December 2017 www.southperak.com.my This year is Kumpulan Perbadanan Kemajuan Negeri Perak’s (PKNP) 50th anniversary, making it Wilayah Perak Selatan’s 2nd anniversary. People often ask us how do we stay motivated throughout the past 2 years and I would tell them it is the care that we have for Perak and the people. We believe Perak has tremendous untapped potential and we would like to leverage on those advantages, making Perak specifically Wilayah Perak Selatan (WPS) at par with other economic regions around the globe. That is why we come up with big dreams and goals for each node. It is a pretty huge opportunity and WPS is poised to take advantage of it. We’re working hard to deliver on our vision of building the foundations for the nodes and we are excited that more and more people are open to the idea. We are doing all these in parallel while growing our team and, speaking at least for myself, having a blast! Many thanks to the incredible team at WPS and the management of PKNP for being supportive. I am so proud to be part of this team, and I am so pumped to see what is in store for us on the other side of this decade come 2018. Thank you for your continued support and on behalf of WPS, I would like to wish all a Happy New Year. Warm regards, Salween Ahmad Tauffik General Manager Wilayah Perak Selatan HELLO, APE KHABOR KOME? The two-day summit organised by MaGIC had over 100 GEC Labs, 50 talk sessions, 330 exhibitors, 6 masterclasses, 20 keynote and panel discussions. Participants from all around the globe flocked the much-awaited summit and had a ground-breaking number of 15,000+ delegates visiting the summit. The delegates came from various industries but all with the same goal - to uncover new possibilities and develop revolutionary ideas for exponential growth that will shape economies of the future. WPS had the privilege to open a booth at the summit and created awareness to members of the public and potential investors on WPS’ nodes and Economic Catalyst Projects (ECPs). WPS’ ECPs managed to garner attention from the public especially on Next Generation Vehicles 2025 (NXGV25). Project NXGV25 is a project that aspires to achieve full deployment of fully driverless vehicles by 2025 and this project will position Malaysia as one of the region’s leaders in the future of driverless vehicles. This particular ECP fits in well with MaGIC’s goal in positioning Malaysia as the startup capital of Asia as it is the catalyst for creativity and innovation for entrepreneurs.

WILAYAHPERAK SELATAN- REVISITINGOUR STORYThe Wilayah Perak Selatan (WPS) story began in August 2015 as a Perak state agenda which becama a national agenda with the Federal Government’s decision in January 2016 to include it into a new growth node of the Northern Corridor Economic Region (NCER).

Realising the need for the state of Perak to further capitalise on its strategic location and to further stimulate the local economy and eventually elevate its status to stand at par with Kuala Lumpur and other economic growth corridors, the State has identified WPS as a new development area, spearheaded by PKNP as the implementing agency.

The stage is set – and WPS will be our very own showcase fully quipped with resources, infrastructure, knowledge workers and many other services that would mould WPS into the new preferred new investment hub, increase economic growth and high-value job provision for the state of Perak.

South Perak Region Development Plan or Rancangan Pembangunan Wilayah Perak Selatan (WPS) is a Perak State Agenda and forms as part of the new growth node for the Node Corridor Economic Region (NCER) with Northern Corridor Implementation Agency (NCIA) as a regional enabler focusing on high impact incentives.

With a defined development concept, this area will be developed through a detailed and comprehensive development planning in order to stimulate economic and socio-economic growth in a holistic and sustainable manner.

This development plan will also complement the existing activities and development plans such as heavy industrial park, new townships, industries as well as existing developments in the region. WPS is targeted to achieve an estimated GDP of RM19 billion and the attraction of RM30 billion of total investment by the year 2020.

WPS comprises of four development nodes; Bagan Datuk, Tanjung Malim, Tapah and Teluk Intan which covers an area of 4.492km2. WPS offers great prospects in different unique environments for the 3 core businesses which includes Township Development, Ports & Logistics and Hospitality & Tourism.

Kumpulan Perbadanan Kemajuan Negeri Perak (PKNP) Group organised Tapah Education City Pre-Implementation Workshops on 24th October, 7th November and 27th November 2017 at Holiday Inn Glenmarie and The Saujana Hotel Kuala Lumpur respectively.

The workshops were attended by various key players in the industry as we gained insights and views on ways for Tapah to be developed as a Centre of Township and a full-fledged education township.

Areas that were touched upon in the workshops included industry/ sector growth areas, industry collaboration, future demand of workforce skillset as other critical areas.

