FOKUS FUSECO Forum 2015: “Digital Convergence and SeamlessConnectivity for everyone andeverything – Bringing 5G, SDN/NFVand M2M/IOT together”

The FOKUS FUSECO FORUM (FFF)2015 was the sixth event in the series

and attracted approximately 200telecommunication industry expertsand academics from 32 countries. FFF2015 provided a unique discussionplatform for representatives frominternational network operators,standard development bodies, andleading academic organizations. Thisyear’s event theme was “DigitalConvergence and SeamlessConnectivity for everyone andeverything – Bringing 5G, SDN/NFVand M2M/IoT together” focusing on theevolution of service control platformsfor fixed and mobile next generationnetworks and their impact on industry.FFF 2015 offered two full days oftechnical tutorials, interactiveworkshops, conferences, exhibitionbooths, and live demonstrations.

Open Baton: new features available

A new git tag (0.15) of Open Baton willbe available in the next hours. In thistag have been realized some structuralchanges, added new features, andsignificantly improved the platformfixing issues that were present in thelast release. We have also extendedthe available projects including azabbix-plugin that can be used forintegration with an external monitoringsystem (zabbix) and integration-teststhat can be used for performing tests ofyour integrated solutions. We havebeen testing this latest release with ourown toolkit Open5GCore and weachieved exciting results with regardsto deployment and provisioning time: Ittook around 70 seconds to deploy andprovision a fully functional core

Successful Final Review of EUProject FI-STAR:“Digital Convergence and SeamlessConnectivity for everyone andeverything – Bringing 5G, SDN/NFVand M2M/IOT together”

The final review meeting of the FutureInternet Social and TechnologicalAlignment Research project (FI-STAR),which is an EU project within theframework of FI-PPP, was successfullycompleted. The ultimate objectives ofthe project are to validate FI-WAREtechnologies in live environments andtesting in real world healthcare,wellness and ambient assisted livingsituations and to build related cloud-based infrastructures. It will becomeself-sufficient after the end of theproject and will continue as asustainable business model withseveral partners. Based on the resultsof FI-STAR, Fraunhofer FOKUS isgoing to maintain a FI-WARE-basedinfrastructure along with upcomingprojects.

Kick-off of EMBERS Project:The “Enabling a Mobility Back-End as aRobust Service (EMBERS)” is a newH2020 project that will be kicked off on18 December in Paris and will last forthree years. EMBERS aims atproviding an integrated openinfrastructure based on a smart parkingand a smart management solution. Theinfrastructure is going to be offered viaa variety of generic interfaces, includingoneM2M, ETSI M2M, OMA LWM2Mand FI-WARE NGSI. FraunhoferFOKUS is going to contribute to theproject based on the OpenMTC andFUSECO playground: www.open-mtc.org.

TRESCIMO, EU-South Africa, makingFIRE possible, final review andpresentationTRESCIMO stands for Testbeds forReliable Smart City Machine-to-Machine Communication for SmartCities, with a lifespan from January-2014 to December2015. The combined technology fromI2CAT (Spain), CSIR (SouthAfrica), Fraunhofer FOKUS (Germany),Technical University of Berlin(Germany), University of CapeTown(South Africa), Eskom (South Africa),ABS (Israel) made possible to buildand run a smartenvironmental monitoring trial in SantVicenç dels Horts, near Barcelona,Spain and a smart energy trial inGuateng, near Pretoria, South Africa.

BERCOM Kick-offThe first consortium meeting of theBERCOM project was hosted byFraunhofer FOKUS on 15 October.BERCOM (Blueprint for Pan-EuropeanResilient Critical Infrastructures basedon LTE Communications) is a Franco-German 3-year collaborative projectthat aims at raising resilience by meansof emerging 5G mobile technologies.

BERCOM develops, under the headlineSCADAoverLTE, an evolutionaryadvancement of current automationtechnologies and hardens standardizedmobile technologies to the strictrequirements of critical infrastructures.Fraunhofer FOKUS used theopportunity to present to their projectpartners the toolkits Open5GMTC andOpen5GCore which provide a platformfor realizing the BERCOMdemonstration scenarios.

DAAD - UNIFI Project MeetingThe DAAD-UNIFI meeting took place inBerlin at the Fraunhofer FOKUSInstitute from November 3rd to

November 6th, 2015. 28 participants

from 11 countries participated.

Purpose of the University FutureInternet, UNIFI, project is to establishsustainable teaching and researchinfrastructures in the areas of FutureInternet through global collaborationamong academic institutions facilitatingresearchers particularly master andPhD students to work together on stateof the art technologies. Theseinfrastructures are based on state ofthe art open source toolkits andadditional Software packages whichare publicly available. The initiative ishappy to announce the expansion ofnew associations and partnershipsstretching all over the world includingJapan, Mexico, Colombia, Finland,Hungary, among other countries.
