Sisters Uptown Bookstore held its annual Kwanzaa celebration on Sat., Dec. 28.

The family-oriented event featured African drumming and storytelling by Atiba Wilson, a children’s craft making session, and was hosted by Priestess Nettie Paisley.

It served to mark Ujima, the third day of Kwanzaa, which honors the principle of collective work and responsibility.

Founded in 2000 by Janifer P. Wilson and Kori N. Wilson, Sisters Uptown Bookstore specializes in books from across the African diaspora. The store also serves as a community resource hub for arts, literature, and culture.

“Our motto is ‘knowledge is key,’” explain the founders on their site. “We provide an educational, emotional, spiritual, and loving environment for our diverse community where all are welcomed.”

Phragmites, also known as the common reed, is a tall perennial grass. It is found in wetlands, riparian areas, shorelines, and other wet areas such as roadside ditches. In the summer of 2018, New York City police offi cer Michael J. Reynolds broke into a Nashville home adjacent to his Airbnb and terrorized the family of fi ve living there. Conese Halliburton was asleep with her four young sons when offi cer Reynolds kicked down her door in the middle of the night and threatened the family. The offi cer even had the audacity to call them “fucking n---ers.” The entire troubling altercation was caught on video. Halliburton immediately called the police but even though Reynolds was questioned that night, he was not arrested until days later. Earlier this month, Reynolds was sentenced to 15 days in jail and 3 years probation. To add insult to injury, he still works at the 33rd Precinct in Washington Heights. It is unconscionable that an unstable racist such as offi cer Reynolds be allowed to work in a neighborhood as diverse as ours.

The popular BET series Finding has a really cool episode on Washington Heights’ own Mims, who was ubiquitous in the late 2000’s due to his megahit “This Is Why I’m Hot.”The video tells the story of the massive tune and Mims attempt to navigate the treacherous music industry.

I’m a Kindergarten teacher, so I’m uniquely qualifi ed to judge

Donald Trump’s behavior.

If Donald Trump was in my classroom (which he should be), he would get a sad news note home every day.

Let’s imagine Donald Trump in my Kindergarten class. We have clear rules governing the behavior of our children, who range in age from four to six, because everyone has to learn to be nice.

For instance, if Trump had a disagreement with another boy, then called him “human scum” in response, that child would instantly raise his hand, then tell me about this terrible insult.

Little Donald would have to say he’s sorry, which he refuses to do. Then he would have to change his behavior card from green, which is good, to yellow, a fi rst warning.

I ask little Donald why he said that. He just crosses his arms and glares at me.

My classroom is fi lled with children from all over the world. We have children from Mexico, Ecuador, Yemen, Bangladesh and other countries.

When little Donald says he doesn’t like Muslims, I ask him why. He says, “They’re terrorists.”

When little Donald says he thinks immigrants are bringing drugs and crime

to the country, I ask him, “Where is your evidence?” He won’t be able to give me any, claiming instead, “People are saying that.”

When little Donald says he just knows that immigrants are bad, I ask him if he would like to be called names. He screams out, “I’m white and I’m perfect! Nobody can call me names!”

I say, as I have many times to my students, “If you don’t like it, don’t do it to somebody else.”

This doesn’t matter to Little Donny. His next move is to grab another child and drag

him to our time-out bench in the corner of the room, then say, “I’m putting you in a cage because you’re bad and don’t belong here.”

That child will cry out and I have to intervene to get the child out of the cage Donald has built.

But little Donald does it again, this time building a wall of chairs and blocks around the child trapped on the time-out bench.

Then Donald gets another warning, and must change his card to orange to indicate the second warning.

When little Donny calls a boy from Mexico a “rapist,” the boy complains he doesn’t know what that means, but he knows it’s bad.

When little Donny grabs a girl on the behind and smiles, making the girl cry, I tell Donny to change his behavior card to red (that means a sad news note home) and call the school social worker.

The social worker is Hispanic. Little Donny doesn’t like that. He says the social worker cannot be fair because she’s

A united front.

