District Budget Please be aware our school district has been busy trying to deal with a financial shortfall as a result of the provincial budget earlier this fall. Last spring, the District made 15 million dollars in cuts based upon limited information and no provincial budget. When the province released the provincial budget earlier this fall, we were faced with an additional 17-million-dollar shortfall. The District and the board of trustees have been working diligently to deal with these challenges. We are happy to inform you that this will not result in any staffing layoffs across the district this school year. The shortfall will be addressed through other approaches. We do anticipate further cuts when the province releases its spring budget for the 2020-2021 school year. Extra & Co-Curricular Our co-curricular and extra-curricular teams at All Saints have had a very successful season so far and we are looking forward to continued success through the rest of the year. Our senior girls volleyball team and our senior boys football team capped off an amazing season with two city championship banners #Legendary. All of our other volleyball teams, girls soccer, junior football, golf and our cross-country team also had great seasons as the athletes demonstrated dedication and steady improvement throughout the season. Once again, a huge thanks to our coaches, and volunteer coaches for their commitment to our athletes and our program. Thanks as well to all our parents and fans for their support. Our band students hosted our annual St. Cecilia Festival of Bands in November with our feeder schools. It was a fantastic night of music. We can be very proud of the well- rounded education and many opportunities that are provided for our students. Social Justice in Action - #setting an example Hey, did you know? We have a Social Justice Group called Legends of Hope and prior to Halloween they delivered flyers stating they would be back on Oct 31 to collect food items for Trick or Eat. Semester 1 – Coming to an End

The focus on academics will need to continue throughout December and early January as students only have five weeks of classes remaining in semester one prior to exams. The exam schedule is included in this newsletter and posted on the website. Please check the schedule. We ask that you encourage your child to attend and sign-up for appropriate Engage sessions for additional support and to attend before and after school tutorials. Please be advised it is an expectation, students write exams on the day they are schedule. We have no flexibility with Alberta Education scheduled diploma exams. If you have questions or concerns please contact Administration. Express Bus Transportation During Exam Break

Please note that express bus service will be modified during the January exam break due to limited number of students accessing each day. Once we have confirmation from Calgary Transit we will send the modified schedule to all. 2018-2019 Yearbooks

The printing of the 2018-2019 All Saints Yearbook and Memory box has been delayed due to printing and transportation issues. Yearbooks will be arriving mid-January 2020. We are all disappointed however good things come to those who wait. We will contact everyone who purchased a yearbook as soon as they arrive. Thank you for your patience and support. Planning—2020

It is hard to believe we are already planning for September 2020. We will be beginning the process of visiting our feeder schools in the coming weeks prior to our Open House on Wednesday, January 29. With 330 grade 12’s graduating in the spring we do expect our school enrollment will grow next fall with the addition of approximately 450 grade 10 students. We have received several inquiries from non–residents (non-Catholics) looking to register for next year. Please note we will only accept non-residents if we have space and resources. Currently we have a waitlist for non-resident students for next year. Our current non-resident families who have a child attending All Saints and other children looking to attend All Saints next year are not grandfathered into the school. Those families should contact Mrs. Myers, our Registrar, to be put on the waitlist. From the staff of All Saints, we wish you all a very Blessed Advent Season, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. M. CHAPLAIN

As I sit here and reflect on the past three months I am amazed at how much has happened and the growth I have seen in our students. I have been conscious about providing opportunities to our students to be leaders and it is wonderful to witness them step up to the plate. We started off our school year partnering with 4 other high schools in our district and we assisted at Feed the Hungry. If you remember last year we had to fundraise for this meal and a lot of hard work and love went into making this day a success. We wanted to make sure everyone could have a little piece of this project. Students also decorated placemats and wrote messages of hope for the meal attendees. Students helped set up, prepare and then serve the meals to hundreds of visitors, it was a beautiful day!

Then shortly after we had our first retreat of the year for Grade 10 and we had around 20 student leaders assist. They helped with set up, ran games and were a great help throughout the entire day! The Grade 10s were reminded that they are each made with a plan and with a purpose and they are called to use their gifts to serve others in their life. Also the hope that we have in Christ, he lights our path and gives us hope for our future.

