Supergirl premieres on Independent Lens Monday, December 18 at 9 PM on WTVP

Meet the Orthodox Jewish Preteen Who Has Been Breaking Powerlifting Records Since She Was NineWhen Naomi Kutin, an Orthodox Jewish girl from New Jersey, broke a world powerlifting record at the age of ten – lifting 215 pounds when she herself weighed only 97 pounds – she quickly became a media sensation, earning the nickname “Supergirl.” This fascinating, intimate portrait follows her unique com-ing-of-age story as she fights to hold on to her title while navigating the perils of adolescence — from strict religious obligations to cyberbullying to health issues that could jeopardize her future in powerlifting. Directed by Jessie Auritt, Supergirl premieres on Independent Lens, Monday, December 18, 2017, 9 PM on WTVP.

So tune in and let Create help you ward off the winter blues!

4Dec. 9 & 10—The Gift of Giving This weekend, join Create lifestyle experts for some holiday inspiration. Travelers Joseph Rosendo, Rudy Maxa and Jim West bask in the glow of Europe’s Christmas markets. Sara Moulton makes peppermint bark to share with friends. Katie Brown adds custom flourishes to store-bought gifts, while the Quilting Arts team fashions a trio of personalized gifts. And artist Jerry Yarnell paints a beautiful snow scene for his Christmas card.

4Dec. 16 & 17—Chocolate Dreams Satisfy your chocolate cravings while Create chefs prepare dozens of decadent sweet treats. The menu includes: Cook’s Country’s Mississippi mud pie, Nick Stellino’s old-fash-ioned chocolate pudding, Julia Child’s ov-en-roasted plum cakes with chocolate sauce, Pati Jinich’s flourless chocolate pecan cake, and Ellie Krieger’s double-chocolate waffles a la mode and mocha java smoothie.

4Dec. 23 & 24—Joy of the Holidays Celebrate the holidays with Create’s lifestyle experts. A Chef ’s Life Vivian Howard ex-plores new and traditional Southern recipes, Andreas Viestad makes authentic Scandi-navian Christmas dishes and Chef Wilbert Jones prepares a healthy Kwanzaa feast. Joseph Rosendo experiences the joys of Christmastime in San Antonio. P. Allen Smith and Katie Brown deck the halls in style. And Bob Ross captures a classic Christmas scene — a happy little church tucked in a bed of snow, evergreens and mountains. (Repeats December 25)

This Winter, AMERICAN EXPERIENCE will premiere four new films. Below is a look at what’s coming in 2018.

INTO THE AMAZON—JANUARY 9Into the Amazon tells the remarkable story of President Theodore Roosevelt’s journey with legendary Brazilian explorer Candido Rondon into the heart of the South Ameri-can rainforest to chart an unexplored tributary of the Amazon.

THE SECRET OF TUXEDO PARK—JANUARY 16In the fall of 1940, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill delivered his country’s most valuable military secret — a revolutionary radar component — to a Wall Street tycoon, Alfred Lee Loomis. Using his connections, his money, and his brilliant scien-tific mind, Loomis and his team of scientists developed radar technology that played a more decisive role than any other weapon in World War II.

THE GILDED AGE—FEBRUARY 6The Gilded Age presents a compelling and complex story of one of the most convulsive and transformative eras in American history. In the closing decades of the nineteenth century, the U.S. population doubled in the span of a single generation, national wealth expanded, and two classes rose simultaneously, separated by a gulf of experience and circumstance that was unprecedented in American life.

THE BOMBING OF WALL STREET—FEBRUARY 13On September 16, 1920, a horse-drawn cart packed with dynamite exploded in front of Morgan Bank, leaving 38 dead and hundreds more seriously injured in the nation’s financial center. The Bombing of Wall Street tells the story of a mostly forgotten act of terror that remains unsolved today and sparked a bitter national debate about how far the government should go to protect the nation from acts of political violence.
