Dramatic Jump in Runners for 40th Honolulu Marathon

By Dr. Richard Kelley

Tomorrow morning, the biggest group of runners in 15 years will line up on Ala Moana Boulevard, just ‘Ewa of the Ala Moana Shopping Center, to start the 40th running of the Honolulu Marathon! It is a milestone event in many ways.

The first Honolulu Marathon, in 1973, had only 167 entrants. But its popularity soared rapidly, and in 1995, it attracted a record 34,434 runners. In 1997, there were 33,682 entrants but since then the number has generally been in the mid-20,000s. Photo Finish at this Year’s XTERRA Trail Run World Championships

By Nancy Daniels

Outrigger Hotels and Resorts has been a long-time sponsor of the XTERRA Trail Run World Championships held every first Sunday of December at Kualoa Ranch. In all those years, we’ve never had as close a finish as we did this year. As a matter of fact, it was so close that for the first time in event history, there was a tie! After reviewing several angles of video and photos, XTERRA race officials determined that Ben Bruce and Joe Gray crossed the finish line simultaneously after 21 grueling kilometers running through Ka‘a‘awa Valley and Hakipu‘u Valley and are officially the co-champions for 2012. In addition to the 21-kilometer World Championship course that took runners up hills and along flat valley trails, several stream crossings and some tight, twisty sections that can only be described as uniquely XTERRA, the day’s activities also included a 10K and 5K race, as well as a Keiki Sprint and an Adventure Walk. As a sponsor benefit, Outrigger receives a small number of complimentary race entries each year, which are made available to employees and their family members. Congratulations to this year’s team of participants who enjoyed a romp through Kualoa Ranch either on the 5K race or the Adventure Walk: Nancy Daniels, Dan Daniels, Loyce Hurley, Jenny Meyer, Kala Meyer, Lisa Asakura, Mark Hayes, Lianne Bryant, Frank Stepo, Ritche Albano, Sheila Ayson, Joanna Padilla and Kaycee Hansberry. Outrigger had a more visible presence at the event this year with the Outrigger team assisting in the Kids Zone tent, registering keiki for the Keiki Sprint and offering some fun, kid-friendly games to play. Mahalo to Milton Lafitaga and Kathy Hansberry for coordinating this effort and to volunteers Ritche Albano, Sheila Ayson, Joanna Padilla, Jayson Padilla and Kaycee Hansberry.

Team X-T.R.E.M.E A very moving component of the XTERRA Trail Run World Championships is the participation of Team X-T.R.E.M.E. This is an organization with an ongoing mission to Honor, Empower and Motivate wounded service members of the Iraq and Afghanistan campaigns. The team features active and veteran military members who participate in various races across the country to honor the sacrifice of Wounded Warriors through feats of mental and physical endurance. This is the third consecutive year that Team X-T.R.E.M.E. participated in the XTERRA run at Kualoa Ranch and the second year that Outrigger Hotels and Resorts assisted with their visit by hosting their accommodations. This year, the team was made up of eight members running in the 21K race, including two Wounded Warriors. In keeping with the team’s tradition, each member ran the entire course with gas masks secured to their faces. Also per tradition, the team skydived into the race site prior to the start and brought in another wounded veteran as their guest of honor. This year’s guest

of honor was Cpl. Josh Sams who lost both his legs to an improvised explosive device (IED) in January while serving in Afghanistan. According to Jeremy Soles, founder and president of Team X-T.R.E.M.E., “The XTERRA Trail Run World Championship in Hawai‘i is a pivotal element in our cycle of rehabilitation for wounded veterans. Not only are these warriors immersed in the excitement and beauty of paradise, they are also empowered by the XTERRA energy and through challenges they witness the team overcome at Kualoa Ranch. The wounded warriors leave Hawai‘i and the XTERRA/Team X-T.R.E.M.E. experience highly motivated, refreshed and focused on living life to the extreme.” Next year’s XTERRA Trail Run World Championship is scheduled for Sunday, December 1, at Kualoa Ranch. You’ve got a whole year to prepare! To get motivated, check out this year’s highlight video at http://bcove.me/m62l4ziv.

