I’m stoked. The holidays are just around the corner, and I’m all set to spend them with my parents and younger brother, Jay. My dad is completely into fishing and my mom is like me — a fitness and reading nut. I’m shopping our LCPS discounts for just the right gift ideas. My mom has always loved Mary Kay cosmetics so I think I’ll go that

route. Jay is still in college, so I’m thinking I’ll pick up a VISA Gift Card for him at our credit union. One thing I DO know for sure is that wherever the holidays take me, I’ll be looking my best, thanks to some really incredible employee discounts at salons and other beauty spots.

Holiday presents, parties and fun aside, though, the end of the year marks my switch to my new HDHP health care plan — a very big deal. I mean the plan is all new territory for me. But I went to the Employee Health, Wellness and Benefits event and got some tips on my transition. For one thing, I’ll be getting a statement in the mail that confirms my HDHP enrollment, and I can turn to the folks at Employee Health, Wellness and Benefits anytime for answers to any more questions that pop up.

December 2016 3

I did learn a lot of other terrific news then and there at the event. For one thing, I’ve got money coming my way, and just in time for holiday gift-giving. Yeah! I’ll be getting a reimbursement for 3 months of my gym membership and am also expecting $100 back for my CSA subscription. PLUS, I can look forward to a $120 Wellness Passport reward for turning in my Wellness Passport sometime in the first quarter of the year. Here’s hoping next year is just as active and healthy!

I also learned that under my HDHP, preventive services are still free (free sounds good), and… I need to see a dentist. Truth to tell, I’ve always been a fraidy-cat about going to the dentist, but I’ve searched out a nice, easy-going, understanding dentist, and I’m all set to visit her next week.

For me, the holidays are only complete when I’ve carved out some time to give back, and every year, I look forward to a new way to do just that. This year, Emma and

I are going to give blood together at the Tuesday December 13 blood drive, and also help out with Loudoun Volunteer Caregivers.

Well, THAT’s a lot to get done before break. But it’s all good,

and I can’t wait to see my family. To my students and friends here

at LCPS, Happy Holidays. See you on the other side!

Help LCPS Head Start Families

Volunteers are needed to engage children in our Shelter while their parents are in Life Skills classes and support groups. Volunteers will plan and lead shelter children in recreational and educational activities (i.e., board games, crafts, stories, themed party, etc.). Volunteers MUST be at least 16 years old; volunteers 18 and up must also be prepared to pass background checks. Volunteers will feel great knowing they are providing a fun atmosphere for children in a homeless situation.

Spend a Saturday helping improve the quality of life for an elder person or a disabled adult in our community. When you participate in the “fix-it” program you’ll make handyman-type repairs and help with chores around the house. Sponsored by Loudoun Volunteer Caregivers (a local nonprofit), and Loudoun County Area Agency on Aging (a local government agency), are partnering to offer this chore/repair services program to help older adults and adults with disabilities to maintain independence and quality of life.

Many Head Start families are in need of your help this holiday season. Horace the Holiday Horse, who resides in the Administration Building on the first floor is the new home to our Head Start gift giving program. Our annual gift giving program benefits 100 of our neediest LCPS children. Donate a gift card in any amount, from Walmart, a local gas station or a local grocery store. You can also purchase a gift for a child who is newborn to age 17. Place the unwrapped gift under Horace. If you choose to donate a gift card or money, please drop it off to either Brenda Allen (Room 106-D) or Chris Kmak in (Room 220). Gifts will be accepted through December 16.

Additional questions? Please contact Holly Sontz at 571-252-2110 or [email protected].

When was the last time you saw the dentist? If the mere thought of a dental drill fills you with dread and is keeping you from visiting your dentist, you might have dental phobia. It’s not unusual for people to be scared to go to the dentist. According to a survey Delta Dental conducted in 2014, 58 percent of Americans indicate some fear or reluctance in visiting the dentist and 23 percent of Americans with unresolved oral

Health

5 Ways to Fight Your Dental Phobia

1 Find an understanding dentist that will make you feel comfortable.

2 Start with a low-stress experience, such as a cleaning, and if you need additional work, schedule them over time instead of all in one sitting.