The workshops started with welcoming remarks by a representative from North Corridor Implementation Authority (NCIA) explaining on North Corridor Economic Region (NCER) and how Wilayah Perak Selatan (WPS) became a wing under NCER.

The day continued with opening remarks by Puan Salween Ahmad Taufik, General Manager, WPS who touched upon WPS’ four nodes and its Economic Catalysts. Puan Salween stressed upon Tapah in detail as WPS envisions Tapah to be a regional education hub in creating employable high-skilled talents for high tech industries.

Puan Salween then gave the floor to Ernst & Young (EY) who provided an overview of the objectives and updates of the Tapah EduCity project to members of the audience before they adjourned in groups for the break-out session. The break-out session became a platform for the audience to share their thoughts, ideas and insights on the topic of discussion.

After a thorough discussion, the audience had to send a representative from each group to present their insights gathered from their earlier group discussion.

It was indeed an insightful day for all as we managed to get to know industry players better whilst taking on their ideas, input and suggestions for a better Tapah.

The team of Wilayah Perak Selatan (WPS) had the opportunity to gather for an Islamic gathering where we performed dhuha prayers, the recital of surah yaasin and tazkirah on Friday, 15th December at the parameters of our Ara Damansara office.

The lounge area transformed into our prayer area with spreads of colourful sejadahs laid at the lounge area. The day started with dhuha prayers led by our colleague, Qamarul Ariffin who became the Imam for the day. Clad in telekung and appropriate attire, we performed the prayers with wonderful surah read by our Imam of the day, continued by the recital of yaasin.

We then adjourned to the meeting room where we were greeted with a range of delicious breakfast spread consisting nasi lemak, kuey teow goreng, a variety of malay kuih and fruits all courtesy of our General Manager, Puan Salween Ahmad Tauffik.

We also had the opportunity of having Brother Azim Daniel Abdullah to grace the event as he gave a short taskirah on ‘The Beauty of Islam’ as a reminder of the after-life.

Such is a good reminder to all of us not to be so clouded by worldly attributes and to always bear in mind what is in store for us in the after-life.

At WPS, we believe success is having a balanced life where we stress upon life and the after-life.

Ali, Muthu & Ah Hock, a favourite kopitiam amongst the colleagues here in Wilayah Perak Selatan (WPS) features traditional local favourites like Nasi Lemak Ayam, Mee Goreng Mamak, Roti Jala and Cantonese Fried Noodles. The most popular item in the menu, Nasi Lemak Ayam features crispy, crunchy layer of chicken skin with tender chicken flesh. It comes with spicy and aromatic sambal accompanied by fragrant rice. This dish, priced at RM11 is a hit amongst guests who enjoys a filling lunch.

However if you wish to have noodles for lunch, try opting the Cantonese fried noodles. Imagine yellow noodles swimming in thick, eggy gravy with condiments of chicken and fish cakes with a generous amount of vegetables. Best eaten with cut chillies, this dish is priced at RM9.

This kopitiam is our go-to place for lunch as it is near the office and we can vouch for the taste the place has to offer.

They also have breakfast meals which includes a drink and your chosen breakfast meal. The breakfast meal range from waffles, pancakes to healthy smoothies, suitable for the health conscious.

Make sure you pay this café a visit with an empty stomach to enjoy tantalising international delights at this hidden gem in Oasis Square.

In business and in life, we are told to develop our killer instincts. We are told that the difference between those with the instinct and those without it, is their approach to dealing with new opportunities.

Those with the killer instinct do not think twice about new opportunities in life, they grab them while everyone else is sleeping on the decision. These people see opportunities as a chance for personal growth through exposure to new experiences.

In our continuous efforts to better ourselves, we left the four walls of our office to hone our killer instincts through a half day war game at Galactic Laser Tag in Sunway Pyramid recently as part of our 2nd CULTURE TRANSFORMATION PROGRAM (CTP) which was led by the Strategic Marketing & Communications’ team.

The team played a total of three rounds of laser tag; two rounds amongst ourselves and another round with strangers.

After three rounds of games, we had a short discussion amongst ourselves where each of us were asked to give our perspective and insights on how we thought the game can be related to the company’s five core values

(Think Big, Entrepreneurship, Stakeholder Success, Outcome Oriented and Risk Taking). It was a great day for all of us and everyone enjoyed themselves. We ended the session with a quick lunch at a nearby restaurant to regain our energy before heading back to our normal routine.

We look forward to the next CTP which we anticipate to be held in March 2018!
