Reflecting on God’s Word POWER IN PRESCRIBED RITUALS Joseph and Mary presented Jesus in the temple at eight days old, as was prescribed by Mosaic law. For many Catholic families, baptismal gowns were handed down through generations, and a baptism was a time of great celebration. Sadly, in our culture, baptisms continue to decline. There are many reasons for this: fewer practicing Catholics, more interfaith marriages, more secular weddings, fewer weddings by clergy, and problems or misunderstandings that turn people away. Many have left the church altogether because of the way they were treated. For some the parish is not a welcoming place. For others baptism has become just a ritual they go through for the sake of the grandparents.

EXAMPLES IN OUR ELDERS When someone does present a child for baptism, it can become too easy for others to pass judgment because the parents don’t know the rubrics well, or aren’t dressed better, or “why is that single mother having her baby baptized during Mass?” Notice that the Gospel says nothing about the priests of the temple and how they received Jesus. Rather it talks about Simeon and Anna. They are worth a study in themselves. Simeon is a devout man who is there waiting for a particular sign, and it is fulfilled when he see the Christ Child. Anna is just in the temple praying, as is her custom. After the presentation of Jesus, she does what she does best—she goes back to praying in the temple. Perhaps these readings teach us how we as a faith community can see the sacredness in those families presenting their children for baptism, and welcome them as did Anna and Simeon. Reflexionemos sobre la Palabra de Dios EL PODER DE LOS RITUALES PRESCRITOS José y María presentaron a Jesús en el Templo a los ocho días, como prescribía la Ley de Moisés. Para muchas familias católicas, el ropón del bautismo pasaba de generación en

generación y la celebración del Bautismo era esplendida. Lamentablemente, en nuestra cultura, los bautismos están disminuyendo. Hay muchas razones para que esto esté pasando, hay pocas personas que practican su catolicismo, más matrimonios interreligiosos, se realizan más matrimonios civiles y menos en la Iglesia también hay problemas o malentendidos que alejan a las personas. Muchos católicos han abandonado por completo a la Iglesia debido a la forma en cómo fueron tratados. Para algunos la parroquia no es un lugar donde son bienvenidos. Para otras personas, el Bautismo se ha convertido en solo un ritual que tienen que hacer por la ocasión del compadrazgo de los padrinos.

EL EJEMPLO EN NUESTROS MAYORES Cuando alguien presenta a un bebé o niño para su bautismo, algunas personas podrían juzgar fácilmente esta situación ya sea porque los padres no conocen bien las respuestas o no están bien vestidos, o “¿por qué esa madre soltera pide el Bautismos para su bebé durante la Misa?” Pon atención que el Evangelio no dice nada acerca de la forma cómo los sacerdotes recibieron a Jesús; por el contrario, habla de Simeón y Ana. Ellos merecen una reflexión aparte. Simeón es un hombre devoto que está ahí esperando una señal especial, que él ve cumplida cuando ve al Niño Jesús. Ana solo está orando en el Templo, como acostumbraba. Después de la presentación de Jesús, ella hace lo mejor que sabe hacer, ella regresa a orar al Templo. Quizá estas lecturas nos enseñan cómo siendo una comunidad de fe puede ver lo sagrado en aquellas familias que piden el Bautismo para sus hijos, y los reciben como Ana y Simeón. ¡Qué todos aprendamos de su sabiduría!

DSF-2020 -- Closing the Gap! Diocesan Services Fund for 2020

It’s been a while since we talked about the Diocesan Services Fund (DSF), but we’re

coming to the end of the year and we have to. Our 2020 DSF Campaign started great – until COVID-19 hit and everything changed.

For many of us our sources of income diminished, or stopped. Bills at St. Cyril continued to arrive, like all the rest of us, but our source of income dropped seriously. Like many other families and churches we had to focus on bringing in enough money to be able to do the fundamental work of our St. Cyril parish: Mass,

Confessions, Passing on the Faith, Upkeep of our Building, etc.

