NATIONAL ROSE. At the National Conference in Canberra in September, it was decided to have a white rose for National Servicemen, and the South Australian executive, was given the honour of choosing a rose with the help and guidance of Kim Syrus of Corporate Roses, Myponga. (pictured right). A white rose was chosen, it has deep green foliage, well shaped buds, that start as a pale yellow, and as the bloom opens it has a lovely pale yellow centre, with a lovely perfume, that can be described as a passion-fruit aroma. Kim searched for a name, and “National Pride”, was chosen, as there is no other rose in the world with that name. The tag would tell the story of National Servicemen, and should be ready for sale in 2017, with all royalties going to the organisation.

PRESIDENT’S REPORT.

I would like to thank the Executive and a number of our members for their efforts while I was out of action. The Teamwork displayed be everybody involved was a credit to the Organisation. Since returning to active duty in June this year, I have attended a number of functions. The National Servicemen’s lunch at the Tanunda RSL. This is an

annual event attended by about 80 ex nashos from the Barossa. Don Rowe and others are at-tempting to establish a Sub Branch in the area.

The Riverland Bash while in the area with the Touring Club at Kingston-on-Murray. The Fleurieu AGM at Victor Harbor. Remembrance Day in the City. RSL. Opening of the annual Branch Conference at the Torrens Parade Ground. A briefing regarding the proposed “Walkway of Remembrance” to be established in Kintore Av-

enue, Adelaide. In company with other members hosted a number of Victorian visitors from the Monash Sub

Branch at our Headquarters to show them how we do it very well. The visitors were taken to the Military Museum at Edinburgh where they were provided with a BBQ lunch and a tour of the museum.

Unfortunately I must report that we have lost a number of members who have passed on. To all family and friends of those who have gone, please accept my sincere condolences. Our Garden of Remembrance is progressing, with the sale of Pavers going well. I am sure that Barry Presgrave will give a favourable report regarding the pavers and future plans. A National Serviceman’s rose will be an integral part of the garden, and is in the process of being selected with the co-operation of Corporate Roses of Myponga, with approval from National Council. This has been a very productive year with many goals being achieved and I am sure 2016 will be another year when this organisation will continue along the road to success. On behalf of Chris and myself, I wish you all a very Merry Christmas, and a safe and Happy New Year. John Thorne .ESM President.

MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR.

A policeman radioed in to the station and reported that a woman had murdered her husband for walking on her wet kitchen floor. The sergeant asked if he had arrested her for the murder, “not yet” he said “the floor’s still wet.

RIVERLAND SUB BRANCH NEWS

Greetings– Sept 19th and 20th was a great weekend for our sub-branch as we hosted our Riverland Bash. The dinner was held in the Cobdogla Club, the popular band Freedom supplied the music, songs we could all relate to, had the toes tapping even if most of us no longer can do the dances. Peter Johnson and Peter Tucker welcomed all the guests, including State President John Thorne and wife Chris, State Secretary Marlene Blackmore and husband Don, also Geoff Hewitt, president of the Nasho Touring Club who were enjoying a week in the Kingston-On-Murray caravan park. It was great to also have some of our Nasho friends from Mildura with us again. John Thorne spoke to members about the named pavers to be laid in the Memorial Garden at head- Quarters and also about the National Serviceman’s rose to be propagated , and when sold, the Nasho Assoc. will receive a royalty. A delicious meal was served, much too large for many of us, then time to catch up with friends. Next day in our lovely Riverland weather we all gathered on the lawns by Lake Bonney for our BBQ lunch. The cooks did a great job, no one went hungry and then came the highlight of the day, our monster raffle draws. The table was laden with goodies all colourfully wrapped. Thanks to Ron Hill and Jim Crowhurst’s expertise at drawing the winning tickets, a steady stream of happy folk descended to gather their prizes. Our Mildura friends took many parcels across the border and many SA Nashos scored lots of prizes as well. Thanks to all who provided the prizes and to everyone who bought the tickets. It was a great weekend and we trust everyone enjoyed themselves. On October 11th, 30 members were welcomed by President Peter for our meeting in Renmark. He thanked members for our successful Bash weekend, especially Peter Tucker, Jim, Ron and the BBQ cook. A letter was received from visiting Nashos, thanking us for the great weekend. It’s good to get positive feedback, makes our efforts worthwhile. The Barmera RSL have invited members to attend their 100th anniversary dinner in November. Members will travel to Lake Cullullaraine on Nov 18th for a picnic outing and hopefully some of our Mildura friends will join us that day. Discussions were held re: visit to the Murray Cod farm in Renmark, and also costs to hire a bus for possible trips next year. Following our enjoyable lunch, some members visited a private home in Renmark to look at the wonderful collection of memorabilia. I wasn’t able to attend, but was told it was a wonderful display– old farm machinery, even a rickshaw in the garden area. Indoors things from all over the world, dolls, original matchbox cars, medals, all old antiques, just to name a few. Only one more meeting for 2015, our AGM and Christmas lunch to be held in Waikerie. Wishing all members a safe and happy Christmas season. Roma Hausler Scribe.

