DECEMBER 2016
Today we gathered together with our school
and ‘Our Lady of the Rosary’ School for our
Advent Liturgy. This was the last official
assembly including both schools as our
‘school within a school’ partnership is now
coming to an end. On December 21st and 22nd
OLR School will be moving into their new
building in Cranston, and as such, we will be
re-organizing at Blessed Cardinal Newman
School. This re-organization will include re-
allocating some classes to different rooms
and implementing a new timetable for all
junior high classes and most elementary
classes. Please note that teaching assignments for courses and classes will not be changing,
and students will have the same teachers just at different times and in different rooms. All of
these changes will be phased in after the Christmas break in January. No action is required from
our families at this time as these internal changes will be communicated as necessary.
As we bid farewell to our Cranston families and wish them luck in their new school, we want to
communicate how much we will miss you all. It has been a pleasure to host you at our school and
the relationships formed will not soon be forgotten. Thank you for spending time with us, and
thank you to the BCN School community for being so accommodating. Calgary Catholic Schools
are all champions!
Since this is the last newsletter before the Christmas break we want to wish all families a safe
and blessed holiday season. Take care of each other and reach out to those in need. We will
continue our work building ‘champions’ as we re-connect in January. As we asked on our school
sign, we challenge everyone with the question: “Who are you a champion for?” What a beautiful
theme to take into the Christmas break….celebrate Advent in the coming weeks – and Merry
Christmas to all our families.

LATE ASSIGNMENT GUIDELINES 2016-2017 At Blessed Cardinal Newman School we encourage all our students to strive for success
at all times. Grade 7, 8 and 9 are important years in a students’ life as they develop work
habits that prepare them for high school and life. It is imperative that our students learn
and understand the importance of time management, organization skills and
responsibility. This will prepare them to be lifelong learners. Students are accountable
to complete all assignments to the best of their ability and hand them in on time.
Teachers will support students in order to achieve this.
The purpose of this document is to create consistent guidelines for assignment collection
and encourage students to be proactive in completion of assignments and encourage them to
take greater responsibility. Teachers will plan for sufficient time dedicated in class in order to
ensure students’ understanding of the content and assignment expectations.
Expectations
Assignments are to be handed in by the deadline given in class/posted on BrightSpace
(D2L) by the teacher.
Habitual late assignments will result in lowered work habits mark on the progress
reports. In these cases parents will be contacted by teacher via email or a phone call. If
the issues do not resolve, a meeting with the student, parents, teacher and
administration may be required.
If there are extenuating circumstances (i.e. tournaments, vacations) the student will
speak to the teacher before the assignment deadline to arrange an alternate date. If a
student is ill, it is their responsibility upon their return to make alternate arrangements
with the teacher.
An assignment not handed in will be assigned a zero on BrightSpace to prompt students
to contact the teacher to work out a plan to hand in.
Alternatively, grades may be based on work that was completed in class, even though
incomplete. This could result in a lower mark.
It is imperative that parents and students regularly check the grades section on BrightSpace to
see updated marks, and incomplete assignments. If parents have a concern they are
encouraged to directly contact the students subject teacher.
Teachers will update BrightSpace regularly in order for students and parents to stay informed.
Comments will be made when there are late assignments in the GradeBook section. Please note
that at times it is not possible for teachers to grade late assignments to be reflected on the
current reporting period. The assignment will be graded and the mark will be reflected in the
following reporting period.
We want to thank you in advance for working with us to support your child to achieve success.
If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact your child’s subject teacher directly
or school administration.
PLEASE NOTE:
As marks are cumulative, the Honour Roll will be recognized on the final progress report.