Black and Jewish community leaders and elected offi cials gathered in solidarity on Monday to express unity in the wake of an anti-Semitic hate crime in a Rockland County.

On Saturday evening, December 28, a machete-wielding man injured fi ve people after entering a rabbi’s home during a Hanukkah celebration in the town of Monsey, located about 25 miles from New York City. It capped a week during which featured several other incidents in the city, which are being investigated as hate crimes.

At a press conference at his National Action Network headquarters in Harlem, Reverend Al Sharpton, who organized the gathering, said it was important for the black community to speak out against anti-Semitism the same as it would against attacks on blacks.

“We cannot remain silent as we see a consistent pattern of attacks against people based on their faith and based on who they are,” remarked Sharpton.

“You can’t fi ght hate against you unless you’re willing to fi ght hate against everyone else,” he said. “You cannot be anti-hate and pro-civil rights only one way.”

Noting that black suspects have been charged with several recent anti-Semitic attacks, including the one in Monsey, Sharpton said the black community must denounce the

crimes to avoid reviving old tensions between blacks and Jews in New York City.

“We rise to say that we will not be silent, and that we condemn any attacks, any hate crimes, any eff orts by anyone to try in any way impede the continuing move to heal whatever we have tried to heal,” said Sharpton, pointing out that black and Jewish leaders have strived to reduce animosity between the communities.

Grafton Thomas, a 37-year-old black man, was arrested in Harlem about an hour after the attack. He drove from Monsey over the George Washington Bridge into Manhattan, where he was apprehended by the police.

“This will not set us back,” Sharpton said of the incident.

Thomas is a resident of Greenwood Lake, where he lives with his mother, police said. He has pled not guilty to fi ve counts of attempted murder.

On Monday, federal authorities fi led hate crime charges against Thomas after authorities reportedly discovered anti-Semitic entries in a journal found in his home.

After his arrest, the Thomas family issued a statement explaining that he has a history of mental illness.

“Grafton Thomas has a long history of mental illness and hospitalizations,” the

statement said. “He has no history of like violent acts and no convictions for any crime. He has no known history of anti-Semitism and was raised in a home which embraced and respected all religions and races. He is not a member of any hate group.”

“Let’s be clear: This was an act of domestic terrorism, and we must and will take strong action to keep this vile cancer of hate from spreading,” said Governor Andrew Cuomo in a statement.

Applications are open for the 2020 Urban Fellows Program.

The program, open to recent college graduates, is a nine-month government fellowship that exposes fellows to urban issues impacting public policy and decision-making in New York City. The program combines work in mayoral offi ces and city agencies with volunteer service opportunities and a seminar series.

“The Urban Fellows Program off ers a pathway for recent college graduates to enter a career in public service,” said Lisette Camilo, Commissioner of the NYC Department of Citywide Administrative Services. “Now more than ever, our city needs bright and talented people who are committed to serving others and making a diff erence in our communities.”

Urban Fellows come from diverse backgrounds and learn fi rsthand how to create systemic change and help strengthen local government. Areas of policy learning include economic development, environmental health and sustainability, the criminal justice system, and education.

This highly competitive program includes a hands-on learning approach to public policy. Participants learn directly from city offi cials and senior leaders and are also provided the opportunity to work on City

Mexican, even though she’s an American citizen.

When little Donny brings a lump of coal to school, then lights it on fi re on the alphabet carpet in the middle of the classroom, I stamp it out, then call the Principal.

The Principal is Hispanic. Donny doesn’t like that either.

Our security guards, who are also Hispanic and female, walk into the room and surround Donny. He tells them to go back to their own country. “I’m American,” one of them says.

The maintenance men, all Hispanic, clean up the mess Donny made with the coal in the middle of the carpet.

Little Donny freaks out. He is surrounded by Hispanic and Muslim people, who are all American citizens. He cannot comprehend this fact.

“I will blow up the country, if you don’t leave me alone!” he screams.