Fleurieu Sub-Branch Report /May– November 2015 Membership has remained static at 77 compared to 78 last year, and thanks go to Bill Renshaw who has made sure our membership has been maintained. The May Committee meeting and Members BBQ was held at the Beachside Caravan Park at Normanville when 39 members and partners attended. A large log fire in very amenable surroundings provided an excellent venue for this function. Committee Member Charlie White provided his very tasty pumkin soup and Social Director Lorna Jones and her helpers added hot vegies to go with the BBQ followed by apricots and ice cream A very sumptuous meal in a very friendly environment. A comprehensive raffle table generated considerable funds to add to the Sub-Branch’s finances. In June the Sub-Branch joined with the 423 Victor Harbor Army Cadet Unit to host CSAG, Community Services Appreciation Get-together. 70 people representing 15 other service organisations attended this combined BBQ held at the Cadet HQs. Victor Harbor. The Cadets paraded, a Command handover took place and the local SES gave a very instructive and informative display of the services they provide to our community. Finances are sound and since the beginning of this year we have made contributions of $800.00 to the local Cadet Unit. In September, members gathered following a Committee meeting at Kent Reserve, Victor Harbor for an enjoyable BBQ and fellowship with 34 members attending. Thanks go to Lorna Jones for her work catering for member’s functions, apart from the Christmas Luncheon, and for her money raising raffles with excellent results. Thanks also go to Jenny Ball who publishes the Brief, to Sandra Hewitt who prepares the envelopes for mailing, and to our Patron Michael Pengilly who covers the cost of mailing the Brief to our members. Wishing everyone a very Happy Christmas and a positive and safe New Year. Neil Wilkinson. President.

Presidents report– October 2015. September’s meeting was well attended at the Military Transport Museum, considering other functions. The barbeque lunch provided by the museum was excellent as usual. On the 20th of September we held our Charter dinner at the Salisbury R S L with a very good roll up, including Margaret Taylor, Doris Mitchell and Pam Reid. The day went off well with heaps of raffle prizes. The Northern Central members enjoyed themselves winning a lot of the prizes. We had special laminated place mats for the occasion designed by Rob Wellington. This year saw the membership grow by four new members and two transfers from Kadina. Unfortunately we have lost our treasurer Tony Cutler, as he is returning to the UK to be with Helena, so we will be looking for a new treasurer and secretary. At the November meeting we had a ceremony at the Memorial to remember our fallen members with white crosses and duly named. During the year I laid wreaths in Orange Ave. on Remembrance Day, at the dawn service on Anzac Day, and at the commemoration of the bombing of Darwin on 19th February. Our next social outing will be the Christmas lunch on 6th December, and that will close our year, and we look forward to 2016. Trevor Carter.. President.

CHAPLAIN’S CORNER. Now here’s thought Who will play the baby Jesus? Children, especially little children, have taken their places in the Nativity plays at Christmas time. Tea towels, cardboard crowns and dressing gowns have provided the costumes. But how is Jesus portrayed? One community announcement described their approach, “All the cast will be played by members from the kindergarten, except the baby Jesus, who will be played by a concealed 40watt light bulb.” Perhaps it’s no so daft because people did come to call him Light of the world. There was another nativity play where it was planned that at a strategic point all the lights in the hall would be switched off , except the illumination in the manger. But the youngster controlling the switches became confused and all the lights went out. After moments of confusion, a shepherd’s voice could be heard, “Hey, you've switched off Jesus!” Let’s not be dazzled by the bright lights and flickering effects of decorations and seasonal customs so that we give no thought to this particular and special birth. As the prophets of old may have said, “Switch Jesus on, and let our living be influenced by his wisdom Teaching and example”.