3 Talk to your dentist about sedation and pain management options.

4 Talk to your dentist about anti-anxiety drugs if you’re especially anxious about a procedure.

5 Practice meditation or bring an object to hold.

Don’t let your fears keep you away from the dentist. Not only does it improve your oral health and save you money on expensive procedures, but adults who visit the dentist are almost twice as likely to report good or better overall well-being.

health issues avoid having them fixed due to fear of the procedure.

The most commonly cited reasons for fearing the dentist are being afraid to find out what oral care you might need, unexpected costs, fear of shots that may be needed for numbing, lack of control, bad past experiences and the dentist is not caring or sensitive. So what can you do to fight your dental phobia?

Benefit Confirmation Statements

Benefit Confirmation Statements will be mailed to your home, in mid-December. This statement will reflect your benefit elections for 2017. Please review the statement carefully. If you have any questions or issues with the elections reflected, contact Employee Health, Wellness and Benefits via email at [email protected], no later than December 30th.

Diabetes is one of the prevalent chronic conditions within our organization. As we take steps to encourage better adherence to prescribed care and control costs, LCPS would like to inform you of upcoming changes to all diabetic supplies and medications purchased through LCPS plans. Effective March 1, 2017, LCPS will be participating in a Diabetes Care Value Program through Express Scripts and all LCPS who have coverage with Express

Diabetes Care Value Program

Scripts will be enrolled in this program.

How this affects you if you are using diabetic supplies or medications

Enrollment in the Diabetes Care Value Program requires;

• all diabetic supply purchases to be a 90-day fill, and

• all 90-day fills be through ONLY a Walgreens pharmacy or the Express Scripts mail order pharmacy.

30-day retail fills for diabetic medications will no longer be available.

What you need to do if you are using diabetic supplies or medications

You will need to request a new 90-day prescription with 3 refills, from your treating physician, by March 1, 2017 to avoid any disruption in coverage.

Express Scripts will send a reminder letter by February 15, 2017, to all diabetes patients enrolled in an LCPS medical plan.

If you have any additional questions, please feel free to contact Express Scripts Customer Service at 1-800-886-9672.

Don’t Lose Money! Important Information for HDHP with HSA Enrollees

Champion for Change

October Karen Ashworth Library Assistant

Meadowland Elementary SchoolNominated by: Sandra Alpher

Karen Ashworth is a Library Assistant at Meadowland Elementary School. She encouraged me to start running when I began working at Meadowland in August. She patiently helped me go from struggling to walk and run a little, to running a 5K.

In October, Karen encouraged a group of Meadowland staff members to participate in a 5K race at One Loudoun. She made crayon costumes for us and named our team “The Meandering Mustangs”. We had so much fun, and we won the costume contest! Karen then encouraged us to run a 5K in Reston in December. The group of runners grew, the costumes were more elaborate, and we had fun getting fit. We just finished our fourth 5K and this time we had 37 on our team. Karen encouraged each one of us to do our best. Karen Ashworth is helping Meadowland Elementary get fit!

With the holiday season upon us what can we do to stay in shape?

• Adults need at least 2 hours and 30 minutes (150 minutes) of moderate-intensity aerobic activity (i.e., brisk walking) every week.

• You can do it 10 minutes at a time.

• Physical activity is important to building stamina and staving off the blues.

• Physical activity is anything that gets your body moving.

• Aerobic and strength training are both important to good health.

Review your retirement plan beneficiariesDo you know where your retirement plan savings will go when you pass away? By taking just a few minutes to log in to your retirement plan website, you can ensure your savings go where they should—to your loved ones, a favorite charity, or wherever you’ve chosen. This step is especially important if you’ve had a recent life event, such as getting divorced, getting married or welcoming a child into your family.

Your retirement account beneficiary designation is the final word concerning your assets in the plan, not your will. Failing to update your workplace retirement plan beneficiaries can result in unintended outcomes, such as an ex-spouse receiving your assets.

We know life is constantly changing. That’s why it’s important to take a few minutes once a year to make sure your important financial decisions still make sense.

To review or change your beneficiaries, log on to your VRS 457 account or call 1-877-327-5261. VRS Plan 1&2 members can access their account at www.varetire.org/457 and Hybrid members use www.varetire.org/hybrid.

As your circumstances change, make sure your decisions do, too. It’s your hard-earned money. Make sure it goes where you’d like!
