EDITOR’S COMMENTS BY ROLF HILL
New Board coming, New Year, Old Friends … 2018
is just around the corner. Winter-work is underway
for many. Enjoy the Holidays. Some of you may have
missed the cover of the 2016 issue of VKA FirsTurn …
VKA FIRSTURN© -4- Dec 2017 MMXVII No.8
SEP. BOARD MEETING SUMMARY BY BILL BLOODWORTH SYNOPSIS: There are 368 total members, 328 full members and
40 associate members. The ending August balance is $20,071.18
which reflects revenue of $1,152.00 and expenses of $1,102.55. Other
than the previously announced resignations, all other board members
and coordinators indicated their intension to serve in 2018. West coast
applicants are still being sought. The possible need for a legal
disclaimer regarding the intention of pre-event kart inspections was
brought to the club’s attention. The Bushnell event has been scheduled for late January
2018 and the Quincy event is back on the VKA schedule for August 2018. At the Delmar
event Scott Klingler will allow rear engine karts with foreign engines to participate by
placing them at the front of the grid. A Guidelines committee meeting is scheduled for
October 4. Rolf Hill ran a well-organized kart show for Gary Wlodarsky at the Camden
event. The historic show class will be added at the Delmar event. Interest in a Fall event
for the North Georgia area is not being pursued at this time due to the work which would
be required by Bob and his desire to avoid impacting the new upcoming Saltillo event.
Bob will provide a promoter’s option class at the Barnesville event for karts with Briggs
flathead 5hp 4-cycle engines if attendance supports such a class. Expenditure of $500 was
authorized for advertising in Rolf Hill’s vintage karting wall calendar, 2018 edition.
OCT. BOARD MEETING SUMMARY BY BILL BLOODWORTH
SYNOPSIS: There are 376 total members, 334 full members and 42 associate members.
The ending September balance is $20,229.26 which reflects revenue of $445.01 and
expenses of $286.93. Bill McCornack will provide a refresher article regarding overbore
rules for 80 cc and 100 cc motors. An altercation at the Delmar event precipitated by rough
driving, excessive blocking, and a bumping incident at pit entry was discussed. Scott
Klingler and the track owner’s son intervened, and further escalation was avoided. Scott
disqualified both participants. Scott would like to see a rule in place that would ban
participants in incidents such as this from future VKA events. Bill McCornack
complimented Scott Klingler, Gary Wlodarsky, and the Nielsen family for the
exceptionally well-run Delmar event. Gary Wlodarsky used the new show format at
Delmar which included a Historical class and he intends to use this format at future shows.
Scott Klingler has a tentative 2018 schedule which is about 80% firm. Fremont will replace
Circleville and Nicholson Speedway in Chestertown, Maryland will probably replace the
Sandy Hook event, but not at the same date. Lynn Haddock plans to research past rules
regarding aluminum flywheel use with 4-cycle engines. Rolf intends for every 2018
magazine to be a 2-month issue with the possible exception of January and December. The
decision to publish a 2018 December issue would be based on events to be covered and
available articles. Guest Sal Palatucci complimented Karl Ginter for Karl’s work with Joe
Weissner, owner of Nicholson Speedway in Chestertown Maryland.

2017 NE PROMOTERS’ CUP BY AL POSTIGLIONE
Well, the season has come to an end
and the four events of “The
Northeast Vintage Kart Promoter’s
Cup Series” (NEPCS), are in the
books.
Looking back now, and knowing the
goals that were set, I can say that the
“Series” was a huge success.
With the NEPCS came an increase
of participation in each of the four
individual events from their
previous year. Also, along with
more karts in the five classes that
were spotlighted and scored in the
series, there was also a marked
increase of participation in ALL
classes, including the “Historic”
Class.
As for the events themselves, the
atmosphere was friendly and
nostalgic. On track action was fast,
exciting, close, and clean! The
weather, it was great, and so was the
food!
Kart Show participation at each
event was indicative of the overall
excitement generated by the Series.
Simply stated, it was BIG!
Awards were presented at the final
Event of the Series at Cuddeback.
All award recipients received a
framed certificate, with the First
Place winners also receiving a “N.E.
Promoter’s Cup Series” jacket
courtesy of Kent Windham. Paul
Hunter also was awarded the Series
“Sportsmanship Award.” (See p.15
of the Oct/Nov issue of VKA
FirsTurn©.
In addition, an award, created and
supported by Kent Windham, for
the “Best Appearing Team” was
awarded to Rolf Hill.

