Crankhandle News 3
It is hard to believe but we are quickly moving into the last few weeks of 2016 and this is my last Presidents report for this year. It has been another great year for this Club of ours that is soon to have its 50
th birthday. I am sure that our club would
have to be the oldest car club on the Gold Coast and it is interesting to wonder upon what the next 50 years might bring. Maybe we might have electric and hybrid antique cars joining the club by then.
Our Christmas Party Luncheon as I mentioned in the last report, is this year on the Saturday 10th of December many members have already put their names down but if we have not got yours please get in touch with Pam. We have kept the price at $20.00 per person it is great value and if it is half as good as our previous Christmas Parties it will be a day not to be missed. John Wood organised the midweek run on 27
th of November and we had a great
turn out for the day with everybody enjoying the novel timed section on the back road at Biddaddaba. This section was won by Peter Amey but it is very interesting to note that we have a lot of ``Lead Foots” in the club as all members were well under the allotted time for the distance covered. Thanks go to John for his time and effort sorting out this fun run for us. We are having a Meeting at 7pm on 2
nd of December to organise details for next
year’s Autorama , so if any members would like to help the committee, have a say and put some input in, please do come along as you will be most welcome. On behalf of the committee I do wish to thank all members for their attendances at our events and meetings. It really has been another wonderful year and it is very gratifying for the commit-tee members when we have good turnouts for club events. We wish you all the best make sure you have a Merry Christmas and a very happy New Year and we all look forward to 2017. Merry Christmas and Happy Motoring. Cheers David Mitchell.

EDITORIAL
Greetings from the editors computer
Well here we are again almost Christmas
and another year almost over. This has
been a great year for our club with a great
swap which we must thank all those that
gave up their weekend to help without them
the swap would have been a flop.
Our club runs and rallies have been well
attended with more and more members
now bringing their club cars and moderns
for all to see and help promote our club.
Early next year is going to be a busy one for the club with Autorama at the end of
April and our swap mid-July, but remember we need helpers at both events.
As well as our own club events we have invitation rallies and shows so keep an
eye on the newsletters for details including swap which can help with those im-
portant parts for your club car.
One point to remember is that if your car is under restoration or repair still come
along on our runs, friendship is what’s important. I had a few months with no work-
ing club car as the Austin needs a new clutch well is original. So I just came along
in the Commodore, now I have the Rover so we can come along in an older club
car.
On behave of the committee and their families I would like to wish everyone a very
Merry Christmas and a great motoring 2017.

The Importance of walking Walking can add minutes to your life. This enables you at 85 years old to spend an additional 5 months in a nursing home at $3,000 per month.
My grandpa started walking five miles a day when he was 60.Now he's 97 years old and we have no idea where the hell he is.
I like long walks, especially when they are taken by people who annoy me.
The only reason I would take up walking is so that I could hear heavy breathing again.
I have to walk early in the morning, before my brain figures out what I'm doing.
I joined a health club last year; spent about $1,000, haven't lost a pound, apparent-ly you have to go there!
Every time I hear the dirty word 'exercise', I wash my mouth out with chocolate.
I do have flabby thighs, but fortunately my stomach covers them.
The advantage of exercising every day is so when you die, they'll say,
'Well, she looks good, doesn't she?'
If you are going to try cross-country skiing, start with a small country.
I know I got a lot of exercise the last few years, just getting over the hill.
We all get heavier as we get older, because there's a lot more information in our heads. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.
Every time I start thinking too much about how I look, I just find a pub with a Happy Hour, and by the time I leave, I look just fine.
You could run this over to your friends, but just e-mail it to them. It will save you the walk!

Mid-Week run 26th October
A very good turn out of 11 club cars congregated at the Clubhouse on a beautiful
Spring day eagerly anticipating the unusual run put together by John Wood and
Danni Nugent. John had placed 12 playing cards on poles and trees along the
route and the object was to find as many as possible, although at times difficult to
see most entrants found at least some.
We stopped in Canungra for a morning-tea and a chat before heading off on the
second part of the run towards Beaudesert. During this phase we stopped on a
back road for a timed-kilometre run, the aim being to average 35kph. Notwith-
standing the abuse hurled at us by the occupants of a passing GCCC truck, we all
had a go albeit way to fast for the criteria, apparently, according to JW we are a
bunch of hoons!!
After a great lunch at the Beaudesert RSL we made our separate ways home.
Well done John and Danni for a very well organised and interesting run.

