Christmas at St. Justin’s

Christmas Masses -- Many thanks to every-one who helped prepare for and participated in our Christmas liturgies, including the Dea-cons, Ushers, Lectors, Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion, Altar Servers, Choirs, Cantors, Musicians, the Children’s Mass participants and organizers, the mainte-nance crew, cleaning and laundry crew, the environment / decorating crew, those who donated flowers, the Liturgy Committee, and the office staff.

We are also grateful to those who attended our Christmas Masses, whether a regular parishioner or visitor, for their presence shows us a reflection of our Universal Church. Because of the donations received on this day as well as throughout the year, St. Justin Martyr Parish continues to be able to serve His people. We also remember and thank all those who since 1958 have come to St. Justin Church and supported its mission.

Special thanks to our priests, who because of their life’s commitment to their vocation, enable us to attend Mass and receive the sacraments therefore allowing us to live and grow in our Faith.

SALVATION IN DAILY LIFE This Sunday is the feast of the Holy Family, which comes on the

first Sunday after Christmas Day. Today’s feast celebrates how the hu-manity of Jesus (including his entire family life) has brought saving sig-nificance into the daily rhythms of our human family life.

The scriptures offer instruction and encouragement on how to share—within our families, parish families, and the wider human fami-ly—the love that God shares with us in Jesus. Selections from Sirach, Psalm 128, and Colossians encourage us to reflect divine love and thus find holiness in all our human relationships. The reading from Matthew’s Gospel offers a living example of love in the actions Joseph took to pro-tect his young family from danger and to nurture them within the larger family of faith of their time. SAINT THOMAS BECKET (1118-1170) December 29

To anyone who imagines conflict between religion and politics to be a modern phenomenon, history witnesses otherwise. Martyred under Henry VIII in 1535, Thomas More declared, “I die the king’s good serv-ant, but God’s first!” Thomas Becket could have said the same four cen-turies earlier. As Henry II’s closest friend and trusted chancellor, Becket, the king presumed, could be counted on, if made archbishop, to deliver the church to royal control. But Becket experienced a profound conver-sion, confirmed by the ordination liturgy’s rich symbolism of the bishop as Good Shepherd and the church as Bride of Christ. Renouncing secular responsibilities, distributing his wealth to the poor, Thomas became the church’s uncompromising champion. Faced with this “new” Becket, the king’s previous friendship turned into a ferocious, almost irrational ha-tred. As eight centuries later, Archbishop Romero would be martyred at the altar of Christ’s sacrifice, Becket was slain before the altar of Canter-bury Cathedral by royal agents, neither the first nor last good shepherd to lay down his life as the price of freedom for Christ’s church and justice for Christ’s sheep. —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament

January 3-4 (and the First Friday of every month):

At the conclusion of our Friday 8:30 a.m. Mass, a consecrated host, the Body of Christ, is placed in a monstrance, which is a liturgical vessel made to hold and expose the consecrated host. The mon-strance is placed on the altar along with some candle sconces. It remains there throughout the day and night until 8 a.m. on Saturday morning.

This offers an opportunity to spend some quiet time in front of Our Lord, in prayer, reflection, ven-eration, and devotion. Stop in the church any time, day or night, during our Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament.

Rembrandt, the Dutch painter known for his mas-terful contrast of light and shadow, portrayed the Baby Jesus with an illuminating glow that seems to reflect the realm of God. Mary, Joseph, and other figures are also portrayed, somewhat in the shadows. This golden radiance suggests a rever-ence, love, amazement, and peace, all emanating from the newborn child.

Our priests do not so-licit funds for personal reasons, especially by email or text mes-sages. These scams are not only affecting our parish, they have been affecting many in our diocese. Most are getting the priests’ names from our websites. They use a priest’s name to try to get you to give them money or gift cards. Do not fall for this. If you are contacted by one of these scammers, please notify the office.

Parishioners Craig and Rene Chambers are handling our par-ish recycling program. We ask that you save aluminum cans, glass bottles, and plastic containers and give them to the church. The Chambers’ will drive them to the recycling center, and give the money received to our parish’s St. Vincent de Paul program. Please bring your recyclables to the SVDP room (at the end of the shelter) on the second and fourth Saturdays of the month from 8-10 a.m. If you are unable to bring your recyclables to the church, the Chambers’ will go to your home and pick them up. SANTO TOMÁS BECKET (1118-1170) 29 de diciembre Tomás Becket se distinguió por su inteligencia y rápido ascenso durante el reinado