Calgary Catholic School District NOTICE TO PARENTS November 2016
2016-17 Annual Transportation Fee Payment DUE starting November 8, 2016
• Parent payment of the Calgary Catholic School District’s (CCSD) annual transportation fee for 2016-17 is DUE
and payable starting November 8, 2016.
The transportation fee payment timeline is in the fall of each year, in order to better accommodate the many student database information changes that occur from one year to the next due to students moving residences, schools or programs. Data in the transportation and accounting programs is expected to be more accurate using the new timeline. Please ensure payment is made before December 31, 2016.
• WHO PAYS THE FEE? The annual fee applies to any child in a regular or diverse learning program who receives district-provided transportation. This includes yellow bus service, taxicab service, Access Calgary, DREAMS service, and elementary students who are provided a monthly Transit pass in lieu of yellow bus service.
• CANCELLED TRANSPORTATION FOR YOUR CHILD? FEE ADJUSTMENTS: If you registered your child for transportation but your child is not using transportation services this year, please contact your school secretary to ensure that your registration is CANCELLED so that you will not be charged for this service. The charge will then be removed from your account. If your child is not using transportation, please do not pay the fee.
• PLEASE CONSIDER THIS YOUR OFFICIAL NOTICE TO PAY YOUR CHILD(REN)’S TRANSPORTATION FEE. See reverse for detailed instructions about how to pay online (preferred method), or by cash or cheque.
CCSD Transportation Fee: One child $270 per year Two children or more (family max) $540 per year
• PRO-RATED FEES: The district considers the transportation fee an annual fee. Fees will not be pro-rated based on individual child’s use of bus service. Pro-rated fees will only be approved for: new students registering at a school during the school year; for students moving out of the district during the year; or when students move during the year to a different district school where he/she no longer requires transportation.
• FEE WAIVERS: Those with financial challenges who are unable to pay this fee must meet with the school
principal to discuss this matter in order to be considered for a fee waiver. Please call your child’s school to arrange a meeting.

CALGARY CATHOLIC SCHOOL DISTRICT MONTHLY NEWS
ConnectionsDECEMBER 2016
Board of Trustees’ Christmas MessageHis Holiness Pope Francis has been a wonderful role model to all of us living and learning in Catholic faith together. As he reflected on the close of the Jubilee Year of Mercy, he shared many insights about what it truly means to give and receive mercy. He said, “If every one of us, every day, does a work of mercy, there will be a revolution in the world!” Visit our website under News to read more.
Chief Superintendent’s Christmas MessageIt’s hard to believe we have already entered the Advent season and are preparing for Christmas! The school year has been moving quickly, due to how busy our district and schools have been. But no matter how busy we get, there are always opportunities to slow down and reflect. As you may know, the Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy concluded on The Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe, on Sunday, November 20. As a district, we will continue on the road of exploring mercy with our faith theme for the school year, “Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful” (Luke 6:36). Visit our website under News to read more.
Celebrating Faith Day & Shepherd Leadership Award Winners 2016Calgary Catholic staff members came together as a community at the TELUS Convention Centre on No-vember 1 to celebrate our annual Faith Day—an inspirational, faith-based professional development day. We also recognized the 25 members of our district who received a Shepherd Leadership Award. Visit our website under News to learn more.
Field of Crosses ProjectThank you to our students who wrote 321 biographies on Southern Alberta soldiers who lost their lives in world conflicts. The biographies were affixed to the white crosses along Memorial Drive from November 1–11, as part of the Field of Crosses memorial project. In the coming years, we hope to have our students write biographies for all of the over 3000 soldiers represented.
School Nutrition Pilot ProgramWe are pleased to announce that St. Peter School and Holy Family School will take part in the Govern-ment of Alberta’s school nutrition pilot program. The program, which has been launched in 14 school boards across the province, provides funding so students can have healthy meals every school day, as well as learn about healthy eating and nutrition. Learn more on our website under News.
Annual Advent and Christmas High School Choral Festival – December 6, 2016The tradition continues at CCSD and all are invited! The Advent and Christmas High School Choral Festival features choirs from Bishop Carroll, Bishop Grandin, Bishop O’Byrne, Notre Dame, St. Francis and St. Mary’s. With close to 700 students participating—this is a holiday event not to miss! It will take place on Tuesday, December 6 at 7 p.m. at St. Mary’s Cathedral (219 - 18 Ave. SW). For more information, please contact [email protected].
Diploma Preparation Courses – January 2017The Calgary Catholic School District will again be offering opportunities for students and the general public interested in taking Diploma Preparation Courses in January 2017. The cost is $75 for 12 hours of instruction, with four-hour classes held over three evenings. Learn more and register online under Stu-dents/Academic Support/Diploma Preparation Courses.
Christmas HoursCalgary Catholic schools and administrative offices will be closed beginning on Friday, December 23 and will reopen on Monday, January 9. We wish everyone a wonderful Christmas season!
Did you know?
Our annual District Day with the Calgary Hitmen will be held on Friday, January 27, 2017 at 7 p.m. Mark your calendars and stay tuned to the district website and social media for information on how to buy your tickets!
