November was a busy and exciting month! First, the screening of the documentary on November 2 nd at the Grand Haven Cinema 9 was amazing! The capacity crowd including Congressman Bill Huizenga and State Commander Barry Wood watched the first 100-years of the Charles A. Conklin American Legion Post 28, including what we do and who we are, come alive on the big screen! Producers Daniel Joel Deal and Dr. Chris Petras have done an incredible job! The television-ready cut is expected mid-December. Stay tuned for more details. After the screening, a building re-dedication and blessing of Post Officers, staff and building were conducted by Post 28 Chaplain, Duane Smith. Big thanks to JW's/J-Dubs for providing appetizers at the event and to Jumpin’ Java for donating the coffee and tea. Moving forward, we aim to keep the Post current, relevant and thriving - an exciting, yet daunting challenge. Future Commanders face challenges just like our Post founders did in maintaining positive momentum while-at-the-same-time generating contemporary and innovative ideas to serve veterans and our local community. I encourage all Legionnaires to attend our monthly membership meetings and share your ideas on the future of our Post. The sold-out Veterans Day Dinner at Post 28 was filled with honor and pride. Lifetime memberships were awarded to Past Commanders Ed Hekman and Chris Jarvis along with Post 28 Chaplain Duane Smith and Legionnaire Carl Lori. Big thanks to Redi Rental for providing beautiful linens. In keeping with the mission of the Legion Pillars, Youth and Americanism, Legionnaires of Post 28 participated in a series of Veterans Day events at area schools. Our alliance with local communities grows stronger each year with teachers and principals welcoming us into their schools to educate students about veterans and protocol/respect for our U.S. flag. Operation KP has so-far raised $130K! Groundbreaking for the kitchen renovation is scheduled early January 2020. Second Vice Commander Rick White is working with contractors on the kitchen renovation timeline. Looking for a unique holiday gift for friends and family? How about honoring a friend or loved one with a customized brass chair plaque? Or perhaps the new book by Dr. Chris Petras on the first 100-years of our Post? Commander Janet Member Highlights When I was a Junior in high school, I wanted to join the military ROTC after graduation with plans of attending Purdue University. Instead, I elected to go to a smaller college to play sports. Since that decision I've always had doubt.... SpotlightontheAuxiliaryRecentlyIspenttimewithsomeonethatmanyofyoualreadyknow,ourAuxiliaryExecutiveBoardMemberandVA&RChairwoman,PatBest.WhatIconcludedveryquicklyisthatPatisabsolutelypassionateabouttakingcareofpeople,especiallyveterans.Itbeganoutofnecessitywithherownparents,butthenevolvedintoacallingofchoice,andshehasbeenservingfaithfullysince2005whenshejoinedourAuxiliary.Shedescribesherselfasabitofarebel(withacause!),andherfunpersonalityaddsspicetoanygathering!HersisterLindaGieske(AuxiliaryHistorian)isPat'spartnerin"crime",andtogethertheymanagethepurchaseofitemsandassemblyofmorethan400awesomefruitplatesforlocalveteranseveryDecember.PatisahomegrownGrandHavengal,andherfamilyownedanurseryformanyyears.HerparentswereactivevolunteersinGrandHaven,includingtheirchurchandtheAmericanLegionPost28,whichisoneoftheirvaluablelegacies.HerGrandpaservedinWWI,andbecameamemberofPost28soonafteritwasorganized.Pat'sinspirationfortheLegionandservingveteransalsocamefromherdad.HestartedasaSALatPost28,andthenservedinWWIIasatruckdrivercarryingtroopsandsuppliestotheirdestination.Whenthewarended,hedrovehistruckintoaconcentrationcampandpickedupthesurvivorswhowereindireneedofmedicalhelp!WOW!!!Letthatsinkinforaminute...Icannotimaginethehorrorandimpactofwhatheencounteredinthatfinalbutcriticalmission!HelaterbecameamemberofthePost28HonorGuard.Pat'sparents’healthbegantodeclineintheearly2000's,andtheywenttoliveatGrandPines.However,theylovedWednesdaynightdinnersatthePost,andaftertheycouldnolongerdrive,eachofthefourkidswouldtaketurnsoncepermonthtobringthem!Welove"customers"likethat!!!Patconsidersitaprivilegetowork(withsisterLinda)onthe"fruitplates"everyyearsince2007.Therearesometastygoodiesbesidesfruitontheseawesomeplates,aswellasanattachedcardhand-signedbyLinda.In2007theydid90plates,andthisyearPatanticipatesthat450plateswillbeneededasthelistgrowseachyear.AuxiliaryvolunteershelpwiththeassemblyandLegionnairesassistbydeliveringthesetreasurestoeachdestination,soitistrulyan"AmericanLegionFamily"activity.PatvolunteersduringCoastGuardweek,servingatfuneralluncheonsandmanyothereventsandactivities,sosheisleavingalegacyofherownwiththoseofuswhoarefortunatetoknowandworkwithher.PleasejoinmeinthankingPatforthewonderfulworkshedoesandtheloveandpassionshedemonstratesforourveterans!