UPPER SOUTH EAST SUB BRANCH

I would like to begin by welcoming back all of our members after the winter break. Our first meeting back was held on September 6th at the Crown Hotel in Kingston. It was a good turn out with twenty eight members attending for a lunch gathering with everyone enjoying a lovely meal. A raffle was then held after lunch was concluded. At this meeting it was mentioned that one of Upper South East mem-bers Peter Staude from Bordertown had sadly passed away. Two of our members John Hill and Susan Hinton attended the “Riverland Nasho Bash”. Our last meeting was held on October 25th at the Woolshed Inn in Bordertown. All 22 members that attended enjoyed their meals, which was followed by a raffle. Committee member Margaret Taylor once again provided the entertainment with some jokes. At this meeting it was mentioned that the Apsley RSL had invited our branch members to join them for a luncheon on Sunday 8th November at the Border Inn Hotel. On November 11th members gathered to commemorate “Remembrance Day” at MacIntosh Square neighbouring the war memorial monument in the centre of Naracoorte. Six light horsemen and three nurses all of which were local people dressed up in World War 1 uniforms. All Naracoorte schools had students participate in the service. After official formalities concluded twenty of our members had lunch at “Billy Mac’s Hotel” and enjoyed a lovely afternoon mingling amongst one another. The annual Christmas lunch will this year be held on November 29th at the Crown Inn Hotel in Kingston to bring another year to a close. As this is the last newsletter before our Christmas break, I would like to thank everyone that attended our meetings throughout the year, and for making them an enjoyable days outing. Just a friendly reminder that our first meeting in 2016 will be held on February 14th at the Lucindale Hotel in Lucindale. This will be held in conjunction with the “National Servicemen’s Day” and our AGM. Until we meet again in 2016, I would like to wish all members a safe and enjoyable festive season. Merry Christmas and a Happy new year to all!!” Susan Hinton Photos on inside front cover. (Committee member)

YORKE PENINSULA SUB BRANCH.

On Sunday 9th August, 10 members travelled to Curramulka for lunch at the Hotel. We all enjoyed a lovely lunch with lots of talk and laughter. We were the only ones in the dining room that day, so we could let our hair down and stayed late. Our next meeting on September 20th at the Royal Exchange Hotel, Kadina was not so successful with only five people turning up. Even so we had an enjoyable afternoon, staying in the dining room till we were asked to leave so they could clear the table. We had arranged to go to Kadina RSL for a games afternoon but due to the small number it was decided to forego this part of the day. The October meeting was a BBQ at the Memorial in Wallaroo. The weather was perfect and eleven people had a pleasant afternoon just sitting and talking. Our attendances this year have been up and down but we have a small group of people who turn up, when they are able each time. Our final meeting for the year will be a Christmas lunch at the Weeroona Hotel, Wallaroo, which will be followed by the AGM. Nancy Rawlings . HAPPY NEW YEAR..

LOWER SOUTH EAST SUB BRANCH REPORT.

Greeting from the sunny (and dry) Lower South East Sub Branch. Like most parts of our state this year we have had an unusually dry spring. Our National Servicemen’s Memorial Park is looking impressive , with the border of carpet roses the best we've ever seen them and we have received approving comments from the families who visit to place a flower in the tube next to their departed member’s Memorial Plaque. Our monthly dinner meetings have been well attended and recently our own member, Secretary Phil McInness and his wife Maxine gave us a very interesting address on their visit to Toogoolawah RSL Club in Queensland, and also Phil’s model Catalina Flying Boat which he brought along (see photo) and explained the plane’s use and achievements during the Second World War. At our October meeting, we enjoyed an after dinner address by Leon Rademeyer, a South African, who described his life and compulsory National Service in that country and the dangers in living in South Africa. After several years in Australia he still feels uneasy when he remembers those days. The 11th November Remembrance Day was observed at our local Cenotaph in near perfect conditions. In our usual custom, a wreath was laid by our President Lyndon, among a near record number of wreaths and floral tributes. (Photo below) Our group will hold our Christmas meeting this month, 30th November, with pre-dinner drinks, nibbles and Christmas cake and coffee to end the evening. All Nashos are welcome to join us for this last meet-ing of 2015. May I take the opportunity to wish all Nashos and their families a Merry Christmas and a Happy and healthy New Year. Ted Jordan Publicity Officer.

EYRE PENINSULA SUB BRANCH REPORT.

The sub branch is meeting every month with an average attendance of 12 members. 90% of members who live in Pt. Lincoln are members of the RSL, and one member is on their board. The RSL do not charge us for the use of their premises and meeting room. This year our fund raiser was a trip on the tuna boat “Tacoma”, and we raised $1000,00. This gave us more funds to be able to finish off the last upgrade of the RSL cemetery. We also donate $200 annually to the Riding for the Disabled , to help purchase feed for their horses. We attended National Servicemen’s day, Anzac services, and Remembrance Day. After 10 years we have finally achieved the upgrade of the RSL cemetery. We wish you all a Merry Christmas and prosperous new year. Cheers, Frog Hartley ESM, Secretary. Our next meeting is 12th February, 2016.