The security guards try to escort Donny out of the room. He throws a big bag of oil in their faces.

Despite that insult, their faces soiled, they maintain their dignity and professional sense of responsibility, and carry him out, as Donny kicks and screams that he’s not being treated fairly.

“It’s all so unfair!” he yells hysterically.We don’t see Donny again for the rest of

the year.Next September, on the fi rst day of school,

little Donny walks back into my classroom, surrounded by beefy bodyguards wearing long white robes and holding AR-15 semi-automatic rifl es, with a “Trump White

House” logo on the sleeves.I am stunned to see him, but there he is, in

his little red tie, brown shirt and short pants wearing shiny, black military boots, his over-long, windswept hair hooking over the collar, his face make-up as orange as a Halloween horror pumpkin, looking as insolent and angry as ever.

It is suddenly clear to me. Donald Trump must repeat the grade.

He has failed Kindergarten.

Schneier said that Sharpton had organized a group of clergy and civil rights leaders to discuss ways to stem the rise in anti-Semitism.

“Casual Jews become Jewish casualties,” said Schneier. “We cannot fight our battles alone.”

State Assemblymember Michael Blake, who attended the press conference, issued a statement calling for federal and local actions to curtail hate crimes.

“Congress must pass legislation to declare domestic terrorism a crime to ensure that all tools are made available to combat these threats,” Blake said. “The wave of anti-Semitic attacks and violence against places of faith is an increasingly dangerous threat to every single one of us and must be addressed by the U.S Department of Justice. Therefore, DOJ should conduct an emergency review of all definitions of hate crimes and a comprehensive investigation into the patterns of these senseless actions.

She said that more should be done to provide mental health treatment, as well as teaching tolerance in New York schools.

“When adults set a good — or bad — example, we all know, children will listen,” she said.

There have been 214 anti-Semitic hate crimes so far in 2019, according to NYPD statistics.

Lieberman suggested that that reducing segregation in schools and neighborhoods could help increase tolerance.

“We live in a melting pot society, but we live isolated lives — racially, ethnically, we deal with our own people,” she said. “It’s time to build some bridges, and that’s hard work.”

Don’t ask, don’t tell.

Eff ective January 6, employers in New York State can no longer ask job applicants about their salary history.

The new law — which pertains to all employers in the state, both private and public — makes it illegal to ask applicants for their salary history during the job interview process, or a current employee as a condition for promotion.

It also prevents employers from seeking similar information from other sources.

Applicants and employees can voluntarily provide salary history information so long as it is without prompting from the employer.

The law was passed in 2019 as part of Governor Andrew Cuomo’s Women’s Justice Agenda to help close the gender wage gap.

“New York continues to be a leader in the fi ght for economic justice and advancing equality for women in the workplace,” said Cuomo in a statement. “The salary history ban reinforces our commitment to breaking down the barriers that have hindered women for far too long.”

In 2017, a similar law went into eff ect at the city level, as the New York City Council passed a bill making it illegal for public and private employers of any size in New York

City to ask about an applicant’s salary history during the hiring process. New York City became the fi rst municipality in the nation to enact such a law.

That same year, Cuomo directed the Department of Labor to study the causes and impact of the gender pay gap in New York State and issue policy recommendations to help close it. As part of the study, the agency conducted pay equity hearings in New York City, Syracuse, Long Island and Buff alo to solicit testimony identifying specifi c causes of the gender wage gap and suggestions on ways in which the wage gap can be closed.

Nationally, women earn 80 cents for every dollar men earn, according to data from the U.S. Census Bureau.

“This law is another critical step toward reaching full gender equality and equitable pay for all. While New York currently has the narrowest wage gap in the nation, with women earning the equivalent of 89 cents to a man’s dollar, that’s still an unacceptable gap,” said New York State Department of Labor Commissioner Roberta Reardon. “We have more work to do. This will help our state to move more quickly toward closing that gender wage gap and breaking this discriminatory cycle.”
