I hope you will be able join us for this wonderful evening. We will be bringing you live music again. My husband, Darryl, really enjoys our guild members. The finger foods that you prepare are always delicious, whether they are sweets or savories. It is nice to have pretty dishes, but remember you need to take them home that evening. Cranberry punch and hot apple cider will be provided. Help in areas of set up, cleanup, and food tables would be great- ly appreciated to make the night run smoothly. We had quite a few people sign up for raffle baskets but we could use a few more. Please provide me with a theme and who is donating the basket. That evening, please have an itemized list of the contents and who is donating it attached to the basket. These are always arranged so nicely. The baskets need to be de- livered that evening by 6:15. I need to know the theme of the basket preferably before by Sunday, the 6th, so I can prepare the ticket bags. Thank you ladies who are ironing Sharon Coniglio's tablecloths. Holiday SpiritBy Nora Deans, [email protected], 831.760.9800

The holiday season is upon us, brimming with the spirit of giving and good cheer. One of the many things I love about our Guild is the heartfelt generosity of giving time and quilts to help others. This came home to me in a personal way the other day when a friend called who had recently been hospital-ized with kidney failure. After returning home, he reached out to tell me he was at the dialysis center for the first time and had received one of our Guild’s quilts. He loved the colors and patterns and seemed quite touched by the gesture. It continues to comfort him during his treatments and at home. Thank you, Terann, and all of you who create the hundreds of charity quilts we give out each year.

I also love the depth and quality of speakers who join us during our membership meetings each month. Our thanks to the Program Committee, which has lined up a lovely suite of talented quilters for us over the next year (you can find the list in our newsletter and on the website). They try to find something for everyone in our diverse guild – whether traditionalists, modernists, beginners or experts. We’re so lucky to live close to Asilomar so we can take advantage of the top teachers who travel to Empty Spools Sem-inars to share their knowledge. The Program Committee is already thinking about speakers and work-shops for 2017, and I can’t wait to see who they line up. If you have ideas, please share them with acting Program Chair, and Workshop Chair, Tiana Duarte.

Besides putting together first-class programs, the Board works hard to keep you up-to-date with the lat-est Guild news and happenings in the region. Kathrin Brown is wearing many hats these days and doing a wonderful job with the newsletter, which she says is much like putting together a quilt. She’s also taking us into the world of social media with Facebook and Instagram and will be sharing details with you soon. I follow quilt artists from all over the world on Instagram as part of my daily inspiration, and look forward to seeing our Guild’s work online.

We’re also going to be updating our website on a new hosting site, as the group we’ve been working with over the years was recently purchased by Like Sew. Claudia Sammis is working hard behind-the-scenes on the transition, along with Alex Burke and other volunteers, as well as serving as writer/ photographer, and it’s a huge effort. Thank you, Claudia and Alex!

You can almost hear the rustling of paper and ribbon as we gather goodies for our Winter Social Gift baskets fundraiser on December 7th. I always look forward to the lovely music, delicious food and excitement of the bidding on baskets. June Cornell makes it seem effortless and each year it gets better and better. Our proceeds support our Grants Program and with a December 1st deadline for grant applications, we’d like your help in letting schools and groups know about this chance to receive funds for textile-related activities. Please see http://www.mpqg.org/media/uploads/2015/08/21/files/Grant_Request_Form_brown.pdf for the application form. Judi Brown is leading this effort, and Noreen Nance recently helped spread the word in Cedar Street Times and the Monterey Herald. Last year we gave out seven grants – let’s see if we can top that this year.

Merry, merry wishes to all. Nora

Quilt SlamJanuary 4, 2016 Meetingby Tiana Duart, [email protected]

Do you have a quilt with a story that you want to share with your fellow guild members?

At the January 4th meeting you will have the opportunity to take the stage to tell your story about a special quilt/UFO. Instead of an outside speaker, five guild members will be selected at ran-dom to tell their quilt story for a 10-minute talk each.