INTRODUCING. Bernie Dickenson.

Ber- nie was born in Goodwood in 1938, in the mid-wife’s house, who was his Grandmother’s sister. He went to school in Keswick, and was educated by the St. Joseph’s nuns. When he left school he served his apprenticeship with the Railways, and took up marine studies in his fourth year, and it was during his third year he had to register for National Service on his 18th birthday. Bernie did National Service at Woodside, in the first intake in 1957 from January and April, and went to sea after his apprenticeship. The happiest time of National Service was when he joined the band in Woodside. He met his wife Margaret at the end of his apprenticeship, and they went on to have four children. He became a Chief Engineer, and did thirty years service, including on a crude oil tanker of 125,000 tons. He also did 17 months with the Shell Company as a steam engineer and in 1988 retired from the Merchant Navy and came ashore. His music career started with the Army Cadet Corp band, and he belonged to the Air Training Corp band, as well as the Railways Institute band, where he marched in the John Martin’s Pageant. The photograph above shows of Bernie’s time at Woodside, with one side of the band being Regular Army, and the other the Nasho band. Bernie was the Drum Major. Bernie worked as a Boiler Inspector for the Dept of Labour, and is a real steam buff. He has not retired yet as he still works on steam engines, and has worked with Murray River paddle steamers, the Pichi Richi trains, and the Wallaroo rail cars. Bernie and Margaret have been married for 54 years, and now live in Glandore, only 2 miles from where he was born.

MEMORIAL GARDEN. The South Australian branch of our Association is creating a Memorial Garden, with a pathway of engraved pavers, a memorial stone and eventually garden beds with roses planted by the families of departed members. Seating, barbecue facilities and lawns will also be included in the gardens at Surrey Rd, Keswick, so that all Association members, along with the families of those who served, will have a place of reflection which they and the general public will be able to enjoy, More information about the memorial garden, including paver forms for download can be found on the Association’s website http;//www.nashosa.org.au Prices start at $40 for an individual paver $75 for a double paver $100 for a triple paver $130 for a four paver offer. The offer closes on 31st December 2015. The photo shows some of the workers at the working Bee, planting crepe myrtles donated by Coromandel Valley Nursery, and creating a garden bed for future planting.

NORTHERN CENTRAL SUB BRANCH.

Greetings from Northern Central. November has been a busy month with several activities to report on. The Kokoda Commemoration Service on 2nd November was held at Doxiadis reserve, St. Agnes with Keith, Padre Norm and myself attending. Numbers were down on previous years. Bill Denny AM, BM spoke on the numbers of WW2 Diggers who are still alive here in SA, about 2000 only. A morning tea/lunch was held after in the Tea Tree Gully RSL. The 9th November was rather a warm afternoon but 7 members with the help of some bluetac, affixed Poppies to the Remembrance Wall , with quite a few comments from the public who were passing through where we were working. It was decided not to sell poppies on Remembrance Day, due to lack of help from members, but Keith Fitzgerald took it upon himself to go into the classrooms of the U3A (University of the third age) Modbury to sell poppies and sold $100 worth, and with the money collected during the lead up to Remembrance Day, over $3000 will be passed on to the RSL. Remembrance Day was once again well represented by the sub branch. It was pleasing to see so many there and the local primary school was represented by some 200 + children seated on the floor. Inviting schools along to a solemn service like Remembrance Day is vital to their knowledge and upbringing, and it has been a tradition with the Enfield RSL to have children along to these types of services. Malcolm Kruss.

He had an older brother Raymond, and went to school in Manoora. In 1939 war was declared and the family moved to Adelaide, and lived with Don’s aunty in Hyde Park and then in Westbourne Park, so Don changed schools several times. In 1951 Don was called up for National Service and posted to N.S.T. Battalion A Company 4 Platoon, and it wasn’t long until he was transported up to the Woodside Army barracks. During this time Don worked at Charles Moore’s, in Victoria Square where he had 2 weeks off every 12 months for military service. They have been married for 58 years and have 2 children ,Wendy who lives in Sydney, and David who is a Major in the Australian Army, based in Canberra. Don was a foundation member of the National Servicemen’s Association, and a member of the Flinders Sub branch, where he was on the Committee and became President. Shirley and Don retired to the Vines Retirement Village in 2013, and Don is still very active in Nashos, trying to create an interest in the Barossa Valley with the hope of establishing a new Sub branch there.