Kathy Carey Receives UH RecognitionBy Nancy Daniels

On Saturday, November 24, Kathy Carey received the 2012 Charlie Ushijima Award from the University of Hawai‘i (UH) Athletics Department during the UH-UNLV football game at Aloha Stadium. This prestigious award, named after it’s first recipient, the late Charlie Ushijima, honors an outstanding volunteer who has given his/her time to

help further the University’s athletics programs. Kathy has done that and so much more in her role as Assistant Coach to the Women’s Soccer Team, being an integral member of the coaching staff as well as a stalwart mentor to the many young women athletes who have been part of the soccer program over the years. Former Outrigger ‘ohana member and current Head Women’s Soccer

Coach Michele Nagamine said, “Kathy has faithfully served the women’s soccer program since 1992 and spends countless hours per week organizing travel, managing equipment ordering and maintenance, booster club issues and budgeting. She works hard every day, always has a smile on her face and we would not be the same program without her!” Kathy was in good company, with Wes Yonamine also receiving kudos for his incredible help to Rainbow Baseball for over the past decade as point man for Duane Kurisu’s Grand Slam Club Cooking Crew and as the organizer and supervisor of UH’s annual Youth League Tournament. Acting Athletics Director Rockne Freitas said Kathy and Wes’ “… tireless efforts enable us to compete and win both in the classroom and on the field of play…” On hand to celebrate Kathy’s recognition were her husband David, Drs. Chuck and Jenny Kelley, Connor Carey, Mary Colleen Kelley and husband Judd Klinger and a stadium full of UH fans! Congratulations, Kathy!Drs. Dramatic Jump in Runners for 40th Honolulu Marathon

The substantial increase in the number of participants is predicted to have a significant economic impact on Hawai‘i. The race will generate income on the order of $120 million, up dramatically over the estimated $107 million generated last year. Moreover, the economic benefits are not limited to Honolulu, but are spread throughout Hawai‘i since roughly one in every five out-of-state registrants plans to visit neighbor islands too. Dr. Barahal is rightly proud when he points out that the Honolulu Marathon is self-supporting. Unlike some other major sporting events in Hawai‘i such as the Pro Bowl, the Honolulu Marathon does not ask for or receive any taxpayer support. It enlists private sponsors to help, and with registration fees, it pays for its operations, advertising and promotion, over 400 special-duty police, park use and cleanup, road barricading and cleanup, and the use of the Hawai‘i Convention Center. Thanks to the large number of elite runners participating, the 40th Honolulu Marathon should be particularly exciting.

• Thesecond-fastestmarathonerinworldhistory,WilsonKipsang of Kenya, the 2012 Olympic Bronze Medalist, will be attacking the Honolulu course record of 2:11:12. While some of the world’s “super-elite” runners are said to skip the Honolulu Marathon because of Hawai‘i’s heat and humidity, Kipsang decided to run here after the New York City Marathon – which he was favored to win – was cancelled, just 40 hours before the race was due to start, after Superstorm Sandy struck. Kipsang’s 2:03:42 victory in Frankfurt in September 2011 is just four seconds behind the all-time world marathon record.

• RightbesideKipsangwillbeKenya’sJimmyMuindi, whoholds the Honolulu Marathon’s record time of 2:11:12 and has won the race here seven times!

• WearingBibF1willbeWoynishetGirmaofEthiopa,whowon the women’s division last year with a time of 2:31:41.

• SvetlanaZakharovaofRussia,athree-timeHonoluluMarathon winner, once with a personal best time of 2:28:34, will try for her fourth win.

Elkanah Odembo, Kenya’s ambassador to the United States, will be a special guest in Waikīkī to cheer on the large number of runners from his country. Outrigger Hotels and Resorts and OHANA Hotels and Resorts are the Official Hotels of the Honolulu Marathon, and we proudly provide rooms for all the elite runners at Outrigger Reef on the Beach as our contribution to this important community event. According to General Manager Bill Comstock, the Reef is also hosting legendary long distance runner Frank Shorter, who won the marathon gold medal at the 1972 Olympics. Known as the “father of the American running boom,” he has run the Honolulu Marathon 19 times. Although he never won it, Shorter has been a champion of its reputation since 1974, acting as a race broadcaster and celebrity guest signer at numerous Honolulu Marathon Expos, according to www.honolulumarathon.org. At the finish line, only a handful of competitors are hailed as winners, but in reality, everybody in Hawai‘i wins when the Honolulu Marathon races into town. Thanks to Dr. Jim Barahal and all the staff and volunteers of the Honolulu Marathon for everything you do for our state year after year.