de Enrique II de Inglaterra. Como canciller, en ausencia del rey, estuvo al mando del reino. No obstante, Enrique II era ambicioso y quería a la Iglesia bajo su dominio, fue por eso que le nombró como Arzobispo de Canterbury en 1162. Sin embargo, Tomás cambió radicalmente: renunció a la cancillería, vendió su mansión, dio el dinero a los pobres y se fue a un monasterio viviendo humildemente. Se opuso públicamente al rey y a sus intenciones de sometimiento de la Iglesia hasta que el mismo rey lo amenazó con la muerte, razón por la que se expatrió a Francia. Luego de una reconciliación tem-poral, el rey expresó su deseo de librarse del arzobispo y envió a una guardia real a que lo asesinaran, hecho que ocurrió en el altar mayor de la catedral mientras Tomás Becket celebraba la Eucaristía. Recientemente y en el transcurso de los últimos años hemos tenido algunos de nuestros feligreses contactados por medio de un correo electrónico, llamadas, y mensajes de texto, por personas deshonestas que se dicen ser representantes de los sacerdotes de nuestra parro-quia. Estas personas dicen que los están contactando de parte de uno de nuestros sacerdotes, y están pidiendo dinero o tarjetas de regalo para ayudar a alguna persona necesitada. ¡ESTO ES UNA ESTAFA! Nuestros sacerdotes no solicitan fondos por razones personales, especialmente por correo electrónico o mensajes de texto. Estas estafas no solo han afectado a nuestra parroquia, sino que han afecta-do a muchos en nuestra diócesis. La mayoría obtiene el nombre del sacerdote por nuestra página de internet. Utilizan el nombre del sacer-dote para tratar de obtener su dinero o tarjetas de regalo. No caigan en esta trampa. Si son contactados por estos estafadores, por favor de contactar la oficina.

REFLEXIONES SOBRE LA PALABRA Desde la perspectiva de Dios, todo se valora de un modo diferente

El Señor estima mucho la vida familiar, que se basa en la obediencia y el re-speto a los padres (PRIMERA LECTURA). San Pablo exhorta a los cristianos a vivir una vida familiar centrada en la paz y en el amor (SEGUNDA LEC-TURA). EL EVANGELIO narra ciertos episodios de la vida de la Sagrada Familia, junto con la intervención providencial de Dios y la varonil y perfecta obediencia de san José a los planes de Dios sobre su familia.

Eclesiástico (Sirácide) 3, 3-7. 14-17a El Señor honra al padre en los hijos y respalda la autoridad de la madre

sobre la prole. El que honra a su padre queda limpio de pecado; y acumula tesoros, el que respeta a su madre.

Quien honra a su padre, encontrará alegría en sus hijos y su oración será escuchada; el que enaltece a su padre, tendrá larga vida y el que obedece al Señor, es consuelo de su madre.

Hijo, cuida de tu padre en la vejez y en su vida no le causes tristeza; aunque se debilite su razón, ten paciencia con él y no lo menosprecies por estar tú en pleno vigor. El bien hecho al padre no quedará en el olvido y se tomará a cuenta de tus pecados.

De la carta del apóstol San Pablo a los Colosenses 3, 12-21 Hermanos: Puesto que Dios los ha elegido a ustedes, los ha consagrado a él y les ha dado su amor, sean compasivos, magnánimos, humildes, afables y pa-cientes. Sopórtense mutuamente y perdónense cuando tengan quejas contra otro, como el Señor los ha perdonado a ustedes. Y sobre todas estas virtudes, tengan amor, que es el vínculo de la perfecta unión.

Que en sus corazones reine la paz de Cristo, esa paz a la que han sido llamados, como miembros de un solo cuerpo. Finalmente, sean agradecidos.

Que la palabra de Cristo habite en ustedes con toda su riqueza. Enséñense y aconséjense unos a otros lo mejor que sepan. Con el corazón lleno de grati-tud, alaben a Dios con salmos, himnos y cánticos espirituales; y todo lo que digan y todo lo que hagan, háganlo en el nombre del Señor Jesús, dándole gra-cias a Dios Padre, por medio de Cristo.

Mujeres, respeten la autoridad de sus maridos, como lo quiere el Señor. Maridos, amen a sus esposas y no sean rudos con ellas. Hijos, obedezcan en todo a sus padres, porque eso es agradable al Señor. Padres, no exijan demasi-ado a sus hijos, para que no se depriman.

Evangelio Lectura del santo evangelio según san Mateo 2, 13-15, 19-23

Después de que los Magos partieron de Belén, el ángel del Señor se le apareció en sueños a José y le dijo: "Levántate, toma al niño y a su madre, y huye a Egipto. Quédate allá hasta que yo te avise, porque Herodes va a buscar al niño para matarlo".

José se levantó y esa misma noche tomó al niño y a su madre y partió para Egipto, donde permaneció hasta la muerte de Herodes. Así se cumplió lo que dijo el Señor por medio del profeta: De Egipto llamé a mi hijo.

