Chaplain’s MessageBy Rev. Graham Patterson, Chaplain

Advent: The Birth Stories of Jesus in Matthew’s GospelAdvent, always starting on the fourth Sunday before Christmas, provides a season of preparation for the Church’s annual celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ, Son of God, who enters the world as “Light of the World” at the darkest time (shortest day) of the calendar year. This year, 2016, Advent starts on the earliest possible day, November 27 (three days after Thanksgiving), because Christmas Day itself falls on a Sunday. For church bodies using the common lectionary (assigned readings for each Sunday) including the Eastern Orthodox, Roman Catholic, Episcopalian, Lutheran, Presbyterian, and Methodist among others, this is Year “C,” the year of the Gospel of Matthew. Following that tradition, we will be reflecting on the birth stories of Jesus from Matthew this month, including His Genealogy, Birth, the Visit of the Magi, Flight into Egypt, Slaughter of the Innocents and Return from “Safety” in Egypt. Because Matthew was written primarily for Christians of Jewish origin, our study will lift up Old Testament passages providing powerful continuity with the experiences of Israel, including both Joseph’s (son of Jacob in Genesis), and Moses’ experiences of finding refuge in Egypt (Exodus).
