Last month, I received a phone call that made my day. Mr. Ken Melrose, the man whose Melrose Family Foundation provided the original funding that made the Orange County Library System’s Melrose Center possible, called to tell me that he will be donating another $500,000 to fund an endowment for the center’s ongoing work.

For those of you who don’t know the story, the Dorothy Lumley Melrose Center for Technology, Innovation and Creativity was founded in 2014 after Mr. Melrose made a million-dollar donation to the library so we could build a high-tech center that would give the public access to an exciting new technology-education space. Today, the Melrose Center is a place of great possibility. People can use the space to collaborate with others, or take a class to learn to use the latest in design software. Melrose Center users have access to fully-equipped audio, photo and video studios, podcasting booths and editing bays. They can use our Fab Lab to stay on top of advances in 3D printing, virtual and augmented reality, electronics, programming and more. Through classes and hands-on learning opportunities, the Melrose Center puts people in touch with the technologies that shape the world we live in. Mr. Melrose made the donation that founded the center in the memory of his mother, Dorothy Melrose, a former Orange County Public Schools teacher who had an interest in technology education. We think we’ve created a space she’d be very proud of.

We are so grateful to Mr. Melrose for his continued support of the work we do, and we plan to thank him the best way we know how – by continuing to give our customers access to cutting edge technology and library service through our Melrose Center offerings.

If you’re interested in seeing the kinds of things that the Melrose Center has to offer, turn to pages 22 and 23. This month, we’ll have classes in making green-screen videos, photography and how to use our maker space for some fun DIY holiday projects. Later in the month, public voting begins for the Melrose Awards, which recognizes some of the best work made using Melrose Center resources. You can vote for your favorite projects in digital media design, photography, video and audio until the end of the month.