Beads of Courage for Kids with Cancerby Claudia Sammis, [email protected], 408-219-5758

Do you have some larger beads languishing on a shelf in your studio? It seems that we all have supplies that we intended to use to embellish a quilt but just never got around to it. How about an old, lovely necklace that has seen better days? Here's an idea to put nice beads to a good use and light-en your stash at the same time.

Recently, I came across Beads of Courage an organi-zation based in Arizona that serves children with life threatening illnesses in 250 hospitals nationally. If you'd like to know more about their work, go to www.beadsofcourage.org. Click on the Sunday Morning box at the bottom of the page to learn more, and be sure to cruise around their web site.

As you will see, the organization distributes beads that appear to be about 1/3-inch or larger, any color, focal beads, solid or patterned, and preferably with larger holes.

If you have beads to donate, please bring them to a general meeting and I will see that they get to Beads of Courage.

Cammie has been organizing since early childhood; she started with the kitchen cabinets and never stopped! She always had a knack for organizing and worked in the retail industry for many years where she learned the importance of excellent customer service.

Cammie's organizing philosophy is, there is no “one size fits all” when it comes to organizing, be-cause each client’s situation and needs are different. She helps guide her clients throughout the process with caring, communication, and a slice of humor to help ease them through the project no matter how big or small. Bottom line, “it is all about you.” http://cjorganizing.com

Block of the Month: November 2015 Instructions *Pine Tree or 16-Patch*

This month we have an easy 16-patch Block or a Tree Block with some mea-suring and marking - hopefully you can fit making one of these (or both) into your busy pre-holiday season.

16-patch Block - 8 ½” unfinished You will need sixteen 2½” fabric squares in holiday/Christmas colors. Sew squares together in pairs, then each pair to another pair to make a row. Then sew the rows together to make the 16-patch. Tree - 8 1/2” unfinished MATERIALS NEEDED:

Tree: Use any green, teal or mix of 1, 2 or 3 fabrics. Cut (3) rectangles as such: 4 ½” x 2 ½”, 6” x 2 ½”, and 8” x 2 ½”. Trunk: Brown, gray, black: (1) 1 ¾” x 2 ½” piece. Background (BG): Use any contrasting color. Cut: (2) 4 ½” x 2 ½”, (2) 3 ¾ ” x 2 ½”, (2) 2 ¾ ” x 2½”, (2) 4” x 2 ½” ASSEMBLY:

Trunk: Take the two 4” x 2 ½” BG pieces and sew one on each side of the trunk piece along the 2 ½” sides - trim to 8 ½” long. Tree: Place the smallest tree piece (4 ½” x 2 ½”) right side up. Place long-est BG piece (4 ½” x 2 ½”) on top, right side down, with the 2 ½” side lined up with top edge and you can see the bottom edges intersect. Draw a 45 degree line from top corner to bottom intersection as shown. Pin in place with the raw edges lined up. Sew a hairpin above marked line. Press seams toward tree fabric and trim. Then repeat drawing diagonal line on other 4½” x 2½” BG piece: To make things efficient, you can draw all of the diagonal lines and pin the pieces together and then chain piece. background pieces 3 ¾” x 2 ½” go onto 6” tree piece, background pieces 2 ¾” x 2 ½” go onto 8” tree piece. Mark lines, sew just above line, press, and trim. You will end with 3 branch units. Assemble by arranging the branch and trunk units in order and sew together in rows. You will end up with a 8 ½” square. Admire! Make one or several of these blocks (each should be different, please) and bring to the December 7 meeting to collect points to win all BOM made by guild members. Five (5) points/blocks will get you to enter your name into the drawing pot. See specific BOM guidelines on how to collect points at http://www.mpqg.org/activities/block_of_the_month/. Special Thank you to Julie Cefalu aka The Crafty Quilter for allowing us to use her tutorial on the tree assembly for this block.
