-Father George

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Today is the second of week of Advent, and we are moving closer to Christmas. As Christmas draws near, we need to prepare ourselves fully. When an important guest is coming to your house; what do you do? First, you make sure that the house and all the rooms are organized. We want to make sure that our guest will have a good time while visiting. In the same way we prepare to welcome guests in our houses, we need also to prepare for the coming of the Son of God. Jesus wants to come into our hearts, and if He is coming to your heart, will He find you ready to receive him? Advent is the time to antici-

pate and expect the coming of the Son of God. The spirit of Advent is expressed well in the parable of the bridesmaids who are anxiously awaiting the coming of the Bridegroom (Matt 25:1-13). There is profound joy at the Bridegroom’s expected coming. Yet, a warning of the need for preparation echoes through the parable. Like Lent, Advent is a prepara-tory season. It has significance because it is a season of looking forward and waiting for something greater: both for the annual celebration of the event of Christ's birth, and for the time when Christ will come again. Brothers and sisters in Christ, let us prepare our hearts, Let us remove all the obstacles that make it difficult to find room in our hearts. We can prepare our hearts by going to confession and asking God to forgive our sins and by promising Him that with the help of His grace we can try to avoid the next occasions. Within this second week of Advent, also falls the solemnity of the Immaculate Conception on December 8th. It’s important to understand what the doctrine of the Immaculate Conception is and what it is not. Some people think the term refers to Christ’s conception in Mary’s womb without the intervention of a human father, but that is the Virgin Birth. Others think the Immaculate Conception means Mary was conceived "by the power of the Holy Spirit," in the way Jesus was, but that, too, is incorrect. The Immaculate Conception means that Mary, whose conception was brought about the normal way, was conceived without original sin or its stain. That is what "immaculate" means: without stain. The essence of original sin consists in the deprivation of sanctifying grace, and its stain is a corrupt nature. Mary was preserved from these defects by God’s grace. From the first instant of her existence, she was in the state of sanctifying grace and was free from the corrupt nature which original sin brings. God bless you during this season!

Feast of the

Immaculate Conception Tuesday, December 8 Mass at 7:00 PM

This holy day with obligation is in cele-

bration of Mary Immaculate Con-ception which is to say that from the moment of HER conception she was free from original sin. This celebra-tion is all about Mary’s conception in the womb of her own mother, Anne. This is not a feast of the con-ception of Jesus! More to the point, we see how Mary placed herself ful-ly in God’s hands throughout her life.

Our Living Word: For Reflection

Take time each week to reflect upon the CURRENT Sunday’s Scripture. We are fed by the Word so we can live out the Word.

NOVEMBER 29, 2015 - FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT

• That area in my life in which I must respond to John’s call to “repentance’ is . . .

• Salvation (to me) looks like . . . feels like . . . sounds like . . .

Each week “introductions” to the 1st and 2nd Readings for the Upcoming Sunday are offered. Their sole purpose is to help us all of us “receive” and “hear” the word of God. DECEMBER 6, 2015 - 2ND SUNDAY OF ADVENT

First Reading: Zephaniah 3:14-18

The days of the prophet Zephaniah were bad times for Israel because of their idolatry and unfaithfulness to the law. Zephaniah preached impend-ing judgment, a day of doom. But in the end, he tells them of a day when they will sing for joy, and the Lord will sing joyfully over them

Second Reading: Philippians 4:4-7

Of all the communities founded by Paul, the one at Philippi was his fa-vorite. Toward the end of his letter to them, he advises them how to live as they await Christ’s return in glory.

Every Tuesday at 9:30 am here at St. Catherine of Siena- St. Lucy’s Rectory.

And Let It Begin With Me...

If a murder is committed privately it is considered a crime. But if it happens with the authority of the state, they call it courage. —St. Cyprian

“Time Table Talk” for families—(“Families” are what you define family to be!)

There are many “things” a family (any size!) can be doing especially for the Season of Advent. ‘Tis the season of giving, yes, But it is also a time for that experience which is somehow eluding our culture today: Q U I E T. How do we bring some quiet into these culturally hectic days? For Advent we could introduce or reintro-duce a ritual which is really a “domestic church” (meaning: home!) ritual------even though we experience it in the church. Yes, that’s right: the Advent wreath. Make a simple wreath of greens, real or artificial and place it in a prominent place in your home. Add four candles: three purple, one pink. You don’t have to buy special candles! Why not wrap a pink ribbon around one of your candles and a purple ribbon around the remaining three? Choose a time of day when you (and your family) can light one candle each week. The first two weeks are purple candles, the third week is the pink candle, the fourth week is the final purple candle. Reflect on what is going on in your personal life. The glow of a candle leads us to be reflec-tive. Take time. Take quiet! End the period with a simple call: “Come Lord Jesus, come!”

Give Central allows our parish to provide its parishioners a safe and convenient way to make regular, automatic electronic contributions and can also be used be used for special events and other collec-tions.

We understand that most transac-tions today are done electronically. We want to provide you with that same convenient option at church.

Attention Lectors !

The Church Year, Cycle B, is coming to an end. The new Church Year Cycle "C" (the Gospel of Luke) begins today the 1st Sunday of Advent.

The Lector Workbooks have been available in the sacristy for several weeks now. If your haven't taken one, your Lector Workbook for the new Church Year is waiting for you in the sacristy.

Thank you for your wonderful minis-try to this Faith Community.

Please Give It Some Thought

We all know that a well-run home re-quires the help of all who dwell within the house. Our parish home, the church, is in need of help from ALL who dwell within each weekend for worship. If you are not already in-volved (!) with a ministry, please con-sider doing the following:

A. Determine which ministry in which you could participate: Altar Server, Lector, Eucharistic Minister.

B. For the time being, simply WATCH how someone in that minis-try carries out that ministry.

C. You’ll eventually say to yourself: “I can do that!”

In January 2016 we’ll begin having training for each ministry IMMEDI-ATELY FOLLOWING each weekend Mass. No weeknight or Saturday train-ings! Think of it: free weeknights! Give it some thought.

December 12th: Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe!

Did you know that Mary, under the title of Our Lady of Guadalupe is the patron-ess of all the Americas?

This celebration recalls Mary’s appearing to the elderly native Juan Diego (now St. Juan Diego) on a hill (Tepeyac, in the city of Mexico City) from December 9th through the 12th in year 1531. In the Aztec language she is known as Tecoatlaxope (de Guadalupe in Spanish), which means “she will crush the serpent of stone.” What a wonderfully joyous feast!

The Christmas Bazaar was a success because of all of the people who were the Village who made it happen. With-out you, there would have been no prizes for the Big Raffle, the Silent Auction, the Jar Raffle or the Pick-A-Prize Raffle. And all who worked for many months in advance of the two-day event - Derrick Allen, Jim Bow-ers, Jeanette Cannon, Barbara Cragg, Bernice Douglas, Kathy Feulner, Carol Frank, Etta Gardner, Katya Godina, Ginny Jones, Donna Kanapes, Peggy Kell, the Kitchen crew, Pat Koko, Don Kumler, Kim and Grace McGuire, Pat Nelson, Frances Page, Elaine Podraza, Amanda Pomareda, the Quilters, Sue Schouten, Erica Seltzer, the Shoevlin Family, Madonna Sloan, Rosetta Smith, Ten Thousand Villages, Cynthia Weaver, Bern and Marie Wheel - as well as those who helped set it up, worked at the event itself and cleaned/packed up afterward.