We had student Faith day with Father Rob Galea where we took 70 students to St. Michaels, it is such a blessing to celebrate our faith with our district and listen to such an inspirational message from Father.

We have also had a Connect challenge where we gathered foodbank donations and they went off to St. Vincent de Paul at St. Albert the Great and then our last event was Trick or Eat where students dressed up and went door to door where we collected more donations for St. Vincent de Paul - St. Patrick's parish! Great work Legends. A huge shout out to the Legends for Hope club who has initiated and taken the lead on many of these projects. Coming up we will be collecting toiletry items and gift cards which we will use to fill Blessing Bags which will be donated to the drop in center. Other upcoming leadership opportunities include Reading Buddies - math game partners at St. Sebastian School where we will assist students with math and reading. Please keep an eye out for these opportunities during engage. Also we have an intention box in the chapel and myself and the Religion department have committed to praying for the school and wider community and if you have any special intentions please place them in the box and we will be sure to read them each week. God Bless you as we look forward to the Advent season quickly approaching.

STUDENT SERVICES

The Counsellors and Career Practitioner have been busy helping Grade 12 students with their plans for post-secondary education. The University of Calgary, Mount Royal University, SAIT, and St. Mary’s have all presented to students during Engage sessions. St. Francis Xavier and the University of Lethbridge will also be out to our school in the next few weeks. If students are planning on applying to post-secondary institutions, they should be trying to complete their applications soon. Students who are applying within the province, should be creating a profile on the Apply Alberta website. A reminder that Mr. Manderson is available to meet with students who need help deciding on career paths and the educational program that will support them with their plans.

Mrs. Witwicki, our Scholarship Coordinator, is also available to assist students with applying for scholarships and awards. We will be hosting an Engage Session soon to provide students with research skills and tips. This information is also available

All Saints has been selected for an amazing opportunity.

From May 4th until May 23rd we will be hosting the travelling Anne Frank Museum. This museum has been travelling Canada since 2011. The museum includes information and artifacts that tell Anne Frank’s story and that tell Canadian stories related to the Second World War. Throughout the museum’s time at All Saints we will be hosting several tours for students, parents, and community members. Our hope is to provide an interactive, engaging, and respectful experience for all visitors who attend. We want to draw attention to the importance of Anne Frank’s story we are looking for students who can help us bring our vision to life.

ATHLETICS—FALL

Cross Country

The All Saints Legends Cross Country Team had a legendary season with steady improvement across the board. The weather being our major competitor, our Legends athletes proved their ability through mud, ice, wind and snow. Students excelled at Meet 1 at Canmore park where our hill training was put to the test. Meet 2 tested our ability to run like the wind as students faced off with 40km/hr winds at aptly named Prairie Winds Park. Meet 3 had us take on a veritable mud hero race at Stanley Park which proved our legendary status. not only in mucky conditions but our athlete's shoes literally turned into skates as we ran over 0 friction surfaces. Cities proved to be our best meet yet. Returning to Canmore park and running in the snow, our runners peaked in their performance, meeting and surpassing personal goals.

Congratulations to Tia Brayham and Ivania Garcia who qualified and competed in Provincials in Medicine Hat

Girls Soccer

Our girls soccer team was very strong this year and competed admirably in Division two. The dedication and commitment of the grade 12s helped to lead and motivate the team into the Semi Finals where they were unfortunately defeated in a shoot out against ND. These girls look to build and continue to get stronger leading into the 2020 season.

Volleyball

Junior girls volleyball ending a very competitive season with a tough defeat against number 1 Ernest Manning in playoffs. The girls battled hard in their best game of the season. Highlights include a 3rd place finish in the Bobcat tournament, some great thrilling sets throughout the regular season, and competing down the stretch to clinch a playoff spot. Great job this season ladies. Senior girls volleyball team brought home the CITY CHAMPIONSHIP banner on November 16, after a valiant effort taking Joane Cardinal Schubert to 5 sets and needing extra points. The season was a massive success as these ladies were undefeated at home, won the Legends Classic tournament and of course, brought home the most important championship of the season. Congrats to Reia Taylor who represented All Saints at the Selects game.