Our own parish needs have not changed or diminished as we approach the end of the year. But we also, as a parish, have an obligation to the larger church, our Archdiocese. Each year we address that need through

our contributions to the Diocesan Services Fund (DSF). DSF supports more than 60 ministries and programs that serve the faithful of the Archdiocese and us too, here at St. Cyril

This year, Cardinal DiNardo has assessed our parish DSF Goal at $177,000. So far you have contributed $109,282 towards this goal – Thank You!!Thank You!!Thank You!!!!!

We still have $67,718 to raise.

I know that we are in difficult economic times, and we have been challenged to give in all kinds of ways, yet each of us has been blessed in so many ways, and we are called to share those blessings with others. We

missed our DSF goal for 2019 by approximately $17,000, which we had to pay out of our operating budget.

This year we need the help of everyone so let’s pray and then give, in order to Close the GapClose the GapClose the Gap.

DSF-2020 -- ¡Reducir la diferencia! Fondo de Servicios Diocesanos - 2020

Hace un tiempo hablamos sobre el Fondo de Servicios Diocesanos (DSF), pero como nos

estamos acercando al final del año, tenemos que hablar de nuevo. Nuestra campaña DSF 2020 inicio muy bien, hasta que llegó el COVID-19 y todo cambió.

Para muchos de nosotros, las fuentes de ingresos disminuyeron o se detuvieron. Las facturas en San Cirilo siguieron llegando y nuestra fuente de ingresos se redujo seriamente. Como muchas de las familias e iglesias,

tuvimos que enfocarnos en obtener el dinero suficiente para poder llevar a cabo el trabajo primordial de nuestra parroquia de San Cirilo: como la misa, confesiones, transmisión de la fe, mantenimiento de nuestro edificio, etc.

A medida que nos acercamos al final del año, las necesidades parroquiales no han cambiado ni disminuido. Como parroquia, también tenemos una obligación con la iglesia en nuestra Arquidiócesis. Cada año abordamos esta necesidad a través de nuestras contribuciones al Fondo de Servicios Diocesanos (DSF). DSF apoya a más de 60

QUÉ SIGNIFICA EL CARES ACT PARA DAR CARIDADES

La Ley de Ayuda, Alivio y Seguridad Económica por el Coronavirus ha creado cambios temporales en el procedimiento fiscal de tales donaciones. Una de ellas es una deducción estándar general de 90 +% dirigida principalmente a los contribuyentes , y las otras restantes están destinadas a incentivar a los

donadores corporativos de altos ingresos.

9 de cada 10 personas que ya no detallan específicamente sus donaciones caritativas, CARES Act les permitirá a estos contribuyentes individuales a deducir sus donaciones a organizaciones benéficas hasta $300 en su reporte de impuestos federales del 2020, a pesar que se toman la deducción estándar. Los contribuyentes casados que presenten una declaración conjunta obtendrán una deducción de hasta $ 600.

WHAT THE CARES ACTS MEANS FOR CHARITABLE GIVING

The Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act creates two temporary changes to the tax treatment of such donations. One is a universal

deduction targeted primarily at the 90+% of standard deduction taxpayers, and the other is

meant to incentivize the remaining high-income givers and corporations.

For the 9 out of 10 people who no longer itemize their charitable giving, the CARES Act will allow these individual taxpayers to deduct donations to charity of up to $300 on their 2020 federal tax return, even though they take the standard deduction. Married-filing-jointly taxpayers will get an above-the-line deduction of up to $600. For those donors who are still able to itemize their deductions, and therefore directly write off gifts to charity, the current deduction cap is 60% of adjusted gross income. Corporations are able to deduct charitable donations up to 10% of taxable income. *The 60% of AGI limit is for giving to 501(c)(3) public charities. The deductibility of gifts to 501(c)(3) private foundations is capped at 30% and was not included in this legislation.

What about IRA Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCD)?

The CARES Act did not change the rules around the QCD, which allows individuals over 70½ years old to donate up

to $100,000 in IRA assets directly to charity1 annually, without taking the distribution into taxable income.

However, remember that under the CARES Act an individual can elect to deduct 100 percent of their AGI for

cash charitable contributions. This effectively affords individuals over 59½ years old the benefits similar to a QCD; they can take a cash distribution from their IRA,

contribute the cash to charity, and may completely offset tax attributable to the distribution by taking a charitable

deduction in an amount up to 100 percent of their AGI for the tax year.
