICLE SUBMISSIONText articles can be submitted as email attachments or in a .DOC file (Microsoft Word).We do not pay for articles All articles (unsolicited & approved), we will publish at no charge.

CLASSIFIED ADVERTISINGWe offer a special classified section of all our E Magazines.If you would like to have a small ad or a breeder listing run for the entire year, this is for you!

CLUB SPECIALTYADVERTISINGWe offer discounts for Breed club Specialty ads.Advertise your upcoming Specialty & send us photos & results and we will put together a multiple page photo spread in the very next month’s edition at NO cost! (You must advertise your specialty to get this free service) If you do not advertise your Specialty & still want photo collage pages, the rate is $35.00/page.

SUBSCRIBER INFOYou can subscribe for free directly on our website & receive the most recent news & information regarding our E Publications before the rest. If you have subscribed & are not receiving our monthly emails announcing our specials & new releases, check your Spam folder as our mail service may not be recognized by your email host & be filtered.