LAMAR SPEEDWAY AKA BARNESVILLE BY BOB BARTHELEMY
As the word handed down has it, the
Lamar County Speedway, just west
of the small town of Barnesville,
Georgia first came into existence in
1959. The dirt oval track was built
and operated by Mr. Richard
Wilson, the proprietor of Wilson
Appliance, a furniture and appliance
store in town of Barnesville. Mrs.
Helen, Richard’s lovely wife, was
very active at the store and the
registration and concessions at the
track. The new track became a
popular place to see the little go-
karts race. A few years later the
oval was paved, and a tower was
constructed to score the racing
activity. Dicky Wilson and his
sisters were just youngsters during
this time. Dicky was the only one of
the siblings to take to this new sport
of go-kart racing and boy did he
ever, as his many National wins will
attest.
As the interest grew in karting, so
did Richard’s and Dicky’s interest
in racing these little machines. To
keep up with the excitement, a .27-
mile road course expansion of the
paved oval occurred in 1965. In
March of 1966, the International
Karting Federation (IKF) held their
Winter National event at the
Barnesville facility. Our beloved
Louise Smiley, who has participated
at several of our recent VKA events,
was at that first Winter Nationals in
VKA FIRSTURN© -7- Dec 2017 MMXVII No.8
1966. By this time Mr. Wilson had
become one of the best McCullough
engine builders and hung up his
driving gear to put Dicky up front.
In the years to follow the legend of
Barnesville kept growing as more
and more famed kart racers
participated at the small track in
middle Georgia.
By the early 70’s, the Lamar County
Speedway was the place to be for
the Winter Nationals in March.
Racers from all over the country and
even foreign countries converged at
Barnesville for some of the best
racing known to man. Scott Pruitt,
Scott Goodyear, Lake Speed, Lynn
Haddock, Kyle Adkins, Dwain
Lieber, Ken Burton, Jackie
Harrison, Junior Neal, and too many
others to name made the trek to
Barnesville virtually every year thru
the seventies. The very first World
Karting Association (WKA) race
was the 1972 Winter Nationals at
Barnesville, Georgia. Richard
Wilson and George Kugler, along
with others were quite instrumental
in the creation of the WKA. In
1975, the WKA Winter Olympics
logged 619 entries and I can attest
from experience, this was a crowded
but “happening place.”
Throughout the 80’s, 90’s and
since the turn of the century, the
Lamar County Speedway (LCS) has
been operating as a local track
promoting both two and four-cycle
kart racing. The four-cycle Winter
Nationals were always a very big
event at LCS during this time.
We at the Georgia Sprint
Karting Association (GSKA)
are proud of the history of the
Lamar County Speedway and
are committed to maintaining
and improving the track for
future generations to use and
enjoy. We also look forward to
our 12th annual Vintage Kart
Winter Nationals March 15th
thru 17th, 2018. In addition to
the 2018 line-up of VKA 2-
cycle classes, we will be
running the Briggs flatheads in
both stock and limited modified
classes at the 2018 event, March 15
– 17.
We are also inviting all the long
time VKA racers and even racers
from back in the day that may not
even be involved to come out and
join us for a true “Racers Reunion.”
Come join us for a good time!

2018 VKA AT BUSHNELL BY REBECCA SPAUDE
Stop shoveling your show and come down to play at Bushnell
Motorsports Park (BMP) in sunny Florida on January 25 – 27!
Built in 2015, this brand-new facility features a ⅔ mile asphalt race
track with a bridge and an underpass, making it the only competition
karting track in the nation with those features. Located ¼ mile west
of I-75, BMP is easily accessible and an enjoyable race track to visit
for the entire family.
The Facility opened in October 2015, BMP has hosted Vintage
Karting Events every winter since opening, taking advantage of the
beautiful weather. Since Year 1, we have updated our facility and
now have an updated pit area, with bathrooms, showers, a
registration area, and a scoring tower. We also have a frozen yogurt
shop on the facility too! The track features 16 turns, one of which
is banked, and the ability to run multiple configurations.
The People of Bushnell Motorsports Park include Bil Spaude - The
Legend. Racing since the invention of the wheel, Bil has traveled
the county over the past 50+ years racing and making friends
everywhere he goes. Bil has helped promote and make the VKA
events at BMP a big turnout ... not just for on-track racers, but racers
VKA FIRSTURN© -9- Dec 2017 MMXVII No.8
of the past who come and enjoy each other's company. Bil built the
track along with his grandson Bret and Bret's wife Rebecca.