Junior Boys volleyball squad this year was a group of enthusiastic and dedicated athletes that worked hard to secure a winning record in regular season play. They proved themselves to be gamers and locked in huge wins against Jasper Place High School in the Edmonton Strathcona Tournament, as well as a victory against Bishop O’Byrne in regular reason who was ranked top in the league. They were a highly entertaining team to watch and made huge improvements this year. They will be a tough team to beat in the 2020 season! Senior Boys volleyball team had a great season and were tested as they sustained multiple injuries. These guys rose to the occasion and competed well against some very difficult competition. Their season came to a close against a tough Bowness team in the quarter-finals. Thanks to our grade 12’s Josh, Roman, Ronin, Hunter and David for their contributions to our banner winning team last year, and for building the program. Football The Junior Football season came to a stop on November 12 after a valiant effort against a very strong Division 1 Ernest Manning team. The Legends found themselves down 30-0 at the half and clawed their way back, scoring 24 points, but just short of a win. The mental toughness and perseverance demonstrated by this team is admirable and the future looks bright for Legends Football.

Our Senior Football team brought home the Division 2 CITY CHAMPIONSHIP banner on November 18 in a 14-0 win against Scarlett/Central. These guys fought hard all season and went undefeated due to their determination, focus and perseverance. So many successes were evident through these guys – both individual and team growth. Amazing job! We are so proud of this team!

FIRST EVER ALL SAINTS ROCK SHOW

On Friday, December 13th, All Saints School of Rock Club will be holding

their first ever concert. Join us for an evening of rock and roll that includes everything from Classic Hits to Modern Metal. This is not your typical school concert. It will be loud, it will be fun, and it will be legendary. Tickets are $10 and will be available at the Business Office or at the door. All proceeds will go towards buying more equipment for our club so that we can encourage even more students to explore their passion for music. We will also be collecting non-perishable food items to add to our Christmas hampers this year. School of Rock Club Looking for donations

All Saints School of Rock Club is a lunch-time club for students to explore, rehearse, and perform music in a non-conventional way. Right now, we currently have more than 40 members who come together at various lunch-hours to share in the joy of music. In the past few weeks, there has been an influx of students coming in with no musical experience but a serious interest in learning. Our biggest problem is that we do not have the equipment to facilitate the number of students who are expressing interest. We are looking for donations of electric guitars, basses, amplifiers, drumkits, and any other rock and roll type accessories that can be used by students to practice and learn either on their own or with a peer-mentor. If you or someone you know has something collecting dust that is just waiting to be played, please contact Mr. Durnie at [email protected].

Broadway Buzz at All Saints High

Anticipation is building for our 2020 musical production! The title of this year’s show is a carefully guarded secret, locked in our school’s safe. The show will be revealed to the All Saints community in the next few weeks. Students will soon be able to book auditions and apply for jobs in the crew. It takes the gifts and talents of many people to produce a full-length musical. Last year’s production involved over 150 All Saints students! Those who were able to get tickets for

our 2019 production, Fiddler on the Roof, know that our Drama department set the bar very high for themselves, and we look forward to seeing what the All Saints Theatre Company has in store for us this year! Continuing to Improv.

In other theatre news, All Saints will once again be sending a team of improvisors to compete in the City Championships at Loose Moose Theatre in early 2020. Last year’s team, The Rookie Moose Steaks did a fantastic job, earning high marks and lots of laughs. Tryouts for this year’s team will be held in the new year. Students who might be interested are encouraged to attend the weekly meeting of the All Saints Improv Club. The All Saints Improv Club boasts that they have been in existence since 1974, and that past members include Will Ferrell, Meryl Streep, Chewbacca. (But club members are not known for making things up!)

1. Snow removal in parking lots—Students who park in the student lot pay an annual

fee. These fees have enabled us to install video surveillance cameras of the lot.

The money collected can also be used for snow removal. The school parking lots

are not plowed by the school district. District approved contractors can be hired at a

significant cost, however this means we are only able to clear the lots twice through

the winter months. We will monitor and determine timing on clearing the student

parking lot. Thanks for your patience and understanding.