BMC A-Series engine
Austin Motor Company's small straight-4
automobile engine, the A-Series, is one
of the most common in the world.
Launched in 1951 with the Austin A30,
production lasted until 2000 in the Mini. It
used a cast-iron block and cylinder head,
and a steel crankshaft with 3 main bear-
ings. The camshaft ran in the cylinder
block, driven by a single-row chain for
most applications, and with tappets slid-
ing in the block, accessible through
pressed steel side covers for most appli-
cations, and with overhead valves oper-
ated through rockers.
The cylinder head for the overhead-valve
version of the A-Series engine was de-
signed by Harry Weslake – a cylinder
head specialist famed for his involvement
in SS (Jaguar) engines and several F1
title winning engines. Although a 'clean
sheet' design the A-Series owed much to
established Austin engine design prac-
tise, resembling in general design
(including the Weslake head) and overall
appearance a scaled-down version of the
1200cc overhead-valve engine first seen
in the Austin A40 Devon which would
form the basis of the later B-Series en-
gine.
The A-Series design was licensed by
Nissan of Japan, along with other Austin
designs. Nissan modified the design into
the Nissan A engine that was launched in
1966.
British Leyland was keen to update the
old A-Series design in the 1970s. Howev-
er, attempts at replacement, including an
aborted early-70s Rover K engine and an
OHC version of the A-Series, ended in
failure. During the development of what
would become the Austin Metro, engi-
neers tested the A-Series against its
more modern rivals and found that it still
offered competitive (or even class-
leading) fuel economy and torque for its
size. While in the 1970s the A-Series had
begun to seem dated against a new gen-
eration of high-revving overhead cam en-
gines, by the end of the decade a new
emphasis on good economy and high
torque outputs at low speeds meant that
the A-Series' inherent design was still
well up to market demand
Given this, and the lack of funds to de-
velop an all-new power unit, it was decid-
ed to upgrade the A-Series unit at a cost
of £30 million. The result was the 'A-Plus'
Series of engines. Available in 998cc and
1275cc, the A-Plus had stronger engine
blocks and cranks, lighter pistons and
improved piston rings, Spring loaded ten-
sioner units for the timing chain and oth-
er detail changes to increase the service
Crankhandle News 13
interval of the engine (from 6,000 to
12,000 miles).
More modern SU carburettors and re-
vised manifold designs allowed for small
improvements in power without any de-
crease in torque or fuel economy. Many
of the improvements learnt from the
Cooper-tuned units were also incorpo-
rated, with A-Plus engines having a gen-
erally higher standard of metallurgy on
all units, where previously only the high-
est-tuned engines were upgraded in this
way. This made the A-Plus engines gen-
erally longer-lived than the standard A-
Series, which had a life between major
rebuilds of around 80,000 to 100,000
miles in normal service. Studies were
made into upgrading the engine to use
five main crankshaft bearings but the
standard three-bearing crank had proven
reliable even in high states of tune and at
high engines speeds, so it was not
deemed worth the extra funding.
The new engines received distinctive 'A+'
branding on their rocker covers and the
blocks and heads were colour-coded for
the different capacities: yellow for 998 cc
and red for 1275 cc engines.
To allow the MG Metro to compete with
larger, more powerful hot hatchbacks a
turbocharged version of the 1275cc A-
Plus was developed with the assistance
of Lotus Engineering. A Garrett T3 turbo-
charger was fitted along with a unique
SU carburettor with an automatic pres-
sure-regulated fuel system. The engine
block, cylinder head, pistons, crankshaft
and valves were all modified from the
standard A-Plus engines. The turbo-
charger was fitted with an advanced two-
stage boost control system which only
allowed full boost to be achieved at en-
gine speeds above 4000rpm - this was to
prevent damage to the sump-mounted
four-speed gearbox, the design of which
dated back to the early 1950s and could
not reliably cope with the high torque
output of the Turbo engine at low
speeds.
The quoted power for the 1275cc A-Plus
Turbo was 94 horsepower although in
practice the tune could vary from car to
car and, because the engine was not in-
tercooled power varied significantly de-
pending on the weather. The MG Metro
Turbo was entered in the British Touring
Car Championship in 1983 and 1984,
with the tuned engines producing in ex-
cess of 200 horsepower.