Bret Spaude - Started racing at the age of nine and hasn't stopped
since. He grew up in Bushnell, Florida, but spent most of his time
traveling around America to different race tracks. He competed in
his first National Road Racing race, held at Daytona International
Speedway, at age 12, and won. Bret began Grand-Am racing in
2008. From 2010-2013, Bret was signed and sponsored by Subaru,
earning a victory and multiple pole awards competing in a
professional racing series.
Rebecca Spaude - Started racing in 2017 at the Vintage Karting
Race in Bushnell, Rebecca has officially raced three times. She
usually comes in last place, but has a blast regardless.
Finley Spaude - The miniature labradoodle that wins the heart of
every spectator and racer that visits Bushnell Motorsports Park.
We look forward to seeing the Vintage Karting Association down in
Bushnell in 2018!

2017 ROEBLING ROAD ENDURO BY DICK CHAREST
Each year the Fall Southern Kart Club Enduro at Roebling Road Raceway
is a special event for vintage enduro karts. It is set-up so that we run twice
on Saturday and again twice on Sunday. Each demonstration event is 15
minutes long so that means we have the equivalent of a 30 minutes race
each day. The nice thing about this format is that if you have a problem
in one race, you can fix it and still get to run several more times.
About 5:30 pm on Friday, October 20, 2017, the track gates opened and
enduro karters entered the track to set-up their pit spots. Roebling Road is
a 2.02-mile road course and is a lot of fun to drive. The weather was warm
and sunny this year and the track was smooth and fast. Practice started on
Saturday morning and then it was time for our first vintage race.
We had a good variety of vintage karts and engines on the grid. Eight
vintage karts were gridded for the first race. After a few laps, things settled
down with Tony Ellison leading the race followed by Dick Charest. Bill
Johnson and Rick Gilmore dropped out early in the race, but everyone else
finished. Terry Armstrong finished in 3rd followed by Mark D’Elia, Bill
Anderson, and Daryl Parks. Tony set a fast time for Race 1 with a best lap
time of 1:24.124.
After the 1st race, we prepared our karts for Race 2. We had nine vintage
karts gridded for Race 2. Once the green flag dropped, Tony Ellison took
the lead again. Bill Johnson had problems right off the start and was
unable to complete a lap. Dick Charest dropped out about a third of the
way through the race with carburetor problems. Tony continued and won
VKA FIRSTURN© -11- Dec 2017 MMXVII No.8
the race with Rick Gilmore in 2nd and Terry
Armstrong in 3rd followed by Bill Anderson, Daryl
Parks, Mark D’Elia, and Todd Breedlove. Tony
was very consistent and set fast time for Race 2
with a best lap time of 1:24.158. The weather
forecast changed overnight and the rain that was
originally forecasted to come in late on Sunday
was now scheduled to arrive by mid-day.
Consequently, the Southern Kart Club (SKC)
shortened practice and combined classes to try to
get races in for the participants. Also, there is a
“quiet time” on Sunday morning from 11 am to
noon for church services so that made the
scheduling of races even more challenging for the
SKC.
For Race 3, we had eight vintage karts gridded for the race. When the
green flag dropped, Rick Gilmore took the lead of the race followed by
Dick Charest. Tony Ellison had problems on the starting grid and finally
got started, but was quite a way back at the beginning of the race. Daryl
Parks had problems and dropped out early. Tony drove hard and worked
his way up to 2nd place. With only 2 laps left he passed Rick to take the
lead. Tony continued and won with Rick Gilmore in 2nd and Dick Charest
in 3rd. Terry Armstrong finished in 4th followed by Bill Anderson, Mark
D’Elia, and Todd Breedlove. Tony again ran very consistent laps and set
fast time for Race 3 with a best lap time of 1:23.861.
Unfortunately, shortly after the race during the “quiet time,” it began to
rain. Although the rain stopped shortly after noon, the track was too wet
to continue the races and the remainder of the event was cancelled.
THIS IS VINTAGE KARTING !
VKA FIRSTURN© -12- Dec 2017 MMXVII No.8
All in all, the Fall Southern Kart Club Enduro at Roebling Road was a
success and we look forward to running at Roebling Road again in 2018.
The Spring WKA race at Roebling Road is scheduled for March 9-11 and
the Fall Southern Kart Club Enduro event there is scheduled for October
20-21, 2018. Mark your calendars now and plan to come to Roebling Road
for these enduro races.
