J.P. POMARE Before I was an author I was ... a manager with my brother’s boutique marketing company. On the side I wrote reviews, articles and produced a podcast called On Writing.

I started writing Call Me Evie because ... I always wanted to write novels. Through high school I read and fanaticised about creating my own worlds for others to explore, then in my early twenties I wrote a lot of short stories. Some were published but most are probably still sitting somewhere on a dusty hard drive. I wanted to wait until I felt confident tackling a novel and so eventually I began writing Call Me Evie, snatching quiet moments to write around my work week.

Call Me Evie was inspired by ... Maketu. Call Me Evie is not only a psychological suspense novel, in many ways it’s also a love letter to a small beach town on the east coast of the North Island of New Zealand. The people, the rugged yet beautiful landscape, the atmosphere, I wanted above all else to capture that sense of place.

When I’m not writing I ... am baking scones, drinking coffee and reading books. I wish I could offer something more exciting but these are the things I love to do most. I also travel as much as I can with my wife, and produce a monthly podcast where I get to speak to other authors and break down the craft of writing.

When Billy, a troubled young man, comes to private eye Cormoran Strike’s office to ask for his help investigating a crime he thinks he witnessed as a child, Strike is left deeply unsettled. While Billy is obviously mentally distressed, and cannot remember many concrete details, there is something sincere about him.

Trying to get to the bottom of Billy’s story, Strike and Robin Ellacott set off on a twisting trail that leads them through the backstreets of London, into a secretive inner sanctum within Parliament, and to a beautiful but sinister manor house deep in the countryside.

And during this labyrinthine investigation, Strike’s own life is far from straightforward. His relationship with his former assistant is more fraught than it ever has been — Robin is now invaluable to Strike in the business, but their personal relationship is much more tricky than that.

ROBERT GALBRAITH is a pseudonym for J.K. Rowling, bestselling author of the Harry Potter series and The Casual Vacancy. The three previous Strike novels all topped the national and international bestseller lists and were adapted for a major television series for BBC One, produced by Brontë Film and Television.

Robert Galbraith Location: Scotland, UK

The most epic Robert Galbraith novel yet, Lethal White is both a gripping mystery and a page-turning instalment in the ongoing story of Cormoran Strike and Robin Ellacott.

COLLETT SMART As a child my favourite book was ... Well, it wasn’t one book, it was The Magic Faraway Tree series by Enid Blyton. I read the series a few times, first to myself and then to anyone who would listen (including my younger brother). When I became a teacher, my first class was a bunch of wide-eyed 6-year-olds. I read it to them too.

The best part of writing They’ll Be Okay was … the people. In my book I talk about the African philosophy of ‘Ubuntu’ – meaning, ‘A person is a person through other people’. Ubuntu recognises that we are formed through the influence, care and interaction with ‘our tribe’. We did not arrive at who we are by our own making.

Describe They’ll Be Okay in a sentence: It’s a book for all the parents who have asked me a variation of a particular question over the years (and increasingly in this post-#metoo climate) — ‘How do we practically teach young people about healthy relationships?’ Which conversation out of the 15 within They’ll Be Okay are you most passionate about? It’s tough to pick one, but I think I am really passionate about the conversation titled ‘Emotional Intelligence’: You don’t need to be ‘happy’ all the time.

My favourite place to curl up with a book is …That depends upon the season. In winter there is a spot where the sun streams in through my bedroom window, onto the carpet. I lie there on the floor with a pillow and a blanket, and read.

Cambridge geneticist, Dr Giles Yeo, has dedicated over 20 years to studying how genes influence our eating habits. Instead of looking at how we have become obese, Gene Eating tackles the question of WHY some people eat more than others. Written with his accessible, good-humoured style, Gene Eating unravels this hugely complex answer and argues that understanding our genes and the biology of our food intake is essential if we are to effectively tackle the obesity epidemic and improve our health.
