Special Interest Group V11N12 Grand Computers Club
December 2019
This “Page Zero” is a place to present information related to the most current activities of the Grand Computers Club (GCC) and the New Technologies Special Interest Group (NT/SIG) in particular.
Our next meeting is scheduled for Thursday, December 19 from 3:30-5:00pm in the Computer Club Classroom. The topics are “Listen Everywhere and Demo of New Club Equipment”. We will explain and demonstrate the new hearing assistance equipment the Club purchased to help our members and audience have a better listening experience. We will also show and tell some of the new equipment purchased and install in the Club this year. This includes a 4K projector and 4K Blu-ray player.
The NT/SIG will continue to hold monthly meetings and support other club activities including Tech Help throughout the year. Topics for the our meetings through April 2020 are posted in the Open Use room and a printable brochure can be found on the NT/SIG web page.
We are currently planning additional activities and facilities for 2020. If you have any thoughts or questions regarding the New Technologies Special Interest Group, please contact me at the email address below.
As always, I encourage your ideas for topics and projects. If you would like to make a presentation at one of the meetings, please contact me at: [email protected]

Annie J. Easley April 23, 1933 – June 25, 2011
Computer Scientist Mathematician
Rocket Scientist
Annie J. Easley (April 23, 1933 – June 25, 2011) was an African-American computer scientist, mathematician, and rocket scientist. . She was a leading member of the team which developed software for the Centaur rocket stage[3], and was one of the first African-Americans to work as a computer scientist at NASA.
In 1955, she read a story in a local newspaper about twin sisters who worked for the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) as "computers". She applied for a job the next day, and was hired two weeks later - one of four African Americans of about 2500 employees. She began her career as a mathematician and computer engineer at the NACA Lewis Flight Propulsion Laboratory.
Her 34-year career included developing and implementing computer code that analyzed alternative power technologies, supported the Centaur high-energy upper rocket stage, determined solar, wind and energy projects, identified energy conversion systems and alternative systems to solve energy problems.[5] Her energy assignments included studies to determine the life use of storage batteries, such as those used in electric utility vehicles. Her computer applications have been used to identify energy conversion systems that offer the improvement over commercially available technologies.
She became an adept computer programmer, using languages like the Formula Translating System (Fortran) and the Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP) to support a number of NASA’s programs. She developed and implemented code used in researching energy-conversion systems, analyzing alternative power technology—including the battery technology that was used for early hybrid vehicles, as well as for the Centaur upper-stage rocket.