Después de muerto Herodes, el ángel del Señor se le apareció en sueños a José y le dijo: "Levántate, toma al niño y a su madre y regresa a la tierra de Israel, porque ya murieron los que intentaban quitarle la vida al niño".

Se levantó José, tomó al niño y a su madre y regresó a tierra de Israel. Pero, habiendo oído decir que Arquelao reinaba en Judea en lugar de su padre, Herodes, tuvo miedo de ir allá, y advertido en sueños, se retiró a Galilea y se fue a vivir en una población llamada Nazaret. Así se cumplió lo que habían dicho los profetas: Se le llamará nazareno. Palabra del Señor.

A los ojos de la gente de Nazaret, María y José eran vistos como personas buenas, si, pero nada mas. En cambio, para el Padre del cielo, María era la Virgen Inmaculada y José un varón justo a sus ojos. Ambos con una misión fuera de lo ordinario: contribuir a que el niño creciera “en edad, sabiduría y gracia”. Dios ama a las familias y les encomienda una misión.

Pequeñas reflexiones

Influencia Católica continúa Él estaba abocado a ayudar a otros, pero porque estaba

primero conectado interiormente con el amor de su Padre. Una persona que desee ejercer un liderazgo cristiano sin Cristo, sin conectar por medio de la oración con Dios, solo está buscando saciarse a sí mismo y acumular cosas: cosas que se cuelgan, inflarse de posesiones y reconocimientos, de muchos seguidores y likes, y es entonces cuando el minis-terio o la misión que ejerce solo se convierte en una con-stante auto compensación afectiva, donde solo busca un reconocimiento social o el afecto encontrado en la ayuda al prójimo.

Cristo trataba a todos por igual. Siempre estaba dis-ponible para todos. Su misión era extender el reino de los cielos, pero salvando como prioridad a los pecadores, a los que no cumplían los preceptos. No dejaba pasar oportuni-dades. No criticaba, no acusaba, sólo se ganaba su confianza y ayudaba a todos por igual. Él les ofrecía su amistad sincera y los transformaba con su amor.

Cristo tenía una profunda vida de oración, para Él rezar era como respirar. A pesar de sus muchos pendientes se re-tiraba a la orilla de la montaña a rezar (Lc 5, 16). Cristo rezaba siempre, en cualquier momento y circunstancia de vida. Él además rezaba en silencio sin que nadie lo supiera pues no estaba buscando que dijeran “es que es un santo” o “mira qué buen católico es”. El líder cristiano que no reza es como un guía que no ve pero que pretende guiar a otros en su camino.

Cristo vivía con un constante espíritu de sacrificio. No se ilusionaba con las apariencias y los triunfos. Él aceptó y abrazó el silencioso sacrificio como el único camino de re-dención (Lc 22, 42). Cristo guiaba con el ejemplo. No sólo lo hacía con palabras. Él era el mismo donde estuviera, no tenía doble cara y tampoco presentaba delante de todos, la mejor cara de su moneda, y en su casa la peor cara de ella.

Cristo fue empático (Mc 8, 2), sentía honda y profunda-mente el sufrimiento de las personas. Se conmovía y hacía algo. Él no era indiferente pero no solo con el que le venía a pedir ayuda y consejo, sino con todos los que lo conocían y estaban a su alrededor. Continuará…..

rán sus pecados (Eclesiástico 3:2-6, 12-14). Salmo — Dichoso el que teme al Señor, y sigue sus caminos (Salmo 128 [127]).

Segunda lectura — Vivan una vida de amor sincero, sean agradecidos, hagan todo en el nombre del Señor Jesús; vivan en armonía (Colosenses 3:12-21).

Evangelio —José tomó a María y al niño de noche y se fueron a Egipto para escapar la persecución de Herodes (Mateo 2:13-15, 19-23).

SALVACIÓN EN LA VIDA DIARIA Este domingo es la fiesta de la Sagrada Familia que cae

en el primer domingo después del Día de Navidad. La fiesta de hoy celebra cómo la humanidad de Jesús (incluso toda su familia) ha dado significado salvífico a los quehaceres diari-os de nuestra propia vida familiar.

Las lecturas ofrecen instrucción y aliento sobre cómo compartir –dentro de nuestras familias, en la familia de la parroquia y en la más amplia familia humana– el amor que Dios comparte con nosotros en Jesús. Selecciones de Eclesiástico, del salmo 128 (127), y colosenses nos alientan a ser reflejo del amor divino y así encontrar la santidad en todas nuestras relaciones humanas. La lectura del Evangelio según Mateo ofrece un ejemplo vivo de amor en las medidas que José tomó para proteger a su joven familia del peligro y para que creciera dentro de la gran familia de fe de su época.
